The rocky "lawn" is a medley of weeds. Shoes are necessary in this rocky terrain. The boat house and dock are for the private use of the guests.

Our woodland retreat in Newton NJ is on 10 private acres and just 75 minutes from NYC. The historic cabin comfortably sleeps 4 with plenty of windows to view the lake and surrounding woods.

The space

This woodland retreat in Newton NJ is on 10 private acres and just 75 minutes from NYC. It's one of only six private properties overlooking a state-owned, 117 acre glacial lake.

Elements of our cabin were built 100 years ago from a Sears cabin kit. The cabin is rustic in nature, with the plumbing, electricity, kitchen and bathroom up to basic modern standards. One bedroom has a queen bed, the 2nd bedroom has bunk beds .

Eat-in-kitchen includes dishwasher, toaster, microwave, stove, refrigerator, coffee maker and plenty of pots, dishes, utensils and a large picture window with stunning lake views.

New Jersey weather ranges from hot & humid to quite cool. Two propane heaters warm up the cabin quickly and there are fans in every room.

Amenities: Washer & dryer, filtered well water, gas grill, bath towels and linens. Pets negotiable. Kids are most welcome.

There is no WiFi nor air conditioning.
All major cell carriers work.
When possible, I can be flexible with check in and check out times. No smoking inside the cabin.

Other things to note

We love our cabin, the surrounding woods, and lake and enjoy sharing it with others. We expect our guests to respect the property, nature and our neighbors. Let me know if you plan on any additional daytime visitors. The cabin property is not for large social gatherings or parties.

As is typical of the area, the rocky terrain is uneven and steep in places. Sensible shoes are highly recommended.

Ruth was actively engaged with ensuring that we had a trip to remember, even before we had stepped foot on the property. Being a complete urbanite, this was unlike any place I had ever visited but exactly what was needed. The cabin was homely and had all the amenities that you would need but was a complete detox for the mind, body and soul. Waking up to such natural beauty was inspiring and joyful; we wanted a couple of days just for "us" and we got that and more. To top it off, Ruth was kind enough to let us know that we could take our time during checkout (as my partner is in LA and I am in London every second together counts) and we very much appreciated her generosity. I would have no hesitation in returning nor recommending this place.

We only had 2 days in this wonderful spot and unfortunately it rained on both days but despite this we had a great time and enjoyed the tranquillity and beauty of the area. The cabin was comfortable, well appointed and atmospheric.Thank you Ruth, everything was perfectly organised and although we did not meet you I know you would have responded if we had any problems.

Great location. Quiet and secluded yet close enough to goto dinner / shopping in town, the cabin itself was very clean and comfortable. Ruth was very accommodating and flexible with check in / out. The lake is also beautiful and the dock is clean and in good condition. I paddled the entire lake with a kayak rented at the far side of the lake. Canoes are provided with the cabin but I wanted to try a kayak. We would definitely return again next year and highly recommend this cabin !

I honestly loved the entire stay. From the moment we pulled up- we fell in love. This is the perfect place for rest, quiet space & relaxation. Everything was so clean & well kept- we are absolutely planning another stay at this little oasis! There was so much to do on the grounds we didn't even have a chance to do everything we wanted to. Fishing, hiking, BBQ, camp fire, swimming, coffee on the dock it was great. Night time gets dark so bring a flashlight. There is a little pub right near the house with good food and nice atmosphere. If you drive to the other side of lake there is paddle board rentals and kayaks in addition to what's provided with the house. Andover bait shop is close to buy bait. Near the bait shop there is also a few antique shops a gas station with mini mart and a Dunkin donuts inside the mini mart! . The water on the lake was crystal clear, if you have kids they will catch small fish all day. I didn't have much luck out fishing on the canoe, but I can say from being a fisherman my whole life this lake is very deep and there has to be big fish living in it. Ruth made this a great experience, she had all the details of the house mapped out, I felt right at home and I loved her no shoes rule. To say the least, this place is squeaky clean!

The pictures do not do this beautiful house justice. The house was bigger than expected, the fire pit was huge with ample seating, the boat house had tons of fun things to use, and the house was stocked with many useful necessities. The beds were extremely comfortable and the owners were more than accommodating to requests we had. We felt like kids again, especially in the tree house. This property is highly recommended and I will definitely be returning in the future.
