We stayed 10 days in Christiane’s and Peter’s apartment in Potsdam, while attending the International Music Festival Sanssouci. This was a repeat visit from 6 years ago, at which time I had rented an apartment in the same (Babelsberg) area. I promised myself then to look for a home nearer to the city center when a subsequent visit would come about. Yet, all things considered, I wound up this time in the very same district again. Advantages are clear: spacious houses, lots of green around, and far away from city noises. We arrived by train, but people with a car will find this part of the city a perfect fit, allowing to park the car around the corner. #####
Disadvantages of the area are resolvable, however. Nearby trams and busses bring you to the city center and festival locations within half an hour. When the weather cooperates you can proficiently use a bike too, with the extra advantage that it is a perfect vehicle to explore the beautiful parks and many sightseeing objects that Potsdam has to offer, all of which are located at distances that nicely match the cruising range of a bike. #####
The apartment itself is on the 2nd floor, no elevator. The staircase is broad and wide, and everyone with normal walking abilities won’t have a problem. As he AIRBNB website truly shows in the photos and the description, the living room is spacious as are the bedrooms. The kitchen offers nearly everything needed to prepare your own meals. When we said to have welcomed a sharp knife to cut vegetables, our cooperative host Christiane brought one a few days later, so such a knife will be included for the foreseeable future. The one and only minus point is definitely the shower, which is located directly under the roof and does not allow an adult to stand straight. I can imagine that younger, more flexible persons will cope, but we, aged 55+, failed to find a suitable position to get the water where needed. The bath tub can be used as an alternative to clean yourself, but who has the time for that?? #####
We had some spurious problems with WiFi Internet, offering sufficient bandwidth but not allowed ample devices to connect, and also dropped active connections some of the time. Our host allowed us to move from the “Guestzugang” (guest access) to their own private access of the Internet router, which is actually not compliant with German laws around Internet usage, so not a definite and structural solution. Yet it again shows the hospitality and obliging attitude of our hosts. #####
All in all, choosing this part of Potsdam is something with pro’s and con’s, as described above, but the apartment itself offers everything needed for a home-away-from home. The shower was the only disadvantage for us, but it is an ancient house with original construction details, making this problem next to unsolvable.
