Neighbourhood highlights

Fountain Cottage is located in the village of Chapel Stile at the heart of the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by spectacular countryside of the cottage enjoys a picturesque setting in the village of Chapel Stile in the un-spoilt Langdale Valley within the National Park. Located at the head of the valley the location has a blissfully remote feel, but for those who wish to explore will find Ambleside, Coniston, Hawkshead, Grasmere and Windermere only 4 miles away.

The Cottage provides endless access to low and high level walks in the Langdale Valley, some of the most photographed landscapes in the Lake District National Park, and you'll soon see why.

Guests cant fail to be wowed by the more than 200 lakes and tarns that give this National Park its name. The Lakes of Windermere and Coniston are a short drive away and offer a wide range of water based activities. Closer to the cottage are the lakes of Blea Tarn and Rydal water which offer the opportunity for remote open water wild swimming surrounded by the spectacular mountainous scenery of the National Park.

This location is an obvious choice for a walking holiday in the Lake District National Park. If you want big imposing summits to conquer there is no shortage to be found at the head of the Valley, all with names that conjure up the spirit of Wainwright and the Lake District National Park. The Langdale Pikes, Pavey Ark, Crinkle Crags and Bowfell are all close by.

The adjacent Wasdale and Borrowdale Valleys with their spectacular lakes bring more superb routes within easy reach, and are traditional starting points for an ascent of England’s highest summit, Scafell Pike.

For those who prefer a more relaxing ramble rather than serious mountains the location will not disappoint as it boasts a wealth of lower level routes where you will find unmatched panoramas of beautiful countryside to charm you at every turn.

If Mountain Biking is your thing then the area offers a huge range of interconnected bridleways to explore and if this isn’t enough only a short drive away (or if you are really energetic a 10km ride) is Grizedale Forest with its network of bridleways, forest roads and, the “piece de resistance”, the infamous North Face Trail.

Chapel Stile village itself has a small shop, a cafe and an acclaimed Lake District country pub, The Wainwrights Inn. Stroll further into the Langdale Valley and you'll find the peaceful atmosphere and spectacular views continue..... with a few more notable pubs on the way.

Whatever you are seeking in the Lake District National Park, Fountain Cottage is a perfect central location.

Belinda and I live in the Lake District . Belinda is a Chiropractor and I am retired. We are passionate about the outdoors and spend all of our free time walking, mountaineering, mountain biking , climbing and running. We came to the Lakes for many years before moving here and fell in love with the beauty and solitude the Langdale valley offers in all seasons. Having fallen in love with Fountain Cottage in 2012 our vision was to create a luxurious home away from home, a place to relax and forget about the stresses of everyday life and not just another holiday cottage. Fountain Cottage is a fantastic base with easy access to the Langdale Valley and the Southern Lakes which offers endless opportunities for exploring and experiencing the majestic Lakeland scenery.
