We chose St Andrews because of the long sandy beaches, old, old town, amazing scenery and proximity to airports and trains. Our cottages - named after West Sands and East Sands - can be rented together or separately; are converted from 18thC stables buildings and set just outside the centre of town in beautiful quiet grounds.

The space
I travelled extensively in work and play before moving to Scotland, and believe all our guests deserve accommodation the way I'd want it to be myself. You get your own cottage: no shared amenities. Our stables buildings were lovingly converted and restored by local craftsmen using stone and natural materials. We use good white sheets. You get a proper coffee machine. A wine-cooler, if you want it. Woodburning stoves and underfloor heating beneath the slate tiles to keep you cosy in the nippy Scottish winters. You can park right in front of your cottage - we're enough outside town to get total quiet yet close enough for a good walk, cycle or taxi in for the local sights, shops, bars, cinema, theatre and restuarants.

Each of our 2 cottages has one bathroom to two bedrooms, which are configured as a twin and a king/double. Some people rent the space as a couple, others come with friends, some rent both cottages. West Sands is slightly roomier in the living area - maybe ideal for bigger kids - and East Sands has a bigger kitchen with a glimpse of the sea.

United Kingdom

The medieval town of St Andrews is unique. We have a 400 year old university with a mighty history, and our stables buildings are the same age - wow!
St Andrews is also the home of golf. None of us play but it seems we're about the only people in this town who don't. Golfers are welcome. Families with kids are welcome, 4 to a cottage. Students - we love you but we can't offer you longterm lets - sorry. Come and escape for a long weekend, or send your visiting parents or friends to us and we'll look after them instead.

Kincaple is one of the last stone-built villages close to St Andrews - another is Boarhills, which is the start of our favourite section of the Fife Coastal path (not recommended for cyclists in view of the many stone steps). The small stone cottages in these villages housed the workers who farmed the land, fished and who worked in the big houses in and around St Andrews. Our mansion house was the old Kincaple House, which burned down and was rebuilt later, so our stables and Coach House are older than the newer, Georgian Kincaple House now standing. We have a rich history full of family feuds and fighting to fires and the establishment of a distillery, and were the rural site where the royal horses were discreetly stabled when Mary, Queen of Scots was in hiding in St Andrews - we can still show you the royal coat of arms built into the stone walls of the Coach House opposite the cottages. Apparently the royal stable boys were very ill-mannered -- the old deeds show legal action taken out against their bad behaviour. Times have changed and we, on the other hand, are very nice to our guests.

I've travelled a lot in my work as a freelance writer and out of it. We moved to St Andrews in Scotland from my last stop (Amsterdam NL) for the rugged scenery, the beaches, the Scottish way of life (yes, times have changed and you can get *great* food here) and for the poetry. It's beautiful here: bring a sweater. And for what it's worth, I *never* say 'hey, I'm Claudia'.
