Luminous. Warm. Beautiful ambience. Perfect for a family. Natural style with modern convenience. Glass-covered deck with seating for outdoor dining. Panoramic views. Great location in the heart of the historic center, above La Casa del Pan vegetarian restaurant (ground floor) and Ananda Yoga Center (2nd floor), close to everything. Quiet and private. 15% discount offered on breakfast in La Casa del Pan downstairs (from 8:00 a.m.).

The space

Sheltered behind a majestic house listed in San Cristobal’s Historic Registry, this rooftop apartment was built in 2016. It´s so peaceful and quiet it´s hard to believe you´re in the center of the city. Breathtaking original design by sculptor-arquitect Kees Grootenboer combines natural materials with energy-efficient appliances and modern comforts. Abundant windows and skylights welcome natural light and beautiful views; spacious interior invites you to relax or work peacefully with good wifi connection. Roomy corner sofa makes into a bed for two. Two attractive stuffed chairs let you read comfortably, with good light. Outdoor deck with view to the southern mountains is glass-covered, great for eating outside at sunset or using wifi outdoors.
We named this beautiful apartment after my beloved mother, Lavinia, who admired beauty and appreciated comfort.

Guest access

Entrance is through historic Spanish-style building housing a cultural center and the acclaimed vegetarian/vegan restaurant La Casa del Pan, founded in 1989. Spanish, meditation and yoga classes are available in the building. Documentaries and selected movies are shown most evenings downstairs. Live music in the restaurant on weekends does not interfere with the peace and quiet upstairs.

Interaction with guests

Your privacy is respected at all times in your quiet, secluded apartment in the sky. Other Airbnb guests may be occupying the nearby apartment, Casita Lin, which uses the same access. Attention is available during the daytime and evenings from your hosts and staff to answer questions about local attractions.

Other things to note

While the apartment is in the center of the historic center, it is a quiet rooftop retreat, a few steps away from live music, theater and cultural activity in the neighborhood. Restaurants, markets, travel agents, bookstores and shopping are nearby. The washer-dryer is energy-saving, super-quiet but requires 6 hours to finish its cycle of wash & dry. Please note this and plan ahead, if you want to wash your clothes. Also, it uses very little liquid detergent, which we supply, of an eco-friendly variety and 1/2-cup of which should be added directly on the clothes and not in the soap dispenser.
The hot water shower is energy-saving. Thank you for keeping your showers short, to save water and energy.
Your stay with us includes 2 Continental Breakfasts in La Casa del Pan restaurant downstairs, featuring organic coffee or herbal tea, fresh-squeezed orange juice, homemade bread, homemade jam and butter. You will appreciate our quality and the care we take to prepare everything fresh.

This has to be THE place to stay in SCDLC. The view are to die for- all around, even through the skylights. Fairly private despite being right in the center of town. There is another smaller, similar apartment next door, one below next to the Yoga studio, and of course they wonderful bakery/restaurant on the ground floor. The rooftop organic garden is on one side and you can watch them tending it. Another restaurant has rooms off to the left side, back a ways. The views of the mountains and the city are amazing, and at sunrise, stunning. The location is right in the middle of the action, so we would not call it "quiet" although there were no all-night revelries going on. This IS Mexico, and people here know how to enjoy life. There are several great coffee shops on both sides of the street just within this block, and the restaurant on the first floor of this building is fabulous. The salads made with veggies from the rooftop garden are as good as you will find anywhere. And a discount is provided. You are only about 2 blocks from the very center of town, and can walk anywhere in just a few minutes. The hot water situation others mention is an issue, but one learns to take very efficient showers. There is also a very energy and water efficient washer/dryer in the unit and it works great. No TV, but decent internet. Kitchen equiped, but with so many great restaurants so close, you won't really need it. Ground coffee and a French press were provided. If you want other fresh-roasted coffee to make yourself, go a few feet down the lovely pedestrian street. This is one of the best ABNBs we've ever stayed at. A slurge, but worth it.

