Guest access
Guests have access to their rooms, the living room, the kitchen dining room and the wonderful wooden terrace.

Guests are invited to explore the orchard garden and pick their own fruit when in season. We have apples, pears, plums, cherries and blueberries.

As the house is located on top of the hill separating the village of Cupseni from the valley village of Costeni and the garden extends over the village road, guests can enjoy a breathtaking view of Satra mountain and Costeni village. Picnic table & campfire is provided here.

Explore this extended garden with its birches and mini forest overlooking the village of Costeni.

In summer, take your lunch in the extended garden with a view of Costeni Village and in the evenings light a campfire under the stars; help yourself to wood stacked against the barn & ask Viorica for the wheelbarrow (roaba) from the barn to transport it.

Other things to note
We run Casa Carolina on strong ecological principles and we love the DRY TOILETS in this part of the world.

We encourage all our guests to experience the dry toilet, the most ecological toilet in the world.
Casa Carolina's DRY TOILET is located at the end of the barn.

Cupşeni , Maramures, Romania

You'll wake up to the sound of birds and horse drawn carts. The views of Satra, Tibles and Hudin Mountains will make you feel free and on top of the world.

You'll hear the woodpecker search for insects high in the trees and the buzzing of wild bees looking for pollen.

Over breakfast on the wonderful terrace, watch villagers go scything or hay stack making and say hello as they go past.

Have lunch on the shaded terrace with views of Satra Mountain & watch the children play on the trampoline

Over dinner under on the terrace or the old apple tree watch villagers bring hay for their farm animals or winter wood for their stoves.

Did you know that 1 horse can eat 6 cartloads of hay in 6 months of winter? Multiply that by 4 - 5 farm animals for each micro farm and you need a lot of hay over winter.

Cupseni, Costeni, Ungureni & Libotin Villages make up the commune of Cupseni nestled in the valleys at the foot of Satra Mountain. This area is known as Tara Lapusului ( Lapus Country), one of four sub regions of Maramures. In Maramures you can still see a self sufficient way of life long lost elsewhere. A few traditional wooden houses with mud floor remain. Traditions and religious festivals are still observed with people wearing traditional folk costumes with pride to church on Sundays, village dances at Christmas & Easter, Iia (Romanian Blouse) Festivals on 24 June & other local & regional festivals.

Hi, I am Silvia. I was born in Targu Lapus, Maramures and I grew up in Timisoara, Romania. Fate took me to London where I went to university and I met my Belgian husband. I now have a family and live in London but I love returning to Romania to reconnect with my roots, a simpler way of life and the wonderful colourful traditions of Maramureș. The nature and the wide open spaces are always refreshing and somehow the food tastes better. Please allow me to introduce you to the magical world of northern Transylvania and Maramures. As a traveller I like things that are authentic and tell the story of the place, something special and unique.. I love to sample local cuisines and I have eaten in India, Australia, US and of course the many cuisines London has on offer. I look forward to hosting you! Sylvia
