A lovely fully equipped modern cottage in a rural setting on the beautiful Kaipara Harbour only 90 mins north of Auckland. Peace and quiet, cosy. Lounge on the decks, soak in the bath, stoke the fire or explore further afield

The space
The 'Nikau Nest' is a beautiful, architecturally designed, stand-alone cottage on our 6 hectare lifestyle block on the Kaipara Harbour, 10 minutes west of Kaiwaka (The Little Town of Lights). Surrounded by bush and gardens and with views out to the Takahoa inlet and the rural countryside it is the perfect place to relax and unwind or use as a base to explore surrounding areas of Northland.
It is many things:
A private secluded ‘getaway’ spot only 90 minutes north of Auckland. Relax in the peace and quiet of rural, coastal northland; ideal spot to unwind or even for a romantic getaway.
A base to explore this beautiful part of Northland - visit the east coast beaches and Mangawhai or west, to experience the culture and history of the Kaipara district including Matakohe Kauri museum, West Coast beaches and the Kauri forests
A place to soak up the atmosphere of the Kaipara harbour and maybe catch some fish. Bring your boat or kayaks and launch at the all tide boat ramp 5 minutes away
A stopping off point for your journey north or south.
Cool in the summer and wonderfully warm in winter with the wood burner it is equipped with everything you need to allow you to be self-sufficient during your stay, including:
Well equipped separate kitchen - gas hob, fridge, dishwasher, microwave/grill, Nespresso machine. Tea, coffee, salt and pepper.
Two decks - Your own BBQ, table and chairs and outdoor seating
TV (Freeview), WiFi is available but currently only from the front deck, Stereo, DVD/BlueRay player.
Separate bathroom with shower or enjoy a soak in the free standing bath which has great views over the countryside.
Use of our swimming pool to cool off (at main house).

You are welcome to wander around our property and enjoy the scenery, bush walks, the animals and bird life. Peacocks wander the property. The native bird life is bountiful. We have sheep so please leave gates as you find them.

Where you’ll be

Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand

We are situated 10 km from Kaiwaka along the Oneriri Peninsula on the edge of the Kaipara Harbour.
Kaiwaka, on the main highway north, provides your base for supplies - small supermarket, service station, cafes, the Three Furlongs Bar and Grill (does a great fresh seafood meal on a Friday night), Indian restaurant, liquor shop, Italian bakery, The Kaiwaka Cheese Shop (which stocks a wide range of cheeses from New Zealand, Holland, France and Switzerland as well as organics and specialty foods).....
The Kaipara Harbour is reputedly the largest harbour in the southern hemisphere. It is the largest nursery for juvenile snapper on the west coast. Take the opportunity to explore its coastline and its history.
30 minutes to the east coast beaches (Mangawhai Heads, Te Arai, Pakiri). At Mangawhai; cafes, the Saturday market, Bennetts chocolate factory, golf course, the museum and art gallery are some of the options to investigate. Further afield are the lovely settlements of Waipu and Matakana.
Travel west to Matakohe and the Kauri Museum. Wander the west coast beaches (especially wonderful in stormy weather) as a contrast to the east coast. Travel north from Dargaville to see the Waipoua and Trounson Kauri forests and Kai Iwi lakes.
Travel north to Whangarei and on to the Bay of Islands.

We have been retired to our lifestyle block for the last two years and are enjoying the rural life after many years working and living in the city. Gardening, a variety of projects and a bit of fishing are keeping us busy. We were both brought up in Northland and can help with ideas on travels in the region. We look forward to sharing the property with our visitors and are sure you will enjoy what it and the district have to offer.
