The space

Stunning architectural features abound in this beautiful Queen Ann circa 1800 mansion. There are stained glass windows and transoms, original tin ceiling, 5 original fireplaces, mantle pieces, etched glass, tiger oak cabinetry and fret work, carved hand painted crown molding, 6 ft. custom designed ceiling medallion in the dining room and birds-eye maple floors throughout. The restoration of this home along with authentic victorian antiques and vintage photos of Helena provide for a relaxing and interesting stay.

Guest access

Guests have access to the entire main floor and grounds. A complimentary beverage cart is available for guests in the evening. The front porch and back veranda provide a great space to relax with a cold drink after a long day of traveling. The spacious parlor boasts a baby grand piano for those who like to play and is a favored gathering spot when the weather is inclement. The den is perfect for reading or catching up on a favorite sports team on a big screen. The library offers travelers a place to work or play cards and board games and the office is truly an ode to Helena's by-gone days, favored artists and sculptors, plus an amazing seal collection. There is a large spacious kitchen with storage for guests' perishables. To keep our rates low, breakfast is not automatically included for Airbnb guests. Before your arrival or during your stay, we are happy to discuss adding breakfast for additional charge.

Interaction with guests

When you check in, you'll be given a tour of the mansion plus shown the location of brochures, menus and maps of Helena. We'd be happy to recommend things to do and places to eat during your stay and answer any questions you may have.

The whole place was lovely. It was so cool to stay there. I felt very welcome and at home. The room was clean, comfortable and beautiful. It was an easy walk to anywhere I needed to go. I only wish I had been on vacation instead of a business trip so that I could have enjoyed the place more!

Booked this room at a moments notice and it was close to downtown and everything I needed. The accommodations were clean, quiet and I had a private bathroom. You will enjoy your stay here for sure!

Nick is an excellent host ... thoughtful, knowledgable and willing to share information and conversation. The Barrister is exactly as pictured in the photos provided ... and even more beautiful really. A stunningly gorgeous Victorian Mansion, carefully and lovingly retrofitted to serve as a B&B, and it works perfectly (one example is the old singer sewing machine transformed into a bathroom sink in the Morning Room). The neighborhood is quiet, the B&B is clean and well cared for and that care is palpable, and the cathedral across the street glows in the light of dusk reminding you that you are in a truly special place in a magical town. I stayed for 7 nights and within two days I was calling the Barrister home! When I return to Helena I will definitely stay at the Barrister!

We had a wonderful stay at The Barrister. Once we arrived, we were given a tour of the house by Nick and it was a really nice gesture which gave us insight into the history of the house. Our stay was very pleasant, but it's the little things that added that final touch. We also got to meet his sister who was very nice as well, and made us feel right at home. Be sure to get coffee in the morning with the other guests and meet the hosts if you can! :)

We had a lovely stay. We were in town for a wedding and it was so nice to have a place to come and feel at home. Very friendly and helpful.

Nick User ProfileNick is a superhost.

I'm a 5th generation Montanan, having grown up 4 blocks from my present home and guest inn, The Barrister. I'm a graduate of the University of Montana and a retired criminal defense attorney. My most satisfying experience has been refurbishing and running a Bed & Breakfast that reflects the history of this gold mining town. I invite you to come enjoy this circa 1800 mansion and the Helena history that's kept here!
