About this listing

Come and stay in our country home, sleeping in a spacious, historic bedroom with triple aspect windows & private bathroom. Roam our beautiful, bohemian gardens & woodland set in 30 acres. Other rooms are sometimes available - see separate listings

Security Deposit: £150

The space

Lynsted Park, our home, was built in 1599 for the daughter of Sir Thomas More, Henry VIII's councillor, and it was the grand seat of the Earls of Teynham for centuries. In the 1800's it was given a Georgian make-over and was made into the more family-friendly home it is now. We have lived here for 8 years. The house is set in attractive gardens within 30 acres of parkland with woods, cricket pitch, a courtyard and a walled garden containing a tennis court and kitchen garden.
Your bedroom sits in the Georgian wing and has large windows on three sides with views over the grounds and surrounding countryside. The large room has a very comfortable super king-sized bed with luxury linen and can easily accommodate your own travel cot (no charge) or we can add an additional single bed for a child for £20 per night per child.

If you are travelling with children or close friends there is a small double bedroom with queen sized bed available next to this large room. We ONLY rent it to those who rent your large room so that the bathroom remains private to your booking. To rent this adjacent room costs £55 and it's really only suitable for another couple or two children - please note this is NOT listed separately, so just ask when you make your enquiry.

At certain times of the year there are separate listings for other rooms in the house: the 'Cosy Room' and the 'Master Room'. Please look on airbnb for details - they are all listed with the same photograph of the house and the description Historic Country Estate.

Guest access

Your room (and the second room next door) is on the first floor and accessible by your own private back staircase. The warm bathroom has a large bath and a power shower within the bath for your exclusive use; it is very close to your room. You are in a wing of the house that offers privacy and we feel this is important for both you and us. Downstairs, there is a large, fully equipped kitchen which you may use to make hot drinks and simple meals. As we are a family of five we will be using the kitchen regularly but we can easily work around each other. The garden and grounds are free for you to roam and you are welcome to picnic (in summer, garden rugs, tables and chairs are available) and play on the tennis court and ping pong table. From June-Sept there may be fresh fruit and vegetables that guests can use from the kitchen garden. We have a range of books, puzzles and children's toys so please ask if you would like to use these.

Interaction with guests

We would be very happy to give you guidance about what to do in the local area and can recommend restaurants. We have a list of things to do, places to see/where to eat to help you plan your trip. But we both work so we are not available all the time.

The neighbourhood

We are very close to Lynsted, an attractive rural village with a pub and church but you can use the area to enjoy all the English countryside has to offer, as a setting off point for the Kent coast or even a trip to or from France. 5 minutes away in neighbouring Teynham on the A2 there is a Co-Op supermarket, post office and local train station. The historic market town of Faversham, just 15 minutes drive has a selection of antique furniture shops, restaurants, bars, cobbled streets and a thriving market on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Slightly further is Whitstable, an attractive coastal town which has some excellent restaurants such as Wheelers Oyster Bar. The historic cathedral city of Canterbury is about 25 mins drive away and well worth a visit. Margate with its splendid Turner Contemporary museum and shell grotto is a quirky destination not to be missed.
There are many lovely walks and bike rides close by. We have bikes you are welcome to borrow but let us know in advance so we can pump up tyres and check they are in good working order. Cycling to our local station Teynham should take about 15 minutes and from here you can get trains to both London and in the other directions towards the Kent coast. However, there are faster train routes available from Sittingbourne and Faversham both about 15 mins away by car. (details below)
A number of local pubs offer excellent food and drink. We recommend The Three Mariners pub at Oare, The Plough at Lewson Street and the highly acclaimed Sportsman at Seasalter. (These need booking in advance).
The gardens at Doddington Place are 25 minute walk from us and open late March to September - you can then go on to Doughty's, the county's renowned butcher and pick up a homemade sausage roll or pasty.
Leeds Castle “The most beautiful castle in the world” (Lord Conway), has interesting gardens and other visitor attractions including open air concerts in the summer. For kids, Leeds Castle also have a Go-Ape tree top adventure and there are good zoos/safaris in the local area, Port Lympne. Howletts and Wildwoods.

Getting around

Our home is perfectly located for a weekend country escape due to its close proximity to London and the set up is well suited to couples and those with children. Sittingbourne station can be reached in approx an hour from London St Pancras, Victoria or at rush hour from Cannon Street, followed by a 15 minute cab ride from the station. Alternatively, you could come to our local station Teynham (1hr 10 mins from London Victoria) and cycle the 2 mile journey to our home. If driving, Lynsted Park is situated 5 minutes off the A2 which gives easy access to the surrounding area. The Dover Ferry terminal (to France) is approx 45 minutes away and it's a similar distance to the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone. Ashford International train station is around 35 minutes drive. Our nearest airport is London City which is well connected to our train lines. It is a 1hr and 15 min drive to Gatwick Airport and similar to Southend.

When you read reviews for a place that say things like "the best place to stay in Kent" you have pretty high expectations for staying somewhere, but Vanessa, Neil and their children were so welcoming and the house and grounds so beautiful that's it's hard to complement them and the stay with anything less than saying it really was the best Air BnB experience we've had. Even though the pictures of the place are lovely it really has to be seen to be believed. We stayed on Easter weekend and had he extra bonus on seeing lambs, chicks and conducting an Easter Egg hunt around the ample grounds for our 3 year old. They really made us feel like part of the family, breakfast was delicious and the company lovely. Can't recommend enough!

This was, without doubt, the best Airbnb experience that we've ever had. The house was stunning and Vanessa and Neil were incredibly kind and welcoming. The rooms were beautiful and clean and the whole stay exceeded our expectations. We are already looking forward to our next trip here!

This is a great place for a weekend away, set in a beatiful yet accessable piece of the Kent countryside. Plenty to do and see in the area but the house and grounds are enough alone. Vanessa and Neil's family are very welcoming and went the extra mile to make us feel at home. There is a very relaxed atmosphere, would defo come back again.

Just amazing!! Clear and helpful contact from the beginning. We had such a lovely stay with Vanessa and her family – they made us feel very welcome (even gave us a lift to the wedding we were attending!) Stunning location – lovely to wander round the many gardens and woods. Their home is v tastefully decorated with everything you’d need (plus the bed is huge and comfy). Vanessa and Neil cooked up a great breakfast too (and catered for my veggie diet – thanks both!) One evening we dined at The Plough Inn, Lewson Street – nice pub, good food and wine (about 25min walk away). Totally recommend staying with Vanessa and Neil – we had a very relaxing weekend with lovely hosts. Thanks again, we hope to visit again soon :)

Driving up to the house, I thought I was dreaming. What beautiful surroundings and WHAT a mansion! Vanessa and Neil were so friendly and charming that far from feeling timid of all that grandeur they made us feel like we were visiting old friends. I can't begin to describe how wonderful our stay was, the room is fantastic, the house impressive but most of all the warmth and charm of the owners made us feel completely relaxed. I can only be grateful that we were allowed the opportunity to be here. Their sweet daughter, Claudia, made my daughter feel as if she had found a friend as well. It is a perfect place for children too! So, thank you so much Vanessa, Neil and Claudia.

Grew up abroad and always want to travel. Am lucky to be a Geography teacher and never had a 'dull day at the office'. Keen gardener & cook. Swimming, yoga and good radio keep me thinking and happy. Most important of all are my family and friends.
