Our stay at Colonel's Inn was simply the worst experience of our lives. Didn't meet the host, Colonel Rao, as he doesn't stay there. The place is managed by his staff (3 of them). We reached Colonel's Inn on 9th May (evening) & found the staff helpful initially. However from the next day (10 May) onwards, they stopped talking to us & ignored us for the reason best known to them. Absolutely nothing happened between us & them. One of them is the caretaker & the other is his assistant (that's what we understood). Breakfast served was not up to the expected standards & they generally snubbed us making it clear that we were no longer welcome there. We found the staff rather uncouth and unprofessional to say the least. Our holiday was ruined by them and we decided to cut it short & return home. We felt cheated that we had to cut short our vacation due to misbehaviour of Colonel Inn's staff even after paying the total amount payable in full. Airbnb should ensure that hosts stay at the facility to avoid making guests hostage to the kind of staff Colonel's Inn has. If not possible, there should be a system in place to vet the staff employed to avoid hiring of such uncouth & unprofessional people. Also, food sold at extra cost should be standardised & rates should be publicly displayed. The staff there were happy to see us leave a day early and we were in fact happier to leave the place. I conclude that Airbnb market in India is neither mature or professional enough to offer decent stays. This was our first experience with Airbnb as we prefer to stay in hotels generally. We will be very careful while choosing where to stay when we travel next time. I will not entertain any further communication in this regard as we want to forget our experience at Colonel's Inn quickly.
Response from Colonel:
We are equally disappointed at the guest response. When the guest says "Absolutely nothing happened between us & them. " and then goes on to berate the establishment, we are unable to figure out what has gone wrong. We too would like to recommend that AIRBNB does not send such guests to its members.
What a comfortable place to stay! The room was exactly as in the pictures, the room and main bathroom downstairs were clean and spacious and the upstairs room and bathroom were really cosy - our 11-year-old was simply thrilled with it! The furniture was old-world and quite adequate. The light streaming in through the windows, mingling with the peeling church bells, made a delightful background to our family tea ritual. Breakfast goes with the room, and lunch and dinner can be ordered if required. We had lunch and dinner in-house every day of our stay, and not only did it keep our tummies happy, but it was also delicious, freshly cooked, and appetisingly served! All this at very reasonable prices too... Shakti and Chandrakanth and the lady help (the caretakers) did a very good job of making us feel at home. The botanical gardens are a 2-minute walk away, and there are a whole lot of shops within easy reach to the place. Overall, this is a family-friendly place we're sure to stay at every time we visit Ooty, and we heartily recommend it to all discerning travellers :-)
Had a great stay at Colonels Inn.. The rooms were very spacious and had all basic facilities needed for a home stay.. The home-stay is ideally located in the heart of the town and you can cover some of the near by places by walking.. Colonel Rao and his son suraj was very helpful.. Even if they were not physically present at the house, they were in touch through phone to ensure our stay was comfortable.. Special mention for Shakti (caretaker) who assisted us throughout..
The Colonel house is a very good maintained bungalow in the midst of the busy streets of Ooty. The bungalow demonstrates the old British style architecture which is a treat. House was pretty clean and spacious. Food was also good. Our stay was very comfortable with the help of the caretaker Shakthi who took care of us very well. It was money worth spent.
