Description

The space

-----IF YOU WANT THE ENTIRE BOAT, please book 'The "O"'------
The second berth and two singles in a wide beam barge on the River Thames, situated near historic sites, restaurants, shops and pubs. It offers extraordinary views. It has a beautifully finished light oak interior. My fiancee and I will also stay onboard with you. The second berth is suited for a couple, a single or up to three small children. The third and forth person can be accommodated on the two day beds in the common living area. The barge has an ample galley (kitchen) with a gas hob, oven and fridge. It also features an open floor-plan, an antique log burner, and a large wet-room, with shower, sink and toilet. The rooftop deck has outdoor furniture for al fresco dining.

Guest access

You will be sharing the space with us, but you will have access to the entire barge, except a small area that we use for storage and the main bedroom were we sleep.

Interaction with guests

Upon your arrival I will meet you and show you around the boat.
My fiancee, and I sleep in the main berth in the aft (back) portion of the "O". We will mostly be on the boat. We will be available to assist you by phone or text when we're not on the "O".
If you like, we can share meals with you. I will be happy to cook and clean, but we will need to split costs on victuals.
We love meeting people and sharing our home with them. Do please let us know if you just want some peace and quiet, we're perfectly fine with that too.

The neighbourhood

The River Thames provides spectacular views, historical sites, nearby shops and restaurants, friendly locals, wonderful walks, beautiful swans, ducks and geese and a wonderful perspective of nature. The boat provides access to nearby sights and activities, including Windsor Castle, Windsor Great Park, Legoland, Eton, Heathrow Airport, Saville Gardens, Runnymede and the Magna Carta Memorial, Hampton Court, Bray, Cliveden, Maidenhead, Marlowe, Henley-upon-Thames, Staines, Wentworth and Sunningdale Golf Courses, Ascot Racecourse, depending on where you want to moor.
Fishing is permitted on the Thames during the season. A Rod licence is needed to fish off the boat.

Getting around

If you are driving I will meet you and direct you to nearby parking. Often parking is free, but in places like Windsor there will be parking fees of between £8 and £10 per day, unless you don't mind a 10 minute walk to a free spot.
For your convenience the "O" can be moored very near Heathrow Airport. There are plenty of train stations to connect you to any destination in the UK, featuring frequent trains into London. Please see our guidebook for more details, or send us a text and we will be happy to assist you.
There are bus routes to certain locations. Taxis and Uber are available 24/7.
For your leisure, bicycles, small boats and kayaks are available for rent at most locations.

Other things to note

Airbnb doesn't allow me to move the barge with guests on board, but after you check-out, I can oftentimes take you out for a short jaunt on the river. You can even try steering the boat, (under supervision of course,) if you like. I would appreciate a 40 to offset the costs of fuel. This is only after you checkout and is not associated with Airbnb.
There is no smoking on or around the boat.
Presently, our fully functional porthole windows do not yet have a decorative trim finish on the inside.
While children will enjoy a great, fun time on the boat, please be aware, as with any river location, it requires extra vigilance from parents of young children, or non-swimmers.
For people over 6 foot 1 inch, please note that the ceiling height on the boat is 6 foot 2 inches. Also the bed in the second berth is really suited for people 6 foot 1 and under. We do have a longer one in the living room, a single, which would be more suitable for one tall person.
We provide light breakfast supplies, cereal, jam, bread, butter, milk, coffee and tea.
We have environmentally friendly bathroom products for your use, shower gel, shampoo etc.
We run the boat's electrical system off of 12V batteries and an inverter. Therefore, appliances over 350W will not work. These include hairdryers, curling tongs, toasters and irons. We do have a petrol generator that is rated at 2000W and can run most small appliances of up to 1500W. There is an additional £10 charge for using the generator.
We do not have a washing machine. We can provide information as to the nearest launderette or dry cleaner.
Try to feed the swans healthy food. They absolutely love bread and it's bad for them.
Unfortunately, the boat is not wheelchair accessible.

House Rules
No smoking
Check in time is flexible

-----No smoking allowed on or within 50 feet (15 Metres) of the boat-----
Parties permitted, but please check with me before planning one, as on certain moorings we need to be respectful of noise levels for our neighbours in the surrounding boats and houses.
Please try to feed the swans healthy food! They absolutely adore bread, but it is unhealthy for them.
On very rare occasions I may need to move the boat to fill up the water tank. This takes about two hours. Should this be necessary, I will coordinate with you to make sure it is at a time that is convenient for you.

Really brilliant stay aboard the Onion. I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone as a cheaper and quirky way to stay on the Thames. The mooring in Windsor was brilliant- the closest the Thames gets to Windsor Castle (2 min walk). You should know that the 'second birth' option probably isn't so great if you're looking for high levels of privacy as the hosts stay on the boat so you share living space (don't worry, they're very nice and incredibly accommodating).

Five star experience on board of the 'O'! We were in Windsor for the night because of a wedding. Bobby made sure the boat was moored so close to the venue, that we could basically roll straight into the berth afterwards. Bobby and Helena are lovely hosts and it was a pleasure staying with them. The boat is spacious and clean. The next day we went on the 'O' to Maidenhead, which was a beautiful trip on the Thames and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I stayed on the "Onion" with my two children, 5 and 4 years old, where Bobby and his fiancée Helena hosted our stay for 3 nights. It has been an amazing stay - the Onion was lovely and comfortable while Bobby and Helena were amazing hosts. Bobby met us at the train station upon arrival and helped us with our luggage. He was very kind and helpful throughout our stay. I also learned a lot about living on houseboats from him. The Onion is simply beautiful. Very nicely renovated and looked after with all our necessities. We woke up to amazing view of the river and wildlife every morning. I particularly enjoyed sitting on the decking at the front of the boat for tea/a light meal, simply absorbing the nature in sight and truly relaxing. Kids absolutely love their bed (the double bed that's enclosed on 3 sides on a higher level) - it's like a secret den for them! With no TV and other electronics (I left our tablet at home!), my kids engaged in more imaginative play and paid more attention to the nature. In fact, I had to "drag" them out the first day, they just had too much fun on the boat. Would highly recommend staying at the Onion! Will definitely try to visit Bobby and Helena again! Thank you very much for such a lovely stay and experience!

Bobby came out to meet us close to where the boat was moored and showed us where we can park for free (extra perk!) and walked with us to the boat. We were offered coffee/tea and showen around the barge which is lovely!

I am very happy to be an Airbnb Superhost. My fiancee and I enjoy hosting; readying the boat and choosing the proper mooring for your trip, greeting you and your guests. We love meeting people from all over the world and sharing conversations and life stories. Many of our guests plan to return and we are honoured that some have become our friends.
Our intentions are to ensure you have a magical stay on our barge on the River Thames. The river is beautiful, awesome, peaceful and ever changing. A ribbon of beauty winding through the English countryside. We are easy going and available to you at all times. We are more than happy to provide additional local knowledge to support your travels to and around England.
I am currently in sales. Previously, I was a pilot flying both military and commercial aircraft. I enjoy golf, hiking, fishing, camping, singing, dancing and stargazing. My fiancee is in the arts. She enjoys theatre, literature, golf and tea.
We are thankful for the opportunity to live on the river. You support this dream by sharing it with us. Thank you for your bookings.
