Casa Romantica is all about the details! Reviews say it all, and we encourage future guests to read all previous comments from others who have stayed with us. Not only will you have 2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, a comfortable living area and full kitchen, but also enjoy your own private pool, 2 powerful AC units, 3 TVs, luxury linens and towels, Netflix, 2 bicycles, board games and books, and a 24/7 personal concierge, all in an EXCELLENT location!

The space
If you saw Casa Romantica featured on House Hunters International, you might know it as Casa de Mullet... business in the front, party in the back :)

Can’t decide between a “luxury” hotel with all the comforts of home or a more “authentic” experience renting a Nicaraguan house with fewer amenities? Casa Romantica bridges the gap and beats either choice by giving guests the privacy, space and authenticity of a true Nicaraguan colonial home while also providing higher end details not even found in Granada’s most expensive hotels, all in an EXCELLENT location.

The house is a perfect combination of historic colonial elements and modern amenities, and is even more beautiful at night. Wall sconces give a warm ambiance to the main living room, garden and pool areas and Granada's low light pollution levels make for incredible views of the night sky. Count the stars from the pool or watch a Nicaraguan thunderstorm from the comfortable sofa!

Reviews from previous guests say more than any listing could, so we encourage you to read through comments from our previous guests, but things we think make Casa Romantica a great choice for your stay in Granada are:

Perfect location - in colonial district and close to all attractions, but one street away from late night / early morning noise, so guests can enjoy a peaceful sleep and still walk to tourist attractions, great restaurants and nightlife in less than 5 minutes. Best street in Granada!

*Note: While Calle Santa Lucía is quieter than La Calzada or others between, guests sleeping in the downstairs bedroom might still hear some street noise. The upstairs bedroom is in the back of the house and on the second floor, so it is removed from almost all noise, but downstairs bedroom is on the street level and may experience more noise, especially during festival weeks (see calendar in photo section)*

Private indoor / outdoor pool - partially open to the sky for sun and partially covered by roof for shade. Pool starts around 3 feet deep and gradually gets to about 6 feet deep.

Roll down shades can divide pool and living areas for shade, privacy, or weather

Colonial details like 30 ft ceilings with polished cane, handmade Nicaraguan floor tiles, solid wood colonial columns, red tile rooftop and antique Granada doors used as decoration throughout the home

New (2017) and very powerful 2400 BTU air conditioning units in each bedroom for quick cool down and restful sleep

1800 thread count sheets (brought from US)

Ultra soft monogrammed waffle robes (2)

Blackout curtains in both bedrooms for sleeping in or taking an afternoon siesta

3” feather mattress toppers brought from US on both queen beds (Nicaraguan mattresses are not as thick as guests might be accustomed to at home, and luxury mattress toppers make a huge difference for a comfortable night's sleep)

Large, plush beach towels available for pool use, as well as thick, soft towels for bath use

2 bicycles provided for guests at no charge (bike locks also provided)

Real hot water from every tap (no electric shower head attachments) means safe access to hot water on demand in shower and all sinks

Additional water pressure pump for use when the rest of the city has only a trickle (especially common during morning hours)

Telescope with adjustable stand and multiple lenses for stargazing at night

8 ceiling fans to keep air moving throughout the house, keeping even the open air areas pleasant and breezy on hot days

2 oscillating floor fans (one in each bedroom) provide additional comfort

Full kitchen: all cooking utensils and plates / silverware / glassware, as well as regular toaster, toaster oven, espresso machine, regular coffee maker and filters, blender, microwave, full size 6 burner gas stove and oven, full size refrigerator and freezer with ice trays, tupperware, vegetable choppers, Pyrex dishes, pots and pans, cutting boards, knife set, strainers, cookie sheets, Ziploc bags, spices, wine openers, etc... Everything you could need to enjoy a night in and cook at home!

Wireless bluetooth speakers for listening to music

2 wireless printers for business travelers

3 flatscreen TVs (living area, downstairs bedroom, upstairs bedroom) so you can watch local channels or even a movie in bedrooms or from the pool

Claro cable package with 100+ channels on all 3 TVs (mainly in Spanish)

Roku with VPN on all 3 TVs with US Netflix, Hulu, Youtube and other streaming options. This uses a US Netflix account, so American and European movies and TV shows are accessible (mainly in English) by using Casa Romantica’s Netflix account

Surge protectors for safely charging electronics, which we recommend due to Nicaragua's occasional power outages and surges

High speed Wifi with 2 routers to ensure strong connection and signal (main router downstairs, second router upstairs)

5 gallon purified water tank provided (and refilled as needed) at no charge

Board games, playing cards, puzzles, dominoes, ping pong set, and other favorites provided for guest use in living room cabinet

