Hussein Tarabeih, PhD, A native of Sakhnin is the executive director and founder of the Towns Association for Environmental Quality (TAEQ), the 1st Unit for Environmental Quality in the Arab Sector of Israel, established 1993. As the director of the regional organization Dr. Tarabeih is responsible for the major administrative and technical decisions of the TAEQ. Dr Tarabeih is working in collaboration with the mayors and staff of the six participating municipalities of the TAEQ and with the Israel Ministry of Environment Protection. He supervises TAEQ staff, oversees projects and budgets, and runs the day-to-day operations of the organization. Under Dr. Tarabeih's leadership, the TAEQ received the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation in 2012.
As a director, Hussein had initiated numerous environmental programs in the Beit Natufa area, including environmental education, regional planning, solid waste recycling and solutions for sewage treatment, energy conservation, green building and Arab-Jewish cooperation in the region.
In addition Dr. Tarabeih provides technical expertise on environmental planning, air pollution, environmental education, and other environmental matters in several projects of the TAEQ which are supported by the European Union, the Beracha Foundation, the Ministry of Education, and others. Hussein also participated as an Israeli member of the environmental - professional team in the multi-lateral Israel/Jordan peace negotiations in 1994.
Dr. Tarabeih had published numerous articles on environmental issues, co-existence, managing environmental conflicts, and the urbanization of Israel’s Arab sector; and lectured on these topics in international conferences. Hussein holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Haifa, a Master of Science degree in Environmental Studies from the Technion, Haifa Institute of Technology, and a PhD in Environmental Conflict Resolution in Divided Societies from the University of Haifa. Dr. Tarabeih is also an adjunct professor at the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution of George Mason University, in Virginia, USA. He has led workshops on Negotiation and Leadership at Harvard Law School's Program on Negotiation, as well as a Peace and Justice workshop at Tufts University. He is also the co-Founder of Moona- Space for Change Center, Inaugurated by the Administrator of NASA, Charles Bolden, and the delegates from NASA and the American Embassy at January 28 2013.
