Neighbourhood highlights

The word that describes Totnes best is quirky. It has a fascinating array of health food shops, cafes, tradititional and unconventional medicines, handicrafts and markets and art shops to charm its visitors.

Totnes is right on the river Dart and trips can leave for all over the South Devon coast daily and when visitors come into Totnes a main feature of the high street is the Eastgate Arch and Clock Tower that straddles it. Then right at the top of the town is the ruins of Totnes castle, which has views of both Dartmoor and across the town.

A real treat not to be missed is the Totnes Cinema, which has recently been refurbished through a community project. It really does offer a complete quirky night out at the cinema. It's a real mix of the old and new in both its appearance and range of films that it offers and quite uniquely has a cocktail lounge.

Totnes markets and fayres are a real attraction too. The main market has been there for hundreds of years and is on the Market Square three-quarters of the way up the high street just past the clock tower. It operates every Friday and Saturday from 08:45 to 16:30 and 17:30 in the summer months. It has food plants, bric-a-brac, clothes and jewellery for a really unique shopping experience. In the summer there are also street entertainers who specialise in medieval music. There is also a specialised food market every third Sunday.

Speaking of food and drink.

There is a great selection of pubs, restaurants, cafes and takeaways in Totnes High Street.
Adventuring all around the South Hams and Torbay area will reveal many culinary delights.

The Willow Vegetarian Restaurant is at the top of the high street and always gets great reviews and we especially like the selection of side salads with whatever your choice of mains my be. Our favourites are the vegetarian and vegan cakes all served with a friendly smile.

The Hairy Barista, right up the top of the high street, is a cosy cake paradise so anyone with a sweet tooth will be in a cafe heaven.

Pie Street has the best pies in town with all types in all sizes. With their super friendly staff and daily specials all freshly made with an amazing choice of 5 different gravies your mood will be lifted and maybe also your waistband.

Maisie's Cafe at the bottom of the high street in Ticklemore street is very unassuming and laid back, great for a relaxed breakfast and most importantly serves up the best deals on Devon cream teas in town.

The Steam Packet Inn is the perfect riverside watering hole, where they serve a wide range of real ales amongst all the other delights and is a lovely place to spend an afternoon drinking by the river.
