Where you’ll be

Minturn, Colorado, United States

The town of Minturn goes back as far as the late 1800s when Minturn’s oldest families settled at the conjunction of Gore Creek and the Eagle River. Some created homesteads and farmed the land, while others mined silver in the mountains high above town. With the arrival of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1887, Minturn quickly developed into a booming crossroads for transportation and industry. The town’s namesake is Robert Bowne Minturn, Jr., who was vice president of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. By the turn of the century, a growing population of mining and railroad workers and their families raised the demands for business and services in town. In response, Minturn was incorporated on November 15, 1904. Over the decades, the little town of Minturn evolved as it was impacted by changes in the local economy. The people endured through tougher times with the closing of the Gilman mine, and the abandonment of the rail road lines, however the growth of new job opportunities increased once again as the Vail and Beaver Creek Mountains developed around them. Despite the changing times, Minturn has maintained its distinctive character, authenticity, and charm. Minturn is now surrounded on three sides by White River National Forest, with the Holy Cross Wilderness bordering the southwest side of the town. The national forest offers hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and other recreational opportunities, making Minturn the perfect host to travelers and outdoor enthusiasts. The Bunkhouse, established in Minturn in 2016, was specifically founded here because of the unique atmosphere and warmth the community provides. Characterized as the only authentic town left in the Vail Valley that hasn’t been developed into a tourist destination, we are proud to be a part of the town that provides an authentic mountain experience.
