About this listing

At an altitude of 395m within a protected (“NATURA 2000”) royal oak forest, a 100+ year old renovated traditional stone cycladic farmhouse offers the best of two worlds: architectural tradition and relaxation in the farm.

The space

Feel cozy and inspired as soon as you enter the "kathikia" (as a farmhouse is stated in Kea); the "stegadi" (long room open at one end) introduces you to the interior were walls are corbelled inwards and are topped by a series of slabs which form the ceilings; the cement mortar floor, the joint stone walls, the wooden furniture, doors & windows. Everything designed in a quest to reveal the beauty of craftmanship, simplicity and practicality.

Special mention to the architect Ioannis Exarchou and photographer Sylvia Diamantopoulou for the internal photos!

Guest access

The old threshing floor is in the highest spot of the plot overseeing the closer inner island mountain ranges. A rainfed vegetable garden is cultivated so that when growth is achieved traditional varieties of Greek fruits and vegetables can be tasted, occasionally by obtrusive 4 legged trespassers. The olive trees, maple, almond and wild pear trees, a wild fig tree, a lemon verbena, greek herbs (oregano, thyme, marjoram), shrubbery and thistle are your silent green neighbours in need of human alliance:

The area is often visited by wily goats, gluttonous sheep and jumpy rabbits. Luckily for them we are pro-wool and the occasional sheep bell rings nicely to our ears.

Depending on the season various birds fly upon us: falcons, bee-eaters, goldfinches, woodpeckers, robins and if you are lucky enough 2 pairs of eagles. All in all, what you see and hear is entirely welcomed, not much can be done other than birdwatching if things get edgy…It is their territory and a good chance to make feathery friends.

Interaction with guests

As soon as you arrive at Kea's port we will meet and help you out for your relaxing vacations in the farmhouse and the island. Other than that I will be available for contact at any time of the day via telephone, e-mail & sms.

I will be happy to offer any help and suggestions to make your vacation as good as possible!

If you feel like letting me know what you enjoy most in your vacation, I will come up with some good ideas and information.

Other things to note

A table under the olive tree with a wicker pendant lamp offers a unique experience during the night...

If you prefer something even more relaxing a hammock is waiting for you...

If you enjoy milky ways and the starry sky bring your telescope. A deeply invigorating experience as the dome above and around you is all yours to explore, zero light pollution guaranteed!

And for the light of the day binoculars to observe cycladic islands lying in front of you, falcons on top or beneath you or even the odd sailing boat cruising nonchalantly towards...

Welcome! Enjoy your vacation and the house, please treat the house as if it was yours…

The gas bottle is situated externally. Open the valve slowly for uninterrupted burning of the double stoves in the kitchen.

CAUTION : When not in use (i.e. during the night or when falling to sleep) or if windows are kept shut make sure that you safely turn off the valve of the external gas bottle as well as the double stove LPG burner in the kitchen.

When cooking attend the burners frequently as in some cases the flame might put out (wind from the window, low pressure, etc.). Close the valve from the burner, slowly reopen and light it up, always with caution.

Do not smoke in the kitchen or in the house.

The water is very clean but do not drink it! It comes from a water tank and it is collected when it rains. Old cycladic houses had no other option other than this and we try to keep it as such.

When using it in the kitchen or the bathrooms please remember it is a scarce resource in the island. Do not spend it, it is precious…

Also please do not throw paper in the toilet.

If you smoke in the veranda or around the house/croft please be very careful, especially when it is windy as trees, bushes, etc. are extremely flammable.

As you arrive back in the night remember to carry a torch with you, you might need it.

You can leave the external light(s) switched on during the night if you wish, please remember to switch them off in the morning.

If you wish to have a warm/hot bath it takes about 20’ for the heater to build up temperature. The fuse box is by the entrance door and the fuse is the last up & right.

Remember to switch it off before anyone has a shower and when not in need.

Remember to leave a little bit of space between items and internal back wall so that air circulates efficiently and does not freeze in the compartment.

7. Wi-fi

Wi-fi is not standard, this is the place for internet vacation too... If you really need it, it can be offered as a 3G pocket Wi-fi at an extra fee of e.g. €20/15 days/3 GB.

Pocket wifi should be placed outside of the house for better signal. It does not always get 3G signal, but in general it is ok.

Please take good care of the pocket wifi, use it only in the house and leave it inside the house when not in use.

In case of damage or loss the charge is €50.

As this is a farmhouse please keep the doors closed at all times; for some reason it may be attractive to various tiny friends...

The main dustbin is used for non recyclable garbage, food, etc. Please use a secondary trash bag for recyclable items (glass, plastic, aluminum items, etc.) as there is no separation at first point.

As there are no public dustbins outside of the house please take care and throw them accordingly as you drive further down the asphalt road. The blue ones are for recycling.

George User Profile

My name is George Chatzigiannakis and I live in Athens with my wife and 2 children. Sharing good food, a good bottle of wine and relaxing music with a nice company is the epitome of living well. I also enjoy reading, cultivating the vegetable garden and I am an amateur beekeeper (with no great success up to date...). Finally I hike for no reason at all!

Having travelled most of the Greek inland and the islands I was always overwhelmed by traditional farmhouses and their local architecture; all were wisely built and had a distinct personality. Having spent many years trying to find a farmhouse that makes you feel content this was the one...Old stone settlement within a croft, with imposing view to the Aegean and to the open sky, away from civilization but with all the necessary comforts, in complete assimilation with the elements of mother nature...
