The space

THE PROPERTY

The "cabin" is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath small log home nestled in a 20 acre wooded parcel in a community abutting 10,000 acres of protected wildlife preserve. 2.5 hours from DC, it's 20 minutes of winding mountain gravel from the nearest paved road, offering nearly complete isolation. The nearest full time neighbor is 2 miles away. The view is a mixture of mountain and woods and the elevation is just enough to offer the perceived effects of "mountain air." It's great for relaxation and deeper sleep. We have spectacular sunsets to help you settle into the right evening mood, and clear night skies of star-gazing to help keep you there. During the day, the wildlife is varied and abundant including everything from many different types of deer to bears to wild turkeys, and some of the best bird-watching in the area with peregrine falcons, hawks, hummingbirds, even frequent sightings of the elusive scarlet tanager. You're welcome to enjoy it all on a rigorous hike or right from the comfort of the cabin. Either way, this is not a very touristy place to be, so come intent on long country drives to see anything else or just settle in for some true relaxation.

BED AND ... BREAKFAST?

Before coming to the country, I was an award winning chef, cookbook author and DC restaurateur featured in the single edition Celebrated Chefs of DC (DC's top 50 chefs). Food is included. For breakfast, lunch and snacking there is almost always cereal, yogurt, fruit, cheese and crackers, microwave popcorn, coffee, tea, something for lunches and some kind of chocolate. The grocery store is quite a drive and restaurants are few. You're welcome to what's in the house, or to bring additional items you want around. For dinner, please let me know any dietary requirements or preferences you have and I'll work something up. I can accommodate any special diets and am happy to cook for you. There's some regular home cooking in the pictures.

YOUR ROOM

The room is a small private walk-out with a double bed. There is a guest bath for your exclusive use.

ACCESS

You have full access to the entire house and property including entertainment features like Wifi, wireless printer and 36" flat panel TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime and major network streaming news channels. Come and go as you please at any time of the day or night.

THE AREA

Historic Moorefield is a small city surrounded by farms and a little manufacturing influence. If you're into photography and scenic drives, the farms dotting the landscape are a great opportunity. Petersburg and Romney are both within driving distance for a day's trip if you're intent on hunting down history, but if you're coming to relax then park the car and pretend you don't know how to get anywhere (because you won't).

FEE DETAILS

I change the sheets and generally clean before and after each guest. As this is remote, the grocery store is about 40 minutes away and I make a trip for each reservation to make sure everything's topped off. Rather than raise the nightly rates, there is a one time "cleaning fee" of $40 no matter how long the visit to cover all of that. The $30 extra per night for couples covers food.

The house was adorable and the listing was accurate. It is on the smaller side and the room is a tight fit for 2 people but it's a nice and clean place. Gordon was a great chef who worked well with my friend's food allergies and sensitivities. Unfortunately, it was rainy and we didn't get to hike much but that can't be controllled. The area is beautiful-the road to the house has a lot of curves-heads up of you get carsick.

Spectacular view through the window-filled wall facing the mountains in the living room. Wonderfully secluded location with modern amenities and clean. Enjoyed hammock time looking out to the mountain view with a cup of coffee in the morning. Bedrooms are downstairs and have walkout patio area through sliding glass doors. Bed was very comfortable. Separate bathrooms. Guests are welcome to adjust house temperature. Unique and fun life experience to watch a skilled chef prepare your dinner and provide tailored instruction. The meals were truly personalized, delicious, and cooked with feeling. We enjoyed free flowing conversation and appreciated the authenticity. Gordon was welcoming, inclusive, as well as attentive to requests and positively responsive to direct communication. Wildlife "encounters" included a deer (a.k.a., Becky) that took a nap right below the deck, a hummingbird, and carpenter bees... they count too!

It was such a memorable experience living at Gordon's place. As city dwellers it was a treat to drive past farms, hills, and lush greens on the way to the house. Upon arriving later than we estimated, Gordon anticipated our hunger and cooked us a sumptuous dinner, ending the meal with a sunset with chatting and lounging in a hammock on his deck. We slept in and took a foresty walk the next day. While pleasant, the bites and the summer heat brought us back to the house. Contented with clocking in our nature hours, it was nice to come back to the comfy and the magically insect-less house to have a good shower and read. One of the nicest moments was lying in the hammock the next morning, nibbling on an apple, listening to the chimes and birdcalls, and feeling the cool breeze before saying goodbye and see you again. Thanks again for making us feel at home Gordon x

Just enjoyed a very restful stay in Gordon's idyllic hilltop home. While we took lovely hikes every day, just out the front door, the bulk of our time was spent at the house decompressing from busy city life, and this is the perfect place to do it: comfy couches, a deck overlooking the mountains, birdsong in the air... And in the evenings, Gordon presented us with exquisite dinners-- truly the best meals this foodie has had in a long time. Just a delightful experience. And a shout out to West Virginia as well, where I had never spent time before-- it's a beautiful place with terrific people and much to discover.

I had a restful two-night stay at Gordon's remote WV hideaway, which was exactly what I wanted for my mini writing retreat. The house is cozy and well-maintained, and the scenery was lovely. I also brought my dogs along for the weekend, and they had a great time scampering around on the deck and exploring all the good smells along the secluded road. Gordon is a very accommodating host, and he made me wonderful meals (such a bonus!). While the house is definitely off the beaten path, it's not terribly far to local activities...I never left the house except to walk the dogs or look at the stars, which was exactly what I wanted. I would recommend Gordon's place to anyone looking for a restful getaway...thanks for the hospitality!!

Gordon met us at the gate and had us follow him up to the house. Everything was as advertised. Gordon was a very gracious host and the house was very clean. We had a very relaxed and enjoyable weekend. Gordon cooked us very delicious meals. We are part of a CSA and had just picked up our box of produce so he had some goodies to work with. His place is very close to some logging trails which make for good hikes or you can simply relax and sleep in. We did a bit of both. Overall we enjoyed our visit and would love to go back!
