Interaction with guests
I live in the building and there is always someone nearby to help you out--the building superintendent also lives a block away. I have lived in NYC for 30 years and am happy to help with suggestions of places to visit and more.
Our Melrose neighborhood is lively and very friendly. It is one of the fastest growing areas in New York City and full of immigrants and working-class people from all over the world, as well as long time New Yorkers. It can be loud on weekend nights in the summers with cars and music. But with the air conditioner on, I don't think you will be bothered. I want to be perfectly clear to foreign visitors: this is not an upscale or expensive neighborhood--for that you should stay in Manhattan. But I'm sure you will enjoy it here if you come.
We are just a two minute walk from the #2 and #5 subway, both are express trains that will have you in Manhattan in minutes. Central Park is 15 minutes away, midtown Manhattan is about 20 minutes by train. We are a 15 minute walk from Harlem.
Other things to note
There are two extremely sociable and friendly cats (Rollei & Babycat) who live in the building. They are NEVER in the apartment where you will be staying, but you may see them occasionally as you enter or leave the building. They don't bite, scratch or meow--they basically just want to be petted.
There is a laundromat across the street, just steps away. This apartment is on the 3rd floor (in Europe this is considered the 2nd floor) and we do not have an elevator.