Travel books and guides, local maps, photo books, brochures and coupons for area attractions available for guest use on sala bookshelf

Laundry (washing machine is provided, but no electric dryer - line and pins for drying are provided, or we will be happy to take to local laundromat for our guests)

Iron provided in bedroom closet

Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, shower gel) provided

2 real size (1875 watt) hairdryers, 1 curling iron, 1 Chi hair straightener

Extra security: 3 bright exterior lights and additional iron gate on front door for guests who want to open wooden doors for breeze or to see what's happening outside while feeling safe and secure inside (Note: the house is in a very safe neighborhood on the best street in Granada, but we have added these things to give first time visitors added peace of mind)

Luggage scales for weighing bags (always helpful after a shopping trip to the Masaya market!)

5 glass doors in downstairs sala open to allow for breeze throughout the house

Inflatable 24” queen mattress available (in addition to the 2 queen beds with real mattresses)

Garden area with hammock, 2 hammock chairs and real grass (please water if staying more than a few days and declining maid service)

Electronic security safe with customizable codes provided in master bedroom

Hangers are provided in master closet and dressers with ample drawer space are provided in both bedrooms

Pool floats and toys, beach towels, coozies, plastic plates and cups for use around pool are provided

Handheld cooler / ice chest for keeping drinks cold near pool or on excursions is provided for guest use

Emergency light (kitchen ceiling) automatically turns on in case of electricity outage at night. Flashlights are also provided.

Fire extinguisher, safety kit and first aid kit in house

Car seat (for cars) available in upstairs laundry closet

No additional electric fees will be charged to guests (please be respectful of this, as most other rentals do charge additional electric fees, and we’d like to keep from passing this on to guests)

In house cooking available upon request

Local cell phone provided upon request (local calls only please)

The very best thing about Casa Romantica is Julio Jaime! He is available 24/7 for guests, and can help with transportation, area recommendations, tours, emergencies, and anything else you might need! You'll see his name mentioned over and over again in the comments from previous guests, and while we are proud to offer all the things listed above, there is no doubt that having Julio as a dedicated full time guest concierge is what truly sets Casa Romantica apart!

All of this is on the best street in Granada, just one block from San Francisco Convent and in the most desirable residential neighborhood in town. Neighbors are often outside visiting in rocking chairs, which gives an additional layer of safety and friendliness to the area, and we ask guests to please be respectful to our wonderful neighbors.

For couples who do not require a second bedroom, the downstairs sala bed can be stowed away to provide a unique second living space / TV room with air conditioning.

We realize that some of these bullet points may seem standard to many travelers, but that is not always the case in Nicaragua. After personally renting almost 20 of the nicest homes and hotels in Granada, we were shocked by what was considered a “full kitchen” (hot plate and no utensils, oven or stove for $300 / night) or a “great night’s sleep” (extremely thin mattress on the floor) or a “private escape” (2 dogs in the house that were never disclosed). In other words, photos and descriptions can be deceiving, and we have done our very best to bridge those gaps and provide a truly honest and fantastic experience for guests at Casa Romantica. We think the reviews of Casa Romantica say it best, but these are important points to bring up anyway, so we encourage our guests to inquire with any hotel or home about anything specific that is important to you instead of just assuming anything before your trip.

**Please note that all colonial buildings (homes and hotels) in Nicaragua are predominantly open air, and minimal space is covered or enclosed. Casa Romantica's "open roof" is smaller than most, so only half of the pool is directly under the opening of the roof, but the main living space, pool area and kitchen are all "open air". Both bedrooms and bathrooms are completely enclosed. Please see photo section for detailed floor plan. This open air concept makes homes difficult to keep clean, especially in rainy season. While we have an exceptional maid at Casa Romantica, please keep in mind that open air homes in the tropics will not be as clean as enclosed spaces of North America or Europe (Please keep this in mind when staying elsewhere in Nicaragua as well; There is no way to keep all dust, bugs or noises out here... but that's part of what makes it a new experience)

Please see photo section for transportation rates

Guest access
You will have access to the entire home and all amenities, including both bedrooms, pool, kitchen, high speed Wifi, TVs and air conditioning, bicycles, etc (no shared spaces) and we will not enter the home for any reason during a guest's stay unless previously discussed.

Property manager (Julio) will meet you at the house with keys and show you around upon arrival.

Regular checkin is 3pm

Private covered parking garage with 24 hour security is located 2 blocks away and is $2 / night.