This apartment is REALLY beautiful and looks just like the photos- or better. The location is as central as you could hope for. The apartment had great pots + pans for cooking and amazing coffee. The bed was SUPER comfortable. However, there were a few things we were not thrilled by. The listing mentions a shared entrance but not a shared balcony. It wouldn't really be an issue, except the table and chairs on the balcony were right outside our bedroom window. It felt a little invasive to have the people staying in the neighbouring apartment literally a few inches from our window. We had to keep the blinds shut but also felt a little bit like a lack of privacy. I don't blame the other guests for using the space, but I do wish the listing had been more clear. From the pictures I thought we would have use of the table and chairs on the deck but most days the other guests were using it. Also, the apartment has a LOT of windows, and none of the windows in the kitchen have curtains or blinds. There is a huge kitchen window overlooking a roof garden, and the host has tour groups come up to it. So if you are standing in the kitchen and a tour group comes by, it feels a little bit like you are on display. It would be nice if there were a curtain here! You definitely can't walk around in your underwear in the apartment :P Also, there is a skylight in the bedroom that has no curtain so it got very bright very early. I am not very sensitive to light while I sleep so I almost never travel with a sleep mask but in this case I wish I had because it was very difficult to sleep in the morning. Something else to keep in mind for families travelling together- the apartment does not feel like a true one-bedroom as the bedroom walls do not reach the ceiling, so there is little sound privacy between bedroom and living room. Also, the apartment is RIGHT in the center of town and there are dance classes held next door- sometimes dancing with the teacher shouting until nearly midnight. This is not the host's fault but since the listing said it was very quiet we were surprised by it. Mexico can of course be noisy (I live here and am accustomed to the Saturday night parties of my neighbours and constant barking dogs) but hearing a shouting dance teacher and blasting music until very late every weeknight felt annoying. The apartment is definitely beautiful but we were expecting more privacy. Overall I think we paid more than we should have given the general price of airbnb listings in San Cristobal. We had some problems with the hot water (it didn't work until the second last day of our 6 day stay there) and we felt as though the host didn't believe us until a...

Book now! This place is incredible and at the center of town. Katherine is generous enough to include a healthy and delicious free breakfast with your stay. Could not find a better place to stay in San Cris.

Beautiful space, airy, light-filled, and all the amenities for comfort and coziness. I would recommend this beautiful place for folks looking to be centrally located, yet in a somewhat secluded environment. The place was super secure and well located above an organic vegan restaurant. I enjoyed my eight nights and didn't want to leave! :)

The location of this beautiful apartment is couldn't be better. It is right in the middle of everything but is still private, and mostly shielded from the noise. The apartment is clean, simple, and has amazing views from every window. There is a yoga studio on the 2nd floor and a very tasty Vegetarian restaurant on the first floor. My only complaint is that showers have to be kept short because there isn't a lot of hot water. Otherwise, this apartment has everything you may want or need. I can't imagine staying anywhere else!

Response from Katharine:
The water has been in very short supply this year, owing to the absence of rain for 6 months! It has affected everyone. The hot water question is related to that. Meanwhile, we are looking into increased hot water options, while still conserving energy. Thank you for coming! Katharine

i have a vegetarian, artisan bakery-restaurant called La Casa del Pan Papalotl in San Cristobal de Las Casas with a rooftop garden. i love to garden, cook, play the flute, paint, swim and hike. La Casa del Pan is a wonderful place to eat, watch movies, practice yoga and meet people. We host volunteers when space is available. My husband Ron is an agro-ecological anthropologist who works with Mayan and mestizo farmers. We love living in Mexico and enjoy visiting France and England, as well as the wild areas of the US. We like daytime activities more than nightlife, visiting local farms and farmers´ markets, and are happy to recommend museums and restaurants in San Cristobal and nearby natural and cultural points of interest, as well as some of the history of this area.
