The space

Large sunny kitchen, warm and inviting dining room and living room. Two bedrooms, one with double bed, the other with a bunkbed - the lower bunk is a double bed and the upper bunk is a single. Futon couch in living room can pull out to become a double bed as well. One bathroom, with tub. Large back deck overlooking large yard and open space. House stocked with toys, games, children's books, bikes and scooters. Quiet street, yet just a few blocks from cafes and shops, walking distance to downtown, close to many bus lines, and 1 mile to BART station which gives you easy access all over the Bay Area. Large park, sports fields and playground just a few blocks away.

Other things to note

A few things to note:
The bathtub drains to a greywater system. That means that the bathwater flows directly to the fruit trees outside. It drains slowly. It takes about 5-10 minutes for the tub to drain completely after each shower. If you request beforehand, I can attach it back to the sewer system. All that water will go to waste, but it will drain quickly.

Mattresses:
All are futons. The one in the main bedroom is a new futon with a 1 inch latex pad. It's very comfortable.
The futon mattresses on the bunkbed are 100% cotton, and firmer. The lower, double bed is moderately firm, but I think, quite comfortable. The upper, single is very firm.
The futon couch in the livingroom is all foam, and quite comfortable.

Orli is a wonderful host. She prepared us for the expectations in her home during our stay, so everything went very smoothly. The home was clean and had all the necessities. We were running late during check out and she gave us extra time and space to collect all of our things in private. I would recommend staying here to anyone who wants an authentic Berkeley experience.

Spartan retreat in Berkeley... This house is located in a small neighborhood near San Pablo Ave. Close to BART (you can hear the train horns at night.) The neighbors were quiet and friendly and it seemed like an ok neighborhood. The house has a great garden area and deck that has a rural feel. There is trailer and shed on the back of the property but there is plenty of room to enjoy the outdoors. The house is basic, basic. If you are used to some modern comforts then you might consider staying elsewhere. Cons: 1. The house has a greywater system which waters the garden. This is good but makes the tub drain incredibly slow. We were 4 people and had to shower with other people's dirty water because waiting for it to drain would have been too time consuming. 2. We decided vampires lived here because there are only 2 mirrors in the whole house. 3. Several electrical outlets don't work, finding ones to use was tricky, without disrupting others. 4. The internet is wired and can only have one user at a time. We had a lot of work and had to go out of the house for places with wi-fi to use our laptops. 5. The beds are terrible. The semi comfortable one was the futon in the living room, the rest were tantamount to sleeping on wooden slats. We were a group of dancers going through a demanding physical program, we are used to physical discomfort, but the beds shattered our sleep plans. We could have put up with anything else, but this one did us in. Pros: 1. Location. The house is near grocery stores and eateries. We did most of our shopping at Trader Joe's on San Pablo Ave. 2. Quaint house. 3. Eco friendly home 4. Host responds quickly This is a case of you get what you pay for, unless you do like this sort of basic and natural living.

Response from Oloewenberg:
I'm sorry you weren't comfortable here. I have added a latex mattress pad to the main bed to make it softer. The rest of your complaints have not been addressed, but this is the first time I'm hearing complaints on those issues. I believe I was upfront about the lack of WiFi in the Airbnb account.

Orli's house is lovely, in a quiet residential neighborhood, and has a yard with wonderful plantings. Our stay was very comfortable and the vegetarian kitchen was well organized and well supplied. Beds were all comfortable. Orli is ecologically-minded and has an outside drying rack for laundry. It is also admirable that she uses grey water for the garden. Visitors who use internet should inquire about bringing their own cable. Orli is very helpful and responds quickly to emails. We were pleased to stay in her home.

This house is quite and restfull, close to the Bart to go Downton. When we arrived our host waited more than one hour cause our plane was delayed. We even received nice chocolates! We will defenitvely recommend this place for you and your family.

The place felt like home! We love the neighborhood, the spaciousness or the house both inside and out, and my kids loved the toys and books! Would definitely stay again. My husband (the side sleeper) insists I report that the master bed in very firm and best suited for back sleepers. He found all the other beds to be more comfortable. I was fine on my back. Overall a great experience had by all.
