Visiting the Barrio del Carmen in Valencia is feeling the ancient history that still beats in the city. This neighborhood constitutes the heart of the old town, the one whose roots encompass Muslim and Christian cultures, the largest in Europe, the one that has known how to protect the vestiges of the past, but giving way to a modern and cosmopolitan present.
Walk through the interwoven cobblestone streets of the Barrio del Carmen, feel the culture they emanate, enjoy the leisure they offer and taste the gastronomy of the place…. It is a charming place, of magical contrasts and with its own essence.
It is the neighborhood with the most history, but overflowing with modernity. It is a place full of life, theaters, museums, restaurants, pubs... ideal for shopping, having a drink and dinner or enjoying a concert. Everything is possible in El Carmen.
Start walking through the narrow and unique streets of the Barrio del Carmen, located in the Ciutat Vella district. Step by step breathe its essence, lose yourself in its cultural diversity, among the tourists who visit it daily, among the young and old who live in its squares, corners and businesses.
Walk along Roteros Street and visit the busy Plaza El Carmen, there you will see the old El Carmen Convent, founded in the 13th century by the order of the Discalced Carmelites. This site represents the original nucleus of the neighborhood, because the town bearing the same name was founded around this convent.
Get to know the emblematic and imposing Torres de Serranos and Torres de Quart. They are the historical remains of that old wall that protected the region in medieval times, constituting its two important entrances. Its thick walls and Gothic facades will take you to 14th century Valencia.
You can see other ancient remains of the Barrio del Carmen in Valencia on Salinas Street. There is one of the last vestiges of the Arab wall that once separated Muslim Valencia from the suburbs that extended outside the city.
This wall reached one of the current limits of the neighborhood, Calle de Serranos, a current commercial street, which you should also know.
Visit the Valldigna Portal, one of the most emblematic sites in Valencia, built in the 16th century (Christian era) on the Islamic wall. Then enter the Church of San Nicolás de Bari and San Pedro Mártir, an exquisite work of architecture, fundamentally Gothic in style, whose walls and ceiling exhibit excellent pictorial art.
You can't stop walking in the Plaza del Arbol, a space that is hundreds of years old. From there you will admire the Casa INCA, an 18th century mansion, and the Celler, a historic site where wine was produced and stored.
The House of Rocks also awaits you, a building built in the 15th century that houses the Corpus Christi Museum, whose exhibition features figures of mythological beings, such as the Tarasca of Santa Marta or the Dragon of Saint George.
