About this listing

NOW WITH A REAL QUEEN BED! Includes 2 Monterey Bay Aquarium passes (a $100 value!). This comfortable studio is located behind our main residence on 9 acres. It features knotty pine paneling, cork flooring, travertine bathroom, and beautiful furnishings, including a Queen bed, new Lazyboy sofa, reclining chair, and table for two. We are eco-friendly: using only natural cleaning and laundry products for those sensitive to chemicals, natural fiber linens, and solar power for our electricity.

The space

This space has previously been a full-time rental and an office. We have now created a wonderful place for visitors to use as their home base while exploring the Monterey Peninsula and Salinas areas (which are each about a 15 minute drive).
The kitchenette offers a small refrigerator (with access to a large freezer in the adjacent hallway), single burner hot plate, toaster oven, and coffee maker. There is a BluRay/CD player, receiver, and TV. An additional fold-out foam mattress may also be available at a minimal fee for one extra person; please inquire.

Guest access

The suite has a private entrance and is self-sufficient. Guests are welcome to enjoy the patio and other outside areas. Please let us know if you'd like to have access to the hot tub; we use a natural enzyme system rather than chlorine and need to monitor its use.

Interaction with guests

We have lived in this location for 35 years, so we have a good knowledge of the area and are happy to share that with out guests. We can also offer expert information about agriculture and bicycling (both mountain and road).

Other things to note

Monterey Bay Aquarium and Steinbeck Center guest passes are included; please inquire. Some discount wine tasting passes are also available.

This is a wonderful place to stay. We were in Monterey for a vacation. Kay made us feel very welcome but also was very sensitive about our privacy. She has really thought of everything- we used the hot place to make eggs, had coffee , and toast. The view from the hilltop is spectacular out over those exquisite hills. It is quiet and natural, and we especially loved the pair of hummingbirds who were regulars at our back window. The bed was so comfortable which we were grateful for since we spent most of our daytime touring about in Carmel, Monterey, and Salinas. The peace and beauty at the end of the day was most welcome. We enjoyed talking to Kay, and she gave us good local advice and provided the perfect balance between being available and being scarce. She brought us fresh fruit, including strawberries, from the farmers market. The strawberries were the best I have had since my great uncles garden many years ago- so sweet and flavorful. She took good care of us, and we feel we had a truly authentic central California experience staying up on that wonderful hilltop.

Pros: -ease of WiFi access, ease of directions to the listing, plethora of information -Wide range of breakfast provided -Pleasant drive to Monterey Cons: -Beautiful view of the fence -Don't expect any privacy even though this is listed as entire place, studio is connected to host's home and you can hear everything including coughs in the middle of the night. -Not good for romantic get-aways, host is excessively hands-on.

Response from Kay:
If you look at our previous reviews, you will see that Gabrielle's viewpoint contradicts the majority’s opinions. Our photos and descriptions show that the studio is located just to the side of the main home (no shared walls), and that there is fencing around the perimeter to keep critters out but still enable guests to see deer, wild turkeys, etc. Other guests have appreciated the quiet and privacy offered. Airbnb’s three choices for listings are shared room, private room, or entire space, and since the studio is self-sufficient with its own entrance, "entire space" is accurate. I take the lead from my guests as to the level and preferred method of communication desired, and Gabrielle and Sky seemed to not want to meet or communicate, which I was happy to respect. However, as a conscientious host, I did phone them at 7:30 on the evening of their arrival to be sure they had received my directions and info for their requested late check-in because I had sent those twice via email with no response. They had booked our studio on short notice for two adults, so when I saw the next day that they were also traveling with a baby, I texted them (since texting is how she had communicated with me the previous evening) a polite note about the importance of providing accurate information at the time of requesting a reservation. Our listing states it's not suitable for infants or children (due to safety concerns such as hot tub, wildlife, steep hillside on part of property, etc.). I also said that it wasn't a problem for me since he was so young, and that I understand traveling with little ones is not always easy, but unfortunately they took offense to this… and I suspect that’s the reason for the critical review.

This studio is perfect for anyone wanting to visit Salinas/Monterey/Carmel. It is nestled in a secluded neighborhood in Salinas and yet is very centrally located as it is only 20 minutes away from downtown Salinas, the heart of Monterey, and Carmel-by-the-sea. We had our own car so it was easy to get around; may not be great for someone relying on public transportation. I loved the location of this studio; it was exactly what I was hoping for for a weekend away from L.A. traffic. It is surrounded by a gorgeous mountain view and nature - we saw several deer ambling about the property. The stars at night were spectacular. I wish we hadn't been so busy, I would have loved to just sit and enjoy the peace and quiet that this studio had to offer. Kay's instructions on how to arrive were perfect! Definitely wouldn't have found it without her step-by-step guide. We had a parking spot waiting for us in the driveway. We were a little late from our anticipated arrival but Kay was there to welcome us in, show us around the room and explain the particulars. She was very helpful in making food recommendations, many of which were also listed on her house handbook. She also pointed out the aquarium passes for our use during our stay as we let her know in advance that we were interested in visiting the aquarium. The passes were a huge help at the aquarium! We saw Kay a few times during our stay and each time she was very helpful. She kept the outside light on for us each night since we were arriving late from our sightseeing. The studio was just as pictured. We had a lovely and very comfortable bed, a couch, a reclining chair, table with two chairs, coffee table, a TV with cable, a toaster oven, mini-fridge, freezer, sink and all necessary kitchen basics (no stove -we didn't need one- but there is hot plate available), and closet space. Kay offered to get some breakfast items but we told her we planned to eat out; despite that, she was still nice enough to get us some breakfast snacks. She also had coffee, tea, and other drinks in the fridge for us. We used the TV, coffee maker, toaster oven, and blow dryer, all without a problem. Although a heater/air conditioner is in the room, we never had to use it as the weather was perfect during our stay and leaving the windows open was enough for us. A hotel with the closest price to this studio would not have been anywhere near as nice, comfortable, or beautiful. I would definitely pick this again over a hotel, especially with Kay's kindness, attention to detail, and immaculate housekeeping. Highly recommend.

Beautiful space and everything we needed for an amazing stay. Great communication, directions, fresh food from the farmer's market and tickets to the aquarium were wonderful perks. It was just 15-20 minutes to all of our activities. We saw a hummingbird, a family of deer and were able to hear the owl, but couldn't catch a full view of it-loved the nature on the hilltop. My husband and I wholeheartedly recommend Kay's place.

Very comfortable! Inside there were plenty of windows to make the room seem bigger! I most enjoyed your beautiful landscaping, esp. the fountain, meditation labyrinth, and Budhha statues. I also loved that I was able to see a hummingbird. She gave me some hiking tips, and told me a secret way to enter the adjoining county park.

I enjoy traveling and sharing ideas, and also offer life coaching illuminated by ancient Chinese wisdom. My husband and I recently sold our ag-related business and are exploring new options for our future, including spending more time with our grandchildren. We have lived in the Monterey/Salinas area for 36 years and enjoy the moderate year-round weather and amazing scenery. There are plentiful restaurants, events, and activities to discover.
We prefer to rent vacation homes rather than hotels when traveling, and have had great experiences doing so. In 2012 alone, I rented 12 different private homes for various trips (seminars, weddings, family reunions, holidays, recreation). I have been an Airbnb user for several years, and am happy to be able to offer a great space to travelers to our special area. My experience in visiting other rentals has helped me to become aware of what makes a space comfortable and home-like, and I welcome our guests to share their feedback and suggestions.
