About this listing
An oasis of rural calm within easy walking distance of Cortona, just 300 metres from the city walls, this lovingly restored farmhouse is nestled among terraced olive groves with sweeping views across the valley and an intimate secluded stone pool. Amazing peaceful location just ten minutes walk away from Cortona's bustling centre.
With room for nine adults and two additional children, the house is beautifully restored, full of original detail and rustic charm. This is no soulless rental property but a cherished home where the owner's family spends many weeks every year.
The main house is on two floors. On the ground floor is a kitchen/dining room with an open fireplace, a sitting room and a shower/toilet. Upstairs there is a master suite with a king-size bed and en-suite bathroom, a smaller room with a queen bed, en-suite bathroom and its own terrace, and a room with double/twin beds whose occupants use the shower/toilet downstairs.
Opposite the main house is a guest cottage with a double bed, en-suite bathroom and small kitchen, while by the pool there is another cottage with a double bed, en suite shower room and a living room where two children can sleep on separate sofa beds, taking total occupancy to 11.
There are tables to eat outside on either side of the house, following -- or avoiding -- the sun at different times of day, and plenty of shady places to sit in the extensive terraced gardens.
The house's position makes it unique -- you're in a farmhouse surrounded by olive groves but a 10-minute walk takes you to the vibrant centre of Cortona with its bars, restaurants and cultural attractions. No need to worry about parking or driving back from the restaurant at night. A 5-minute walk in the other direction gets you to a great country cafe/bar/grocery store, and from there you can lose yourself on miles of tracks in the wooded hills overlooking Cortona.
If you have a car -- or even four -- there's plenty of parking space at the house, but unless you're planning on exploring further afield you'll never need it -- everything that makes Cortona such a special place to visit is a short walk away.
And if you don't plan on driving at all you'll find Cortona is very well-connected by train -- a 10-minute taxi ride gets you to the station in Camucia, and there you'll find regular trains to Rome, Florence and places in between such as Orvieto and Arezzo, as well as to Perugia, with stops on the shores of nearby Lake Trasimeno.
Rome's main airport is three hours away by train, while combining train and taxi will get you to Florence airport in less than two hours, or to Pisa or Bologna in three hours -- not much longer than it takes by car.
Renting a car will expand your horizons -- you'll be able to visit nearby towns like Siena, Montepulciano, Montalcino and Pienza, or the beautiful UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia, or head through the hills above Cortona to Citta di Castello and Sansepolcro.
