The secluded stone cottage is set amongst lovely garden on a secure 33-acre property overlooking the beautiful Loldaiga Hills, with a backdrop of Mt Kenya.

The property lies 6km off the main road on the outskirts of Timau, about 22km from Nanyuki.

The space

There are safe walks around the property which has a rich variety of plants and bird life, with beds of unusual aloes and succulents blending into the natural landscape and descending towards the Timau river.

Guests are welcome to use the stunning barbecue area in the main gardens which has comfortable seating for sundowners and outdoor dining. The cottage has one double and one twin bedroom, both with en-suite bathrooms, a well equipped open plan kitchen and spacious sitting and dining area, and a sheltered verandah with lovely views of the gardens and hills beyond.

Guest access

Guests are welcome to roam the 33-acre property with the exception of the main house.

Guests are welcome to use the wifi which is available in the main house on request.

Interaction with guests

The friendly staff will be on hand to look after you, wash dishes, make beds and clean the cottage. I will be available from time to time due to business travel so am not always on site. However, if I am there then I am very happy to help out with your stay.

Visitors will receive a friendly welcome from the resident dogs, and Mr Wiggs, the Sokoke cat, along with horses, cows, chickens, a goat and a donkey to be petted and fed.

Ruth's cottage is a little slice of heaven..serene, quiet and very beautiful. The cottage is also designed really well. Her menagerie really adds character to the place..especially her (URL HIDDEN) son and nephew really enjoyed them. Her staff are helpful, polite and quite resourceful. We really enjoyed the downtime and will be back

Excellent place and great value! Great secluded and peaceful spot which is just a few hours drive from Nairobi. You'll need a 4x4 or sturdy vehicle to navigate the 6-7km track to the cottage from the main road, but otherwise the Nairobi-Nanyuki-Timau road is as good as they get in Kenya. Ruth's staff were on hand for a warm welcome and were extremely helpful. The cottage is immaculate and has a beautiful view of the Laikipia hills to the north. Landscaped garden is stunning, and pets (5 dogs, a cat and a goat) were very friendly. Cottage only recently built but has lots of charm. Lots of open space and light, fully equipped kitchen and very comfy beds. No mosquitos either at 2000m altitude. We used the cottage as a base to explore the local area -- including the Ngare Ndare forest and the Sirimon track of Mt. Kenya, both of which are very short drives away. It was also a very short drive from Samburu Reserve to the north (the road to the north is excellent). Only minor downside: communications. Cell coverage was OK with Safaricom, poor/non-existant with Airtel, and there was no wifi connection in the cottage. Managed to get calls and decent enough data connections through the mobile phone though, so not an issue. Overall we had a very relaxing few days' stay and would certainly return! It's a great base for exploring the area or just getting some peace and quiet.

We so enjoyed staying at Cedar Cottage. The location is absolute breath taking. We had breakfast with the menagerie of pets, including horses, while watching a family of elephants graze on the mountainside. We weren't able to meet Ruth but her staff was attentive and kept checking on us. The cottage was so peaceful and calm. We certainly hope to return. The only drawback is the long rocky road to get to the cottage. It certainly would be much easier in a 4 wheel drive vehicle but was a bit challenging in our small sedan but once you arrived it was certainly worth the trip!
