We had a great time here. Mel is super helpful and we loved our casita. Perfect for what we were looking for.

Mel was fantastic, a relatively quick trip, Mel was very communicative and issues or questions was settles as quickly as possible. The hostel property was clean, quite, quaint. The backpackers were very nice all greeted you once you were on the property. The property is a short walk to the main road and with a taxi ride you can go virtually anywhere on the island. All in all it was a great time. Hot Water: We had it, but it came and went in our unit. Didn't bother us thought the CW was room temperature and was fine for showering. Make sure to bring bug spray. Mel's property is not immune to misquotes. However you have mesh screen on the door to keep the out. Lastly when in doubt , ask MEL if your bored on the island (which is hard, as there is so many activities on the island) likely she will know about different events and restaurants on the island.

Mel was a fab host. The Casita that we stayed in is just one of the accommodations available at her place and I would strongly suggest that you also see what else is on offer. The hostel is friendly and well equipped and the self contained rooms/flats/containers are really well designed. There's a lovely pool and plenty of hammocks to chill out on. I particularly enjoyed eating breakfast on the balcony with some friendly lizards for company. Mel was great at making suggestions and giving advice on where to go and what to do. The area is quite quiet, the beach is less than 5 mins walk and if you want to go diving then Octopus Dive centre (10-15 mins walk) is brilliant. If you want a cheap dinner, wander over to the kiosk the other side of the park and pick up a baleada for Lps10.

Great value! Quiet, moderately clean. There is only a cold water shower so if that's a problem for you, this isn't your place. We didn't meet Mel but Emma was absolutely delightful!

Response from Mel:
Thanks for the review, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. There is hot water in the casita- it's the right-hand tap in the shower. Maybe you didn't wait long enough? It's a bit far from the hot water heater (it's a solar hot water heater, which is on the roof of our house- on cloudy days, sometimes it's not too hot, but most of the time it's great). A few of our rentals don't have hot water (the loft rooms, private room with private bathroom, and 2-bed dorm), but the rest all do

Mel and her staff were very accommodating and always around when needed! Location was great just a quick taxi ride to west end. Very clean and perfect for just two of us but also had room for 4 people if needed. Would stay here again in a heart beat!

The hostel is a fun place to stay with lovely grounds and pool area to escape the heat of the day. The casita did need some sprucing up and Mel said she was doing that after I left. It's a good location and very secure as someone is always there. I met nice people there including Mel and her family and friends. Overall, a good experience.

I didn't meet Mel as she was on holidays during our stay in Roatan, which lasted one unforgettable week. Cecilia, in charge of running the property, was always there for us with positive attitude, professionalism, sympathy, efficiency and effectiveness, always looking for the best solutions for us. We stayed at la Casita, a dependent separate house, that looks as in the pictures. We liked it in there, though some major renovations are due to the shower and to the bathroom. The property consists of a house with many rooms, run as a backpacker community - an interesting solution, combining a homestay with a hostel. Beware of it, and decide whether this kind of environment is what you search for. For us, it was a great solution although not foreseen initially. Some rooms of the main building are lovely, though again I suggest considering investing in renovations, especially to showers, bathrooms and mosquito nets (btw, no mosquitos at night in the rooms! Wow). The property is located a bit out of West End, that can be reached by minibus (there are zillions) until 17.30 for 17 lempiras or by taxi for 50 lempiras (we paid that price also by night, no matter what you read: just stay firm on prices). The closest dive shop is at walking distance, but you don't really want to walk 1.4 km each day back and forth after diving, you'll consider taking the bus nonetheless. In short, we loved our stay, and Cecilia made it very special.

Response from Mel:
Sorry I didn't give you a heads-up that I'd be away- it was a kind of crazy month, and it worked out to take a bus trip to Guatemala, so we left the day before you arrived, so it's too bad we didn't get the chance to meet you, but glad you had a good time with Cecilia. I usually say the dive shop's about a 15 min walk away- if I told you 10 min, I might have made a typo. I do lots of maintenance every year (this year, we tiled all around the pool deck, tiled/screened the lower porch, added more counter space to the communal kitchen, added the little bedroom to the casita, repainted several of the rooms and exteriors), but there's always more to do. The casita bedroom will be repainted at the end of this month, and our house will have the dining room and living room repainted soon. Please let me know what areas you noticed need work, so I can make sure to add them to the list (I've changed out the shower in the casita, but still has problems with dripping, so I'll be changing it out again). I haven't bothered with mosquito nets as the windows are screened, so usually not an issue, but did you think that they were needed? I really love detailed feedback so that I can improve, so please share whatever comments you have. Mel

I am a single mom of 2, living on site at our small, friendly hostel in a residential area in Sandy Bay on the island of Roatan. I traveled around for several years as a scuba instructor before making my home in Roatan. We're just a few minutes walk to the dolphins at Anthony's Key, as well as the botanical gardens. We love to travel, so if we've gone on a trip while you're coming to stay with us, we'll make sure to leave you in good hands.
