This house is located right below Japanese alps, where you can enjoy outdoor in mountains, rivers and lakes throughout four seasons. We moved to this area from Tokyo because this area is not commercialized, but intact from urbanization. So if you are looking for something different than usual sightseeing, here could be the place to visit. This house used to be a ski ryokan, and we renovated it by ourselves with abandoned and local materials to maintain nice and old Japanese architectural taste.

The space

Japanese traditional houses usually have less isolation and smaller rooms, but in order to solve the problems, this house was designed by a young prized architect and renovated by ourselves. Please come and see how it changed.

To make a big place where people can gather, we combined 4 rooms into one, placing a big wood stove in the center, so that guests can gather there to relax. Private room is Japanese tatami room, but we have prepared 15cm thick mattress so that everyone can sleep comfortably without hurting your back.

Guest access

You will have your own private room. You can also use shared kitchen, two toilets and shower. We also have huge living room as in the pictures, so please feel free to use it, too.

Interaction with guests

We moved to here from Tokyo after working in the big city more than 10 years to spend more relaxing time. We are a married couple with one baby boy, and are very quiet and calm people. We love DIY, cooking and sharing experience with guests.

Other things to note

Japanese traditional houses are less isolated than western ones, but we renovated living space with very thick isolation. So you can spend with T-shirt and half pants in kitchen space. But you might feel cold in private rooms, so we placed oil heating in each room as well as hot water heating pad in your bed, which you might feel too hot.

Chie and her husband were wonderful, thoughtful hosts. They picked us up/dropped us back at the station, and took us out for soba noodles. Their house is in Japan's lush, green countryside - something to see and experience after Tokyo/Kyoto. Highly recommended.

I stayed at Chie's place for two nights and it was the perfect antidote after several days in Kyoto. You will get a taste of Japanese rural life and Chie and her family's cooking was the best I have eaten so far in Japan. The weather wasn't great for the time I was there but on the morning I was leaving I got a fabulous view of the surrounding mountains - just what I came to Japan to see. My highlight was visiting the local onsen after a day's walking. This is a quiet, non-touristy onsen and there is no English signage. It felt like a real glimpse of Japanese daily life. On the day I was leaving, Chie and her husband offered to take me to an outdoor free onsen several km away. This was a special experience that I would never have had had I not chosen to stay with Chie. After the onsen, they even delivered me to my next accomodation. Chie and her husband were welcoming and helpfully answered my many questions about places to see in the area and chatting with them was very interesting. Their baby is very sweet as well! Oh and I saw a monkey on my walk.

Thank you very much for visiting us. It was unforgettable experience for us that you drew a drawing of my husband and baby. Please visit us again because we have far more recommendations that you would love for your drawing and painting. And it is also good inspiration for us to see how you draw. We are really waiting for you and keep the drawing until then:)

I'm a so so glad that I decided to stay at Omachi, rather than base myself in Matsumoto as originally planned. The hosts are phenomenal, very friendly and welcoming you into their beautifully renovated home. I became unwell overnight and was even driven to the pharmacy and all the way to the start of the Alpine-Route because I had missed an earlier bus. I cannot strongly recommend this guest house enough!

We only stayed in Shinano Omachi for two nights, but it was an unforgettable experience. Chie's house is located in a idyllic valley that is still relatively off-the-radar, so you're still able to experience the countryside in its natural state. Under Hayashi's recommendation, we went biking through the rice fields (under a moon and surrounded by the towering alps!), through the town to local coffee and soba shops, and around the lake to an outdoor onsen. Chie and Hayashi decorated their house with a really artistic eye, and Chie's cooking skills are phenomenal! It's truly a place to make you reexamine what it means to live life well (or just to take a break from the daily grind) :)

Hi, we moved to this place from Tokyo after working in the big city more than 10 years to pursuit relaxing life. I used to work at real estate company and my husband used to work at financial industry. We both love nature, outdoor, art, and architecture. We renovate this house by ourselves. We study farming, natural dyeing, climbing and so on. If you are interested in Japanese rural living or want to relax in a quiet area, please visit us:)
