The neighbourhood

The neighborhood of Bayou St. John is historic and quaint, one of the oldest in New Orleans, which might not exist without its namesake bayou. In the early 1700s when Bienville was looking for the best site for a city on the Mississippi River, he found a nice bit of high ground on a strategically located crescent in the river. But critically, the area also had a back door - a short portage to a bayou that allowed easy access to Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf of Mexico beyond. This was Bayou St. John, and thus New Orleans was founded in 1718 on the high ground by the river.

It wasn't long before bustling shipping and a neighborhood sprang up around the head of the bayou. The old portage to town became Bayou Road, and in time Esplanade Avenue took over the route and the rest of New Orleans grew up around the Vieux Carre (French Quarter) and Bayou St. John.

Today, the area is classic New Orleans, with diverse architecture and natural attractions yet a lively and friendly neighborhood vibe.

The apartment is just a block from the cluster of restaurants and amenities including Liuzza's by the Track, Fair Grinds Coffeehouse, Cafe Degas, Lola's, Canseco's market, Fortier Park, and more (see my Guidebook for more info).

Just up Esplanade is City Park, which aside from great natural spaces includes the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), Storyland, the Botanical Gardens, and Morning Call coffee shop.

The French Quarter is 1.5 miles down Esplanade, and the Marigny, Treme, Bywater, and CBD are all relatively close and easy to get to. Likewise, as Bayou St. John is a part of Mid-City, Uptown is a straight shot out Broad St. or Carrollton Avenue.

The apartment is perfectly located for Jazzfest, just two blocks from the entrance and right in the middle of the fun and festiveness that fills the area every spring. Other fun nearby events include Bayou Boogaloo in May and Voodoo Fest on Halloween weekend.

And of course, the bayou is still the heart of the neighborhood, a great place to stroll, exercise, kayak, enjoy a sunset, or live out your fantasies of being an 18th century sailor.

Getting around

Easy access by road from any direction. Ample street parking. We're right off Esplanade Avenue, with a bus stop nearby and streetcar stop just up Esplanade at City Park.

The home is exactly as described. John lives next door, he's a very pleasant young man. We were there during Jazz Fest and John thought ahead to save us a parking space on the street. The beds are full size and very comfortable. There are restaurants, a grocery store, a wine bar, and coffee shops all within a short walk.

This was a great place to stay. Very clean, beds are comfy, location is absolutely GREAT! The neighborhood is safe. There are few great places to eat just right down the road from John's house. You can really feel at home here. As a suggestion, to get around from this house use Uber or drive yourself if you are familiar with your surroundings. Do not use a cab if possible. When we HAD to use a cab one night it was double the price of the Uber. (We had to use a cab because of road closures from the festival)

Convenient short drive to the French quarter. Charming historic shot gun house. We enjoyed the bare wood floors and the bed with the cute duvet cover.

This home is located in a great neighborhood. Our family thoroughly enjoyed walking to restaurants. It's an easy drive or Uber into the city. The home was clean and well furnished. We would not hesitate to stay here again. John was a good host and touched base to make sure we had what we needed. A helpful hint, We booked our sightseeing tours through Viator and saved money.

Great stay at John's home! Cute and basic set up that was perfect for our needs! My friends and I stayed at John's place for our spring break trip to NOLA and I'd recommend his charming place to anybody! Close to a cemetery if you want to check one of those out, lots of food in walking distance as well. We got to walking around the neighborhood to check out all the homes and it was worth it! Be careful with the bathroom sink, jewelry will be lost if you aren't careful with the open drain. John provided clean linens and dishes to use during our stay. The lock system is brilliant and definitely much easier than dealing with keys! Thanks for the stay, John!
