Set in the heart of the New Town, this gorgeous property has recently been refurbished to the highest standard. As well as a host of period features and grand reception rooms, the modern bathrooms and kitchen make this house very special. (Sleeps 7)

The space

Great King Street is in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic New Town. It is an exceptional house. It was built in around 1815. In the past few years, it has been carefully remodelled and refurbished to a very high standard. The current owner is an Edinburgh Lawyer. He and his wife have three young children.

The flat will comfortably sleep 7 in a twin room, a single room and two double bedrooms - one of which is ensuite. One of the double beds is an Emperor and the other is a Super King.

The house is located on the ground, first and second floors of the building. The rooms have high ceilings and working shutters. Some of the plasterwork details (especially cornices) are of an exceptionally high standard. There are open fires and elegant marble fireplaces in the public rooms.

Guest access

Main door access. There is a double hallway floored with distinctive Victorian encaustic tiles. The whole house apart from a small dressing room is at the guests' disposal.

On the ground floor, there is a stunning dining room with a desk and large dining table. The latter can comfortably seat 8 for a lunch or dinner party. On this floor, there is also a large kitchen (Miele appliances, microwave and oven / hob) and a separate utility room. The latter has a Miele dryer and Miele washing machine. There is a small loo on this floor.

On the first floor, there is a huge L-shaped Drawing Room and an interconnected smaller Sitting Room. A double door separating the two public rooms can be opened to create an enormous open plan living space. The Drawing Room is probably one of the most beautiful rooms in Edinburgh. On the first floor, there is also a small single bedroom with ensuite loo.

On the second floor, the bedrooms have been designed to provide flexible accommodation as follows:

The Master Bedroom with an Emperor bed and ensuite bath / shower room and TV;
Second Bedroom with king sized bed;
Twin Bedroom with two single beds; and
Main Bathroom with large bath and extremely generous separate shower
The whole house is designed around a large, grand staircase and, during the Summer months, natural light floods into the stairwell through a cupola.

Interaction with guests

As we’ll be out of Edinburgh for the Summer, the meet and greet service will be done by our friends Michael and Andrew who work nearby. Once a booking has been accepted either Andrew or Michael will take over. They’ll sort out the arrival time details and any queries you might have during your stay.

Other things to note

For over 200 years, Great King Street has been widely acknowledged as one of the finest streets in Edinburgh. All the properties are Grade A listed and many of the houses / flats have been occupied by famous painters, writers and academics.

The New and Old Towns of Edinburgh are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. To John Betjeman, Edinburgh was the “ … most beautiful of all the capitals of Europe”. The city also inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to declare that “no situation could be more commanding for the head of a kingdom”. HRH Prince Charles has described it as his favourite city.

This is a perfect family home and a wonderful place to stay in Edinburgh. The rooms are large, comfortable and homely. The host is accommodating, helpful and welcoming. Check-in was effortless and quick. The house was very clean with good bed linen and towels. The 'Information pack' the host has left at the house is a useful guide and gives a welcoming glimpse of the lovely family who normally reside here. The Caledonian will miss me staying at their Alexander Bell Suite if Donald continued to AirBnb! Thank you Donald and Family.

I booked this exceptional townhouse for our 6 Shanghai friends for their holiday in Edinburgh from 6th to 8th August. They were very impressed by this Grade A listed historical building. All the rooms are neat and well presented when they arrived. Walk through the entrance hall, there are dining room, kitchen & breakfast room, WC,utility room on the ground floor and stairs lead to upper floors. The single room, main bathroom, family room and lounge are on the first floor. And the master bedroom with En-suite, 1 double bedroom , 1 twin room on the 2nd floor. The whole property is presented with loads of historical features, which we are really impressed by! There is a detailed instruction guide prepared by the house owner, covered almost everything in the house. The kitchen is supplied with double oven, hob, 2 fridges, freezer, microwave oven, dishwasher, toaster and kettle. The washing machine is in the utility room. There is a shelf with all kind of the spices, you can also find seasoning in the cupboard. There are plenty of high quality of cookware in the cupboard. If you'd like to cook here, it has everything you need! There is a large collection of DVD and a huge amount of books in the house. There are also lots of nice books for children. My friend has 2 little daughters aged 6&8, they love those books very much and read them during their stay. The only thing need to improve is the internet connection, the wifi signal sometimes isn't so stable. Thanks for the owners Mr & Mrs Davidson being so thoughtful , the house really got everything you need during your stay. I highly recommend this property to everyone who is looking for holiday accommodation in central Edinburgh.

Donald's home was positively lovely. The house is located in New Town which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The house dates to 1815 and the views were fantastic; what a way to experience the city. The location was very walkable to all the major sights, and had easy access to public transit as well. The beds were very comfortable and the towels and linens were of a high standard. Donald was very easy to communicate with and check-in and out were easy. If you have the opportunity to stay here I would highly recommend it. Many thanks to Donald for an amazing stay at a historic gem.
