We spent a wonderful week at Joan's at the end of August. The house is lovely providing a good night's sleep, beautiful views and great outdoor space...the pool is big! Our arrival was greeted by Joao and her lovely parents. They kindly provided us with some basics...butter, bread, milk, fruit, biscuits and lovely local port. Joao was always available for any query or recommendations - she replies very quick and is incredibly helpful!!! Even when the weather wasn't great we could spend our time in the games room. I would definitely recommend a stay at White House Douro.

We would give the White House 6 stars if we could. From start to finish Joao and her family have been so helpful and thoughtful. The house is truly magnificent, exactly as described but until you are there you cannot appreciate how good. We loved the outdoor kitchen, the pool and the pool table. The kitchen has everything you could need (from an electric juicer to coffee machines to a fantastic array of crockery and cutlery etc etc), we have never rented a property this well equipped before. We took day trips to Porto, Barcelos - big market on a Thursday, Fisgas De Ermelo - Water falls and pools (great swimming) and Amarante (they are all a bit of a drive but well worth the effort) but mainly just enjoyed relaxing at the White House. The supermarket in Sousselo is well stocked with really helpful staff, in fact everyone we met in Portugal went out of their way to help even other customers offering to translate and offer advice. We will certainly be looking to return, reluctantly we have to recommend the White House to everyone when really we would like to keep this gem of a property to ourselves!!

Amazing views with an amazing host. From the moment we started communicating with Maria we knew we had found somewhere very special, nothing was too much trouble and Maria answered all our questions and helped us plan trips when we arrived. Even helping us get our toll fees paid at the local bakery, who also happen to sell the most amazing rolls and custard tarts. The house lived up to the description on the website, but the pool, was so much better than expected, it was large and had a good deep end at 2.75 metres so you could get a decent swim in. The house is high up on the side of the river valley so the views are stunning but the real bonus was meeting our host Maria and her parents, they are clearly very proud of the house and you can see why. The directions to the house worked well and we took up Marias recommendation to stop and have lunch at restaurant beside a bridge a short distance away b3fore we checked in. Another great recommendation, friendly staff, good food at excellent value. We were a family of 8 adults1 child and a baby so the-lace was perfect, do be aware the house is on slope so there are quite a few stairs to get in but that is normal for Lisbon and Porto! One thing that always concerns us is the amount of cutlery, chairs etc, but the White House is very well equipped and we were never short of anything. We cannot recommend this listing highly enough, it is a really gem.

When we arrived at the White House by the the Douro river, we couldn't quite believe our eyes! The pictures are amazing but they can't do justice to just how beautiful the house and its surroundings actually are. The house is absolutely stunning with so many rooms and conveniences that if you wanted to, you could happily spend your entire vacation there! With games room complete with pool table, the outdoor kitchen and barbeque and the pool which has to be seen to be believed. João was quite frankly, the best airbnb host we have ever had. She provided us with so much information before during and after our stay, was in constant contact and even came to find us when we lost our way on the journey in! Such a wonderful host and person, João was always at the end of the phone to tell us where to go and how to get where we needed to be in the local area. She made our stay even more wonderful by being so helpful. She was more like a good friend than a host. The house itself is in an unbelievably beautiful part of Portugal right by the Douro river with quick and easy access to Porto, the Port wine producing regions and a multitude of picturesque villages and historical sites. You can sail down the river, walk through the amazing landscape, eat amazing food and enjoy the fantastic wines of the region including Port and Vinho Verde! We stayed for a week and it just wasn't long enough! on the final day we were trying to figure out ways to miss another day or two of work and stay that little bit longer. The whole experience from beginning to end was amazing, the house is perfect and our host João even better! If your looking for a relaxing and picturesque place from which to base your exploration of this part of Portugal then there is nowhere better than the White House with João as your host. We're already planning our next trip!

João house was charming, well maintained and has absolutely stunning views. For foodies out there, the outdoor BBQ was unexpectedly wonderful and kitchen more than fully equipt and out-door eating areas just perfect (weather permitting). Although the house is old and appears to not have been remodeled recently it's extremely well maintained. The pool area was amazing although unfortunately it was a bit too chilly to use in September and for child safety we also couldn't us it (pool on one side and cliff on the other). Communication with Joao was wonderful and she very kindly recommended things to do in the area. The only downsides we could think of, for our needs, was the location. We aimed to stay 1/2 way between Porto and the wine region but in the end the drive from the house was 1,5 hours to the wine region...the same distance from Porto as there is a highway on the other side of the river that this house doesn't take advantage of (but the drive was amazing). Also it was challenging to find top quality groceries (for foodies, basics are readily available) or good restaurants beyond local spots. In general I highly recommend this house especially for families with kids over the age of 5.

João and her parents are very lovely hosts. You feel like you stay at friends! Special thanks to João and her family for all the efforts in advance to our stay. Without them our wedding would not have been so wonderful! The white house is awesome - very cosy and comfortable with a dream of a view over the douro. All of the guests loved it so much to stay on the huge balcony and enjoyed the great pool! Everything was perfect and everybody hopes to come again soon :)

"I urge you to travel. As far and as much as possible. Throw yourself out of your comfort zone. Find out how other people live & realise that the world is a much bigger place than the town you live in.
And when you come home, home may still be the same and yes, you may go back to the same old job, but something in your mind will have changed. And trust me - that changes everything."
