About this listing

Welcome to paradise!

We named this land ‘Monaratenna’ after the flocks of peacocks that strut across it. The river winds its way down to the sea and the secluded broad beach.
Dine in the sea-sand restaurant, take a refreshing swim in the pool, go kayaking, enjoy a boat trip and relax or be active in the yoga hall.
Back of Beyond - Kahandamodara is an eco lodge close to Tangalle with a 4-bedroom bungalow, a cottage and two 2-bedroom villas. The units can be booked together or separately.

The space

The eco lodge boarders the river Urubokka Oya, with the estuary (modara, which the village is named after) just a few minutes by boat or foot. The secluded beach is just a 5-minute walk away - a lovely place to start and end your day.

We do not only share these beautiful 14 acres with peacocks but with countless other birds, as part of the land is reforested with over 100 trees planted to date. The rest of the land is reverted to a dry zone farm. Our orchard with nearly over 40 varieties provides most of the fruits and vegetables we serve our guests. We have also started a butterfly garden, creating a flower-, fragrance- and joy-filled patches around the land.

Welcome to paradise!

The eco lodge’s bungalow, cottage and villas are located to maximize interaction with the outdoors while maintaining individual privacy. In total there are 9 rooms for around 25 adults, all rooms have attached bathrooms with hot water and are equipped with mosquito nets. The units can be booked together or separately.

We have now expanded the facilities with a yoga hall, a sea-sand restaurant, and a brand new swimming pool thus making it an ideal retreat, also for yoga groups, meditation retreats, corporate training or family get-togethers.

Set by a green lawn that rolls down to the scrub and pasture the Siyambala Bungalow is ideal for families and those who love to watch peacocks strutting around open lawns.

Named after the Siyambala tree that shades the entrance, this open format bungalow has four bedrooms, areas for relaxing and dinning at two levels. It can accommodate 8 adults and 4 children and is given out as a single unit. The large open spaces are specially designed with families and friends in mind. As with our other bungalows, we have added a pantry with a fridge which is particularly useful for families with young children.

The four bedrooms vary in character: The two rooms by the dining area are ideal for children and grandparents. The upstairs room with the stars coming in, is perfect for a honeymoon or for dreaming teenagers, and the room down the corridor is almost self-sufficient with a little veranda and extra sleeping in the attic.

We are a family of 5 from New Zealand, but with some Sri Lankan heritage. This was our first trip to Sri Lanka with our kids (10, 7 and 3). We really wanted to show them the country and allow them to experience daily life in Sri Lanka. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay than Back of Beyond Tangalle in terms of these aspirations. The accomodation is set in the most beautiful landscape just back from the beach. Pottering around the roads around the resort, our kids could see fishermen going about their business, comings and goings in the villages and the superb bird life around the lagoon. I will never forget lying in the pool and watching eagles play on the updrafts as a thunder storm approached. There were plenty of opportunities to get out and about to see things - Udawalawae National Park was a highlight as was turtle watching on Rekawa Beach. The staff were extraordinarily friendly and caring - they had that rare mix of appearing laid back but being highly efficient at the same time. The food was marvellous - authentic, tasty and healthy. We had no problem eating at the resort for 8 days straight. We were all sorry to leave and hope to be back one day soon.

A great place, quiet, wonderful birds, the best place to resource one self. The little restaurant is exactly what you need. Any time again.

We came to this place after doing Adams Peak and a hike in Ella. We could not have asked for a better place to rest our tired feet and replenish our soul. The staff are friendly, welcoming and will try their utmost best to accommodate your requests. Although we did not meet the host himself, the staff described him as a wonderful, kind person who has a love of nature. It was a pity we did not meet him, perhaps next time. The surrounding is so beautiful and inspirational - an ideal spot to meditate and reflect. The food is amazing and refreshing. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone who wants to escape their busy lifestyle. Thank you to the host and the staff for accommodating us in such a short notice.

We had a wonderful time at Back of beyond in Tangalle, the property, food and service were amazing! Nelson, Mahesh, Indika and the rest of the team were wonderful, cooking up delicious treats and enduring our stay was memorable. We kayaked to the beach, swam in the lovely pool, cycled in and around the property and had loads of fun in the yoga pavilion. We had the opportunity to see so much local wildlife, from lake snakes to gorgeous lizards(one residing in our roof-so amazing!) Our accommodation was amazing, plenty of space for all ten of us, the rooms and bathrooms were amazing. One thing to note is that the property isn't exclusively yours, there are other smaller chalets available and you do share the common areas(dining, yoga pavilion, pool, grounds etc) with the other guests. We all fell in love with Zulu and Zari-the property's dogs, the sweetest, cheekiest little things! If you love to be close to nature and have all your needs taken care of by an excellent team then this is the place for you! Loved our time here. Thank you to Yohan and his team. Cheers, Shani. The bungalow is certainly off the beaten track but having our own car this was not an issue. The design and layout are fantastic and once you get used to being in the 'jungle' you really relax and enjoy what is around you. The staff and food ae fantastic and everyone is extremely helpful. This was a very different but enjoyable Christmas day

Wow, just wow! This place was amazing!!! A real treat at the end of our holiday. The properties were stunning (we stayed in 2 of the villas) and really well thought out. Out of the 8 places we stayed all over Sri Lanka this was the cleanest, smartest and most welcoming of all. Johan and the rest of the staff were so quick and attentive it really helped us unwind and make the most of the stay. The food was delicious (thanks Nelson!) and really well priced with huge portions! Eating in the dining room near the pool was lovely and we enjoyed seeing the new wildlife tracks in the freshly-raked sand each morning. We went out on the boat with 2 of the staff who rowed us to the nearby beach- highly recommended! The pool was a great new addition and perfect for our 4 year old. The wildlife on site was abundant (I think our highlight were the peacocks and the baby water buffalo). The clean sheets, abundance of clean fluffy towels, and smart mosquito nets were appreciated and the sound of the waves on the nearby beach was the perfect soundtrack. Really a 10 out of 10 place!

I am the founder of Back of Beyond - eco lodges in Sri Lanka.
Back of Beyond was an idea started due to my love for travel and nature, and the difficulty faced in trying to find suitable accommodation to suit my budget and taste.

I am based in Colombo but I travel frequently to my eco retreats in Sigiriya, Yala, Anuradhapura and near Tangalle. Hence, most often I do not get to meet the AirBnB guests, but you will be looked after well by the wonderful staff at the different bungalows.

Relax & enjoy nature!
