Studio apartment above a garage, with private entrance, off-street parking. 325 sq feet including full kitchen, tub and shower, queen bed (memory foam), dining table, TV. Located on lovely Lake Sacajawea with its tree-filled park. Walk or bike the perimeter (3+ miles) or part of the lake. House is short distance from the hospital on the opposite side of the lake. Many of our guests are "travelers," medical professionals working on short-term contracts.

The space
The house was built in 1981 from salvage from the eruption of Mt St Helens. Our family had a cabin on the north fork of the Toutle River which was washed away in the debris flow. My dad was eligible for what was then a low-interest loan (8 1/2%) from the government and built the house next to our own home. My uncle had timbered property that had to be cut because of the inundation of ash and he gave Dad permission to take whatever Weyerhaeuser left behind. He knew a guy with a portable sawmill nearby and they milled all the lumber. Then Dad, who was distinctly NOT handy and in his 60s, built the house with the help of a brother-in-law in his late 70s. Incredibly, they pulled it off, and it is now being visited by people from all over the world.

My husband and I cared for my elderly mom in Longview until she passed in March 2017. We bought her home and are renting all but one bedroom which we keep for ourselves for frequent visits. We moved back to Oregon in Fall 2017. I have owned the Oregon property since 1986. Both homes are furnished with as much natural and organic as possible, and with little or no plastic or petroleum! My own preference. Linens are dried on the line in summer; I prefer the smell of the ocean breeze on my sheets and towels over the softness and artificial fragrance of softeners and dryer sheets. We absolutely love being hosts; it's like a different party every night! Some guests come in, we shake hands, they go up to their room and don't come out til they leave in the morning. Others are eager to share a glass of wine and connect. Both kinds of guests are welcome; we love the diversity. And we have had almost no negative experiences. 99% of our guests have been courteous, curious and friendly. We are not traveling the world right now, but the world is coming to us!

During your stay

We travel between our Longview home and our primary residence in North Bend, Oregon, and may not be here when you are. Before Covid, we visited Longview every two weeks. Since Covid, we have rarely visited the Longview house. But we have a housekeeper in Longview and are always available by phone or text if we are not in town.
