Set in the heart of the New Town, this gorgeous property has recently been refurbished to the highest standard. As well as a host of period features and grand reception rooms, the modern bathrooms and kitchen make this house very special. (Sleeps 7)
Great King Street is in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic New Town. It is an exceptional house. It was built in around 1815. In the past few years, it has been carefully remodelled and refurbished to a very high standard. The current owner is an Edinburgh Lawyer. He and his wife have three young children.
The flat will comfortably sleep 7 in a twin room, a single room and two double bedrooms - one of which is ensuite. One of the double beds is an Emperor and the other is a Super King.
The house is located on the ground, first and second floors of the building. The rooms have high ceilings and working shutters. Some of the plasterwork details (especially cornices) are of an exceptionally high standard. There are open fires and elegant marble fireplaces in the public rooms.
Main door access. There is a double hallway floored with distinctive Victorian encaustic tiles. The whole house apart from a small dressing room is at the guests' disposal.
On the ground floor, there is a stunning dining room with a desk and large dining table. The latter can comfortably seat 8 for a lunch or dinner party. On this floor, there is also a large kitchen (Miele appliances, microwave and oven / hob) and a separate utility room. The latter has a Miele dryer and Miele washing machine. There is a small loo on this floor.
On the first floor, there is a huge L-shaped Drawing Room and an interconnected smaller Sitting Room. A double door separating the two public rooms can be opened to create an enormous open plan living space. The Drawing Room is probably one of the most beautiful rooms in Edinburgh. On the first floor, there is also a small single bedroom with ensuite loo.
On the second floor, the bedrooms have been designed to provide flexible accommodation as follows:
The Master Bedroom with an Emperor bed and ensuite bath / shower room and TV;
Second Bedroom with king sized bed;
Twin Bedroom with two single beds; and
Main Bathroom with large bath and extremely generous separate shower
The whole house is designed around a large, grand staircase and, during the Summer months, natural light floods into the stairwell through a cupola.
Interaction with guests
As we’ll be out of Edinburgh for the Summer, the meet and greet service will be done by our friends Michael and Andrew who work nearby. Once a booking has been accepted either Andrew or Michael will take over. They’ll sort out the arrival time details and any queries you might have during your stay.
Other things to note
For over 200 years, Great King Street has been widely acknowledged as one of the finest streets in Edinburgh. All the properties are Grade A listed and many of the houses / flats have been occupied by famous painters, writers and academics.
The New and Old Towns of Edinburgh are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. To John Betjeman, Edinburgh was the “ … most beautiful of all the capitals of Europe”. The city also inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to declare that “no situation could be more commanding for the head of a kingdom”. HRH Prince Charles has described it as his favourite city.
