We're close to the medieval town and beaches of St Andrews - just 2 miles from the centre, so you can cycle/walk as well as drive. You’ll love our place because of its quiet location on a country estate: from here you can walk, golf, sightsee, in winter go up and ski at Glenshee; head to Edinburgh (1hr by train) and Glasgow, eat in fabulous restaurants or stay and cook in our well-equipped kitchen. Good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, families (with kids), and furry friends.

The space
There are many holiday properties around Fife, and many claiming to be close to St Andrews. We live here, which is testimonial enough: the property took us some time to find, but when we did we could see why the then owner called it a 'hidden gem' -- it's only 2 miles from the centre, yet tucked away off the main drag in a quiet, rural location which sees snowdrops, bluebells and spectacular swathes of daffodils in spring and is home to deer, badgers, a woodpecker, nesting swifts and many varieties of wild and garden birds: the lovely spot is why we chose to down tools and stay. We have a hunch you'll agree it really is something special.

For cyclists, walkers and runners it's perfect because the Fife Coastal path runs into St Andrews from the bottom of the lane into Kincaple (it's a 2-miler, for you runners: running guide in the cottage). A good run (or short drive) away are the famous Old Course and West Sands beach - for golf, walks, runs, family activities like land yachting - or the continuation of the coastal path for a rugged, scenic walk with spectacular views. There are day trips to be had around the old fishing villages East Neuk (Eastern corner) of Fife, where you can get fresh lobster, visit a smokery or explore miles of beautiful coastline and beaches. St Andrews itself has the university, several good restaurants and the nearby Peat Inn, run by friends and Michelin starred.

Where you’ll be

St Andrews, Scotland, United Kingdom

Kincaple is one of the last stone-built villages close to St Andrews - another is Boarhills, which is the start of our favourite section of the Fife Coastal path (not recommended for cyclists in view of the many stone steps). The small stone cottages in these villages housed the workers who farmed the land, fished and who worked in the big houses in and around St Andrews. Our mansion house was the old Kincaple House, which burned down and was rebuilt later, so our stables and Coach House are older than the newer, Georgian Kincaple House now standing. We have a rich history full of family feuds and fighting to fires and the establishment of a distillery, and were the rural site where the royal horses were discreetly stabled when Mary, Queen of Scots was in hiding in St Andrews - the owner can still show you the royal coat of arms built into the stone walls of the Coach House opposite the cottages. Apparently the royal stable boys were very ill-mannered -- the old deeds show legal action taken out against their bad behaviour. Times have changed and we, on the other hand, are very nice to our guests.

I've travelled a lot in my work as a freelance writer and out of it. We moved to St Andrews in Scotland from my last stop (Amsterdam NL) for the rugged scenery, the beaches, the Scottish way of life (yes, times have changed and you can get *great* food here) and for the poetry. It's beautiful here: bring a sweater. And for what it's worth, I *never* say 'hey, I'm Claudia'.

During your stay

We live on the premises - across the courtyard, through trees - though you have a private entrance and parking on the other side of the property. We're a friendly and busy family who believe in our privacy and respect yours, so while we like to offer a warm welcome as far as possible - mi casa su casa - we stay out of the way and happily leave you to it. You may spot our two small dogs running about or sunning themselves on the terrace in the lavender; we may see you, we may not, but in all cases if you have any queries or problems there's usually someone on site, at least some of the time, who'll be happy to help.

We aim to keep the cottages at all times in tip-top condition and well maintained, so if you see anything that looks as though it might be wearing out or about to give up the ghost, it's handy if you can let us know - thank you. Please note that in the unlikely event something (a heating control, a TV aerial, plumbing) needs more than just simple attention, we can only get repairs done as fast as the trades can come out, which is rarely the same day (and unlikely on a Sunday, or eg on Christmas day): in such a case we may ask for access to the property in your absence. We are sorry if there is any inconvenience.
