The cottage-complex was originally built as a hostel, so all bedrooms were built to be separate from the living/dining area, all with their own separate entrances and keys.
Although it is not currently run as a hostel, having all of the bedrooms in cottages separate from the living area cottage allows those who want to socialize in the cottage with the living area and screened lanai to be able to, without disturbing those who want to relax or sleep in their cottage/room without being disturbed by those socializing at night or making breakfast in the morning~
Groups truly appreciate that their individual sleep schedules/needs can be met well under these circumstances! It is our most unique feature, and highly valued by our guests!
During its conversion into a vacation rental in 2011, along with Hawaiian décor touches, renovations made by us include: new flooring, new stove/oven/frig, new ceiling fans throughout, plus upgraded plumbing & electrical (all to building code and permitted), plus the addition of child safety lattice, and an also-permitted on-demand hot water system, (hot water never runs out!).
Additionally, our water filtration system is food grade with UV, including 2 pre-filters, the second catching anything as small as 0.5 microns– meaning we have water that's safe-to-drink and wash in!
The four cottages are all connected by decking & railings, forming a small courtyard in the center that serves as a meditation garden and peaceful sight when you exit your room each morning before gathering for breakfast! The outer sides of the cottages are flanked by lush tropical landscaping ~ including some fruit trees (yours for the picking when in season; orange, lime, grapefruit, avocados and breadfruit).
Another feature guests particularly enjoy: the property attracts many birds, which you will hear singing throughout the daytime; and hosts a night-time coqui-frog chorus to lull you to sleep! Coquis are very small nocturnal frogs that live in surrounding foliage, and are found throughout the Big Island. You may never see one (except via flashlight), but the males have a very sweet mating call at night~
Here is how the bedrooms/cottages are arranged (refer to photos):
Two bedrooms (with private entrances off the courtyard and uniquely-keyed doors) are located in their own cottage, along with one of the bathrooms. These are Da Slippahs Room, the largest bedroom, and the smallest bedroom (The Hula Room).
Da Slippah's Room has it's own private bathroom.
The Hula Room shares the other bathroom with guests staying in the other cottages.
The remaining 3 bedrooms are located across the little courtyard in their own cottage (again, all with private and uniquely-keyed entrances). They include: The Aloha Shirt Room, The Na Lei Room and The Flowers Room. None of these rooms connect to any other rooms.
Queen-sized sleeper sofa in living room.
Other options for sleeping arrangements have included renters choosing to either use one of the two twin air mattresses on the lanai or to have us prep one in the Aloha Shirt Room and/or in the Na Lei Room (sitting chairs are then moved into the 'open closets' to provide floor space for the mattresses.)
All mattresses include mattress pads.
For families with a baby or very small children, Da Slippahs Room can accommodate the Pack n Play type crib or one of our twin air mattresses.
Additionally, Da Slippah's Room has a connecting door to the Hula Room, which can be unlocked, to sleep 1 more on a twin pull out bed! Together, these two rooms make a nice 'suite' for a small family ~FOR BABIES: 'Pack and play' type crib with baby blanket, adjustable high-chair and baby bath tub.
There is a full shower-bathroom combo in a third adjoining building. That second bathroom is only steps away from the 3 bedroom cottage, along decking illuminated safely with calm nighttime lighting and in a locale private enough to not wake others!
The fully-equipped laundry room has an iron & board & spray with distilled water; plus soap/stain remover/dryer sheets.
All rooms have portable hamper.
Each room is stocked with 2 or more beach towels, tissues, plus paper and pen.
Ear plugs (for lighter sleepers) are to be found in living room~
Available for free use: boogie boards, beach chairs, coolers, binoculars.
Each of the bedrooms include a reading lamp, sitting area, radio and power surge protection outlet strip, to power up all your important personal electronics!
All guestroom key-rings include a key to the room, the guest house gate and one for the fourth attached building, which houses the kitchen, dining and relaxation areas ~ including a comfy family room, with its loveseat and queen-sized sleeper sofa, all right next to the adjoining screened lanai with wicker loveseat/coffee table and large patio table.
There are 2 eating areas; a dining room that seats 6, plus the very nearby screened lanai with its amply-sized patio table, providing additional seating for 4. The living room and lanai coffee tables can easily accommodate two more for groups of 11-12 that may want to have a meal at the same time. Additionally, for out-door food prep; there is a table in the nearby covered shed that can be pulled out for you for use next to the guest house's kettle BBQ~
We invite our guests to visit the Big Island Ohana Retreat with the intention of enjoying and respecting this sacred space as well having a fantastic time exploring the raw and majestic nature of the Island.
