Description

The space

KumbukRiver has won the travel Oscar as the world’s leading eco-lodge and is among the world’s top 10 most unusual hotels. It is also among the top getaways for adventurous honeymooners. Nestled on the banks of a secluded river on the northern edge of Yala, nature’s pristine glory makes the location picture-perfect and a haven for nature lovers.
The cabin of the lorry has been transformed into a compact, air-conditioned, cosy bedroom with a glass wall presenting a panoramic view of the river below. An extended modern bathroom with hot water shower and an open lounge where guests get to eat and relax listening to nature's sound effects complete yet another fascinating accommodation option. Couples get to sip coffee in the driver's cabin while absorbing the romance of the nature that surrounds them.

Guest access

Getting to KumbukRiver from Colombo, Galle, Yala, Hill country or Arugambay is simple with a great road network. Final 2kms of access way, however, is an ‘off-road’ experience especially when it rains. In case, if the road is not motorable at the time you arrive, we provide parking facility in the village and offer a free pick-up on a mini tractor or a tuk-tuk, depending on road condition. Many visitors find this an adventurous experience.

Interaction with guests

Once in the eco-resort, you are in a world of your own, surrounded by the beautiful wild. It’s a place to just relax and unwind. You may play in the river, explore nature trails or be amazed by the bird life. Our Lodge Manager, come to be loved by all visitors, will be your host as he wax eloquent on wildlife and local history. He will be happy to accompany you to a nearby Suspension Bridge and on nature trails at no extra charge. Udawalawe Elephant Park too is a relatively short drive.

The neighbourhood

There are plenty of ancient sights and famous Buddhist temples in and around Buttala. If you want to go on safari to Yala National Park, we can assist you with your booking. Our staff will readily wake up early to pack you a picnic meal. You may plan to return to the eco-lodge, arrive here after having visited the park or move on to the southern coast with Yala as your last stop; based on where you are arriving from.

Getting around

Most guests arrive in their own rented vehicles. Some guests arrive by bus and take a tuk-tuk from Buttala. If you don't have your own transport, tuk-tuk is a great way to travel around here. We can also assist you in hiring safari jeep to enter Yala National Park.

Even though KumbukRiver is about 65 km to the Katagamuwa entrance of Yala National Park, it is a distance you may anyway have to traverse through if you are arriving from the hill country on your way to the south or east coast or travelling from south to hill country. Geographically we are located on the Yala Buffer Zone on the banks of a river that is the official border of the park though you have to drive to the Katagamuwa or Palatupana entrances. Visitors going south wake up around 4am to visit Yala on their last day at KumbukRiver while visitors coming from the southern coast will first have their safari and reach us in the afternoon for their 1st day. We are in a village called Okkampitiya in Buttala, just 16 km to Wellawaya, the gateway to the hill country on one side and the southern coast on the other, or Colombo through Uda Walawe National Park.

New gate to Yala is a short drive from KumbukRiver:-
On the Buttala-Kataragama Road, a breezy drive from KumbukRiver is the latest entrance to Yala National park. The good news is that on this block, there’s much less traffic inside the park unlike through Katagamuwa and Palatupana.

Other things to note

Please check on the availability before you make instant bookings. KumbukRiver is part of a social responsibility initiative and guest rates are currently subsidized, considering the costs involved in maintaining such a unique concept off-the-beaten track. The setting allows you to be at one with nature and our staff epitomizes true Sri Lankan hospitality.

Staying in the Jungle Lorry at KumbukRiver was the highlight of our trip in Sri Lanka. The Jungle Lorry is such a clever way to reuse a metal artifact that would have otherwise sat in a junk yard creating more unwanted waste. Inside the Lorry was absolutely gorgeous. The space was perfect for two people. My favorite parts were the amazing glass windows that allowed me and my partner to overlook the pristine Kumbuk River and the porch added on to the lorry. The porch was our favorite place to chill and relax. It is also where we were served our 5 star Sri Lankan meals. The food was absolutely to die for! In addition, the bathroom was exceptionally clean and brilliant. There is tinted glass that allows you to see out into the jungle while at the same time maintains your total privacy, so you feel you are showering out in nature. In regards to the hospitality, our host Mr Gamini, treated us as if we were kings, which we certainly are not. We were just two young travellers looking for a unique adventure. Mr. Gamini was also kind enough to give us a tour of the grounds, explained a little bit of the history of Kumbuk River, and told us about the village and the surrounding area. He even arrange for us to visit the local primary school where we were able to interculturally interact with the young local students. Throughout our stay we were able to have very candid conversations with Mr. Gamini , and we were able to learn more about the objectives of the eco-lodge and how the enterprise intends to expand while staying true to its goals of protecting the river and the surrounding jungle. Overall, we absolutely LOVED our stay in the Jungle Lorry, and we hope we are lucky enough to one day stay there again! If you have any doubts about staying here, you should just go ahead and book because Kumbuk River is one of the most magical places on Earth.
