I stayed in Jason and Pemba's rooms three times on my trip to Nepal and they were all great. I came back to this room after leaving for a few days and it was like coming back home. Great people are usually sprinkled around the place, especially on the weekends. The rooms and facilities are clean and work well, and have good privacy. This room shares a bathroom with a room across the hall, but I literally never saw anyone from there. Breakfast was good, the staff was all super friendly and helpful, and it was a great experience. Clean towels and linens were provided and there was a water cooler in the kitchen. I highly recommend staying with Jason and Pemba to any people looking to have a positive and meaningful experience while visiting Nepal on a short- or long-term basis. If I return to Nepal, I would definitely make an effort to stay with them again.

Staying at Jason and Pemba's place was absolutely great. This was my first experience staying at an airbnb and I couldn't have asked for more. They are both great hosts and people and were extremely helpful with anything that I needed, even if I did pester them with constant questions. The room itself was great, on the first floor of a house that has multiple rooms and guests, which is definitely part of the charm of the place. People from all over the world were here, and sitting outside and chatting and laughing with them was one of my favorite parts of the trip. Jason and Pemba would join as well, and you could really feel the sense of community that they have fostered in this place. They're working on some really cool projects so I would suggest chatting with them when you can. The staff was also friendly and helpful and delightful to be around. The breakfast, from 8-10:30, was good and they would make eggs and toast and veggies usually, as well as tea or coffee, with Saturday being a brunch day with a more varied menu. The room was comfortable and there was an outlet in there for your phone or laptop, which plugged in easily using my Korean plug. The shower and bathroom is right next to the room and work well. It is shared with the room opposite to yours, but nobody was there when I stayed so I had it to myself. The hot showers are a great thing to have in this city with so much dust everywhere. I would absolutely recommend staying here. It was my first time in Nepal and my first time using airbnb and I had great experiences with both. Thanks to Jason and Pemba, and to everyone I met at their place!

Really enjoyed my stay. Fantastic host. Patan is NGO central so quite a few of the other guests work in that field and have been in Kathmandu for a while so we're able to offer great tips and advice for a noob. Room was great. Spacious and clean. Extension socket next to bed meant phone never had to be far away. Wifi was very fast. Could watch video no problem. Because they do various out-reach and charitable work there are always interesting people around. My second day people were making soap! Breakfast was very tasty and set me up for the day. Couldn't recommend highly enough. Wish I could have stayed longer. Thanks

The energy of the house is what really makes it. I felt like I was at a nightly meeting of the minds. A round table of different cultures and intellect coming together to discuss current affairs and possible solutions to every day issues facing our communities. There were long term guests working on research as well as travelers just for a few nights. We all enjoyed breakfast together and nightly drinks and desserts. The atmosphere was great for a solo travel or groups alike. The room was exactly as pictured and breakfast is included. The two hosts were helpful with arrival and departure also with suggestions an where to go. If you're in town on a Thursday join their free walking tour of patan as well! Would highly recommend staying here! Super affordable and not far from from any of the major sites.

Response from Jason & Pemba:
Hi Brittney! Thank you for such a wonderful, positive review. You left our 50th review on airbnb :) We enjoyed your stay in the house and the funky, cheerful vibe you have. You are the kind of guests we want in our house - curious and courteous people who care about their personal responsibilities to communities they call home. Breakfast and occasional dinners are our way of curating a friendly and supportive group dynamics in our house, and it is great fun to see guests and our friends engage and learn from each other. And, thanks for the shout out to the walking tour; I have personally learnt so much from giving these tours on heritage and Newari Buddhism. Once again, thank you for choosing to stay with us and best wishes with your travels in Bhutan! - Jason

Welcome to the vibrant Kathmandu valley!

Our valley is large and diverse, yet we know it intimately! While the urban core of the valley can get crowded, loud, and challenging, it also offers incredible opportunities to explore ancient religions, old architecture, and incredible cultural heritage. Kathmandu and Patan, in its unity, is a city of 4 million people in the day but a town of 4000 people late in the night; you run into your friends everywhere.

During your stay in Kathmandu, your exploration need not limit itself in the durbar squares or backpackers’ areas; just beyond the city core, and within 30mins drive, are rice fields, old towns, hikes, bike trails, adventure sports, and incredible sights. One thing for sure, you might come for the mountains, but you will return for the people.

About us:

We are two friends, born and raised in different socio-cultural identities within the territories of Nepal. Pemba grew up in terraced farms near rugged mountains, and Jason came of age running through narrow alleys of fertile valley plains. Apples and Oranges, if you will! We met as 'couchsurfers' in Kathmandu valley, which we both call home now.

As we started hanging out, drinking, dancing, and sharing our ideas, we realized that we both shared similar ideas of a "good life". Hence, we have set forth with a multidimensional platform "SherpaShah," combining our last names, to forge enterprises and initiatives that champion grassroots sustainability, urban renewal, sharing economy, civic responsibilities, and introspective travel.

We love traveling for conversations and inspirations, not necessarily for the newness of places or people. Along the way, we have heard incredible personal stories and met exceptional practitioners of social change; these experiences inspire us to live a life of creativity, camaraderie, community, and challenges. Irrespective of destinations, we share the fascination with sights and sounds of daily life in its vernacular. We hope you travel similarly.

As you develop ideas to explore the vastness of Nepali landscape and diverse cultures, we want to offer you our experiences in planning your travel! Come, stay with us to begin :) Our SherpaShah crew, a team of young, passionate Nepalis, are excited to host you in our homes and invite you to our communities!

Our homes:

All room listings belong to our two homes:

1. PATANsquared: This beautiful home is located just outside the historic city of Patan. We are very close to attractions, cafes, restaurants, bars, and music venue. Public transportation is easy, cabs are available, and there are lot of options for shopping - grocery or souvenirs. All 6 rooms of this house are listed on airbnb. Beside being our home, PATANsquared is an urban community hub that brings together curious minds and accomplished professionals - travelers and city residents - from all walks of life to inquire about personal responsibilities for social good. We host free walking tours of Patan every Thursdays, homemeade dinners and discussions on food systems every alternate Fridays, and "Sunny Bar Brunch" - with great food and attractive cocktails - every Saturdays. As our guests, you are invited to all of these events, or you can stay in the privacy of your room or relax in our terraces, if you prefer.

2. Dhulikhel GetAway: This luxurious home is tucked away in leafy surroundings of Dhulikhel just one hour outside the city. Overlooking the Himalayas, our home is a great place to rejuvenate, relax, and rejoice with your friends. Jason set up and operated a learning center - with natural buildings and organic agro-forestry - in a village nearby for two years and still hosts experiential learning programs for students regularly. We have incredible relationship with the residents of this town, and we leverage these partnerships to organize hikes, monastery stays, old town tours, organic farm visits, bike trips, and cooking courses. When you book to stay, you get the privacy of an entire home. Nepali meals are prepared and delivered by a local family on request.
