Puerto Rico it’s graced by fabulous beaches, year-round sun and numerous opportunities for deep-sea fishing, diving and surfing, but there’s far more to Puerto Rico than suntans and snorkeling. Beyond the glitzy veneer of San Juan the coast remains incredibly raw and unspoiled, lined with miles of glittering white sands. Dig deeper and you’ll see the influence of the island’s rich stew of cultures – African, European and Taíno – in an exuberant array of festivals, tantalizing criollo food, gracious colonial towns, world-class rum and a dynamic musical tradition that gave birth to salsa.

The island’s mountainous interior is just as enticing, a land of torpid Spanish hill towns and gourmet coffee plantations. Ranches still raise Paso Fino horses, the finest in the Americas, and state forests preserve lush, jungle-covered peaks, fish-filled lakes and gurgling waterfalls. Yet it’s the juxtaposition of old and new, rather than a nostalgic throwback frozen in time, that makes Puerto Rico such a beguiling destination.

The island boasts an astounding diversity of landscapes, from the misty rain forests of El Yunque and the crumbling outcrops of karst country, to reef-encrusted desert islands and the withering dry forests of the southwest. And in several places, impenetrable mangrove swamps cradle one of nature’s most mind-boggling spectacles, the glowing waters of bio luminescent bays. Rent a car and it’s easy to escape the tourist areas, and you can zip between cool mountain forests and sun-bleached beaches in minutes. The island is remarkably safe, and though it can be tough for budget travelers, Puerto Rico compares favorably with other islands in the region.Puerto Rico it’s graced by fabulous beaches, year-round sun and numerous opportunities for deep-sea fishing, diving and surfing, but there’s far more to Puerto Rico than suntans and snorkeling. The neighbourhood

The inviting, turquoise waters of the San Juan strip of beach known as Ocean Park are located between the tourist hubs of Condado and Isla Verde. Although the San Juan coast features many beaches and beautiful sights, many visitors and locals alike still favor the area young people simply call “Ocean.” Its appeal is immediately evident: Ocean Park is a semi-secluded area in the otherwise busy capital, where beachgoers can enjoy both the active scene and the calmer waves while scanning the beautiful Atlantic horizon.

It is not just the sand that is golden here, the name also refers to the upscale – gated and guarded – residential community where most visitors park to access the beach. The area also offers lodging accommodations, including small boutique hotels, bed-and-breakfast inns, and private rentals. Many of these conveniently feature exquisite restaurants right on the beach. More casual establishments can be found along and near Calle McLeary.

Walking east on the beach towards Isla Verde, Ocean Park becomes more open, with easy public access from the Parque Barbosa. The park features some sports and recreation facilities. The beach in front of it is referred to as “El Último Trolley,” since it used to be the last stop in San Juan’s long-gone tram system. When the strong trade winds are in season, it’s not unusual to spot kiteboarding and windsurfing enthusiasts, especially at nearby Punta Las Marías. Sunsets at Ocean Park, however, are always in season.

Getting around

Ocean Park, along with its tiny neighbor to the east, Punta Las Marías, is one of my favorite spots in San Juan. Wedged between Condado in the west and Isla Verde in the east, this little residential pocket is home to a charming collection of guesthouses and inns, a great beach, and fun, casual places to eat and hang out. It's a little bit of the laid back California vibe in Puerto Rico. It's also a very popular destination for gay travelers to the island.

Other things to note

The gates never, never close for guest in cars to enter to the community at 6pm - 7pm. Just say to the security guards the address Calle Elena # 20 and they let you in. Addition to the main entrance that never close there are several small gates to enter and exit by foot open until 6-7pm. To view the internet TV content just press the triangle shaped button in the remote control.

My girlfriend and I loved our stay at Juan's place. The house is in a great location, it's a block from the beach and minutes walk to restaurants and cafes. The apartment is clean and equipped with everything you need. The bed is comfortable and aircon works great! There is plenty of hot water in the shower. Juan was a great host, he responded to our messages within minutes and when we had a problem with the fridge, he fixed this problem immediately. Would recommend to others! Thanks for a great stay.

This upstairs, 1 bedroom apartment is very spacious with a full kitchen and bathroom. Check in was super easy with use of a key box and the owner was very responsive via text. The washer and dryer on site came in very handy. The house has several other apartments available, which was great for housing family/friends who came for my wedding. It was great to all be in close proximity. Because we rented multiple units, Juan reduced The rate for my guests. The place was fairly clean with plenty of blankets. There are several restaurants in the area and Walgreens just around the corner. The house is approx a 15 walk to Condado or 15 drive to Old San Juan. I suggest visitors eat at Bebo's Cafe on Calls Loiza.