Julio worked as professional tour guide for 10+ years before coming to work as a full time property manager and guest concierge for Casa Romantica, and he is an excellent source of info for all things Granadino (speaks Spanish / English, is available 24/7, and is also available for private airport transfers, tours, activities, local recommendations, translations, or any other needs during your stay). Julio is also great with kids, and lives very near Casa Romantica with his wife and 4 sons, so he is a dependable guy and is available to guests any hour of the day or night, and can be as involved or as absent as guests wish.

Other things to note
Casa Romantica was featured on House Hunters International on January 5, 2018 (Season 116, Episode 10: "Grand Investment in Granada, Nicaragua")

We have updated with new furniture and a new roof, and visit the house every 2 - 3 months from US in order to replace / ensure the quality and availability of sheets, towels, bedding, games, books, etc

If you'd like to do laundry, please ask Julio for key to laundry closet and have him show you how to operate machine (different from those in North America and Europe). There is no additional charge for using washing machine, but we do ask that Julio shows guests how to work it first, as we have had well meaning guests flood the second floor trying to figure it out in the past.

Maid service and trash removal is available any time, but please let Julio know your preferred times / frequency, as some guests prefer daily interaction and some prefer none at all. We will never enter the home for any reason without permission during your stay, so please let us know your preferences for house cleaning / trash removal upon checkin.

Reference manuals are inside the home (3 provided) or call Julio directly for any concerns or immediate requests. Manuals include emergency contacts, local restaurant menus, and more.

Electric and water outages are common in Nicaragua, but if you should experience an outage lasting longer than 30 minutes, please call Julio directly. He has been known to get water running again at Casa Romantica several hours before the rest of the street or city had service restored, so he will be happy to help in case of prolonged outages if he can.

Nicaragua is a very Catholic country, and religious holidays are celebrated with great enthusiasm in Granada. It is common during these holidays to see bands and parades throughout town, and guests will also hear fireworks ("bombas") going off all over town at all hours. The noise can be startling if you're not expecting it or don't know what it is :) A list of dates for Nicaraguan holidays (2018) is provided in photos section of the listing.

Electricity costs are extremely high in Nicaragua (the highest in Central America) and the approximate cost per KWH is US $0.50. Please be conscientious about electricity usage and turn off all air conditioners, pool pump, fans, TVs and lights when not in use and especially when leaving the house. We strive to be environmentally conscious and to keep electricity usage included in the nightly price, rather than having guests pay a separate amount for electricity

The pool is NOT baby-safe. Please be watchful of babies and children around the pool area!

We do not recommend bringing rental cars to Granada, as they are often more hassle than they're worth and the city is easier to navigate on foot than by car. However, for guests who do bring cars we recommend parking overnight in a privately gated and covered garage (about 2 blocks west of the house, cost is $2 - $3 per night)

Best street in town! Calle Santa Lucia is close to the action, and still in the safe / walkable colonial district, but is one street away from the late night motos and 5am horse cloppings heard on busier streets. Just over one block from San Francisco Convent, in the most desirable neighborhood in Granada, on a great street with fantastic neighbors and 5 min walk to almost any tourist attraction or restaurant in town. Calle Santa Lucia is "the happiest street in Granada" according to taxi drivers, with residents and neighbors visiting outside on sidewalks or right out in the street well into the evening hours, every day of the week. You will often see rocking chairs pulled outside of each house so the neighbors can chat with each other and enjoy the breeze while watching their kids ride bikes and play soccer up and down Calle Santa Lucía, which gives a neighborly feel and also an added layer of security for guests at Casa Romantica. The house is about 1.5 blocks east of Hotel Corazon and right around the corner (east) from the intersection of Calle Miguel Cervantes and Calle Santa Lucía (sometimes called Calle Almendro on online maps)

I grew up in the rural South and decided to study abroad my junior year at the University of AR (before that was a “thing” and before the internet and smart phones connected us... in other words, I was throwing myself way out of my comfort zone, knew no one, didn’t speak the language, and was truly terrified). I’m still not sure why I did it, but I’m SO glad I did! That experience changed my life and my perception of the world completely, and I have spent the last 20 years trying to scratch the constant itch to experience new places and learn more about other countries and cultures. Almost 15 years of working with plastic surgeons in Dallas kept me distracted, but after falling in love with Nicaragua on a girls’ trip in 2014, I found myself returning time and time again. I purchased Casa Romantica in March 2016 after more than a year of searching for the perfect place, and I have met so many amazing people through the hosting experience! It was almost 20 years ago that I blindly took off to study in Granada, Spain, so finding my second home in Granada, Nicaragua, seems like a pretty perfect coincidence to me! I hope you will love Casa Romantica, Granada, and the people of Nicaragua as much as I do. It is an amazing and infectious place, and I hope you have a truly fantastic experience!
