About this listing
Our Lodge is for one "group" (or individual) at a time. It's comfy and cozy yet spacious. On 275 acres with frontage on the gorgeous James River, you have over 5 miles of forested hiking trails all to yourself. Great fishing! Canoe, swim, picnic.
In the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, we offer privacy, rustic luxury, and an extremely well-equipped kitchen. Bring your groceries and cook to suit yourself! Lots to do on the property, fishing in our little pond or on the James River, rent canoes, hike, come brush our horses, relax, or go sight-seeing. Located in historic Appomattox County, you have the Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park and the Museum of the Confederacy nearby, as well as other sights of Civil War interest. Baines Books in the Town of Appomattox offers a coffee shop with live music through the weekend. There's lots of antique stores in Appomattox, and a variety of venues for eating out. Nearby Lynchburg offers Amazement Square for the children, and a number of breweries for their parents. The Brew Trail and plenty of wine tasting is in easy reach. Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson's "country retreat" is 40 minutes away. So much to do. Or just do nothing and get away from it all. Come relax with us!
Our guests have sole occupancy to our Lodge and full access to our 275 forested acres. We offer canoe rental, day fishing trips, and riverside picnics with privacy. We are unique in our area of Central Virginia, Appomattox County.
Interaction with guests
We try to revolve our schedules around our guests' needs. Very fun, guided nature hikes are available for a fee, We encourage you to come visit us (we're across the road, a mile from door to door), visit our horses, and call if you need anything, if anything breaks, or if your trash cans are full. Otherwise, we leave you alone from check-in on. You only need to call us when you leave, if you like your privacy.
Our Lodge and Retreat are located within a bend of the lovely James River. The neighbors are very supportive of and friendly towards the Lodge and our guests. They are always happy to give directions or other information.
Although the James River is not visible from the Lodge, the trip to the river, along our forested roads and trails, is beautiful and serene and private. Upon arriving at the river, the scene is astonishing, especially when you realize you have it all to yourself. It's so lovely you will want to stay and stay.
Most of our guests drive here, but the Lynchburg Airport is a sweet place to fly into, and we use it regularly. Let us know if you'd like us to pick you up (up to 3 people). Richmond Airport is 2 1/2 hours away, Dulles is 4 hours. The roads in Appomattox County, where we're situated, are well-maintained. If you have an SUV or other car with 4-wheel drive, we would encourage you to bring it for ease of driving our road to the river. We also offer a pickup truck for use on the Retreat property only: $35/day or $100/week. You can pile a gang in it and head down for a day at the river, and not worry about getting it dirty...
Other things to note
We love to answer questions. We are a forestry conservation easement for perpetuity, and a Virginia certified Green Lodging facility. When you stay with us, you are literally helping save a forest for the world, as well as having less impact than usual on the environment due to a number of "green" measures we have implemented in the Lodge. You probably won't notice most of them, if any. If you want your kids to learn to fish (or yourself) just ask us.
No smoking in the Lodge, and as we are in a forest, cigarettes can't just be "tossed." We respect our trees and wildlife, and ask that you do the same.
Pets are welcome (they are part of your family afterall!), but must have been treated with "Pet Armor," "Frontline," or something similar, both to protect them, and to keep the Lodge flea and tick free. We have a daily fee of $12/pet/day. We do have wildlife in the area, so recommend leashes for many breeds and individual dogs. We also have geese, chickens and horses, so dogs MUST be restrained when on the office/house side of the road.
Cancel up to 7 days before your trip and get a 50% refund plus service fees back.
My husband and I love being outside, and have drawn on a lifetime of experiences to provide a setting we think you'll enjoy. We put our entire property into a permanent forestry conservation easement so that the property can never be any less private than it now is. We love national parks, with their views and trails, and opens spaces, but you have to share them with others. When you're a guest here, you don't have to share! When we want to be on vacation, we go camp at our river front. It's that beautiful and relaxing. We work hard, and in between, to relax, we read, watch movies on Netflix, or take a nap. We leave our property rarely, but when we do, we love eating at the restaurants in Appomattox because they are low-key and you can "come as you are." Lots of farmers here, and they dress casually, so we do, too. We feel like we're always on vacation, but you won't be able to tell that when you see how clean and great the Lodge is--we work hard to get it like that for you. Once you're here, we want you to feel like we're available to you if you need us or have any problems in the Lodge. No one has ever run out of supplies that we know of, but sometimes, something breaks and we will be "on it" right away. Come relax with us!
