Description

This authentic straw bale home affords privacy and gorgeous views of the mountains. As guests, you will be the only people on these beautiful 20 acres of true wild west. Get away for the weekend, work remotely or do some serious reading and relaxing.

Straw bale house, in the high desert at the foot of the Dragoon Mountains. Two bedrooms in quirky, art-filled, comfortable house, 75 miles from Tucson. Perfect base for hiking, birding, star-gazing, exploring, or just plain snoozing in the hammock.

This is a spacious, open, straw-bale/adobe house with two bedrooms, a full bath, living room and dining area, and kitchen. It's in a dramatically beautiful, somewhat remote location, at the foot of the dramatically beautiful Dragoon mountains.
The house is in a large (20 acre) lot filled with mesquite and other high desert flora. The house's walls are adobe-covered, stacked straw bales, a traditional local building method that provides excellent insulation in summer and winter.
There is internet access but no TV; a stay in this house is probably most attractive to people who enjoy reading, writing, hiking, rock-climbing, bird-watching, and gazing at spectacular sunsets behind the Dragoons - in short, the more unplugged activities!
The house is simply furnished and decorated with cool, unique knick-knacks and art. There's a decent kitchen with gas stove, coffee-maker and toaster oven, a washing machine, bathtub with shower, and an outdated entertainment system, including a Playstation 1 that (usually!) plays dvds. There's a nice stereo, and no neighbors close enough to judge or complain about the volume.
An hour-and-a-half from Tucson, the house is a
20-minute drive to the nearest gas station, family-dollar store, bar, and produce market, all in the small town of Sun Sites, and is about 30 minutes from the slightly more populated Willcox.
Nearby attractions include Cochise Stronghold in the Dragoons, where the Apache Chief Cochise held off the US Army for years in the nearby Coronado National Forest (which offers hiking, camping, and rock-climbing), the Kartchner Caverns (an enormous, beautiful, recently discovered cave - highly recommended), the old mining towns of Tombstone and Bisbee, other ghost towns, The Amerindian Foundation's Museum and Gallery, and the Chiracahua Mountains.

Guests have access to the house and the surrounding property, but not the adjacent shop or shed.

The owners are not present, but a nearby neighbor is available.

A stay in this house is best-suited for those who enjoy the out-of-doors (the weather is typical of the high desert) and the peace and quiet of this very rural location.

A car is a must, and it's a great area for biking. Or you could bring your horse.

You will have access to the entire house. The studio-workshop is off-limits with rare exceptions.

We'll be texting and emailing, as I manage the property from many miles away. We have neighbors and cleaners we keep horses on site, look in on the place and sometimes keep horses there. You'll be alone, but with neighbors nearby to help out if need be!

Although this house is located in a beautiful, quiet location with great access to hiking in the Dragoon Mountains, it was very dirty and and major appliances were not working. If the owners could clean it up it would be a great place to stay.

This was a lovely home in a wonderful location. The home was so inviting and it was great to be able to bring my dog. Tony left very thorough directions and communicated in a prompt manner. This house is such a gem!

Stayed in cochise for about 1.5 months for an internship down the road. The place was absolutely perfect while in a beautiful location. An ideal place to just 'get away from life' for a bit. Loved and enjoyed my stay.

We just spent 3 months here and felt as "at home" as you can without actually being at home. We were there for cold and warm weather and the house remains temperate. We were so intrigued, we helped build a straw bale home in the Stronghold while there. The back porch is "the gem" in my opinion. We spent the majority of warm days out there. I would not hesitate to recommend this home!

I'm a music producer, teacher and musician living in, and originally from Chicago. While I don't get to travel very much, I get out to a place my brother and I own in Cochise, AZ. This place is available for short and long-term rental, and is a great getaway from city life.... or anywhere. With a beautiful view of the Dragoon mountains from the house, and 20 acres to stretch out on, it's a unique and serene place to spend time.
