Neighbourhood highlights

Walmgate and Fossgate, right by St Denys Road are populated with many locally owned, independent cafes, restaurants and shops. These are only a minute or two's stroll away. We’ve mentioned some here but there are lots of other good ones we’ve not mentioned. The best thing is to go and browse.

The Barbakan, only a few metres away from No 59 on Walmgate serves delicious Polish cuisine in a friendly, informal setting. It's open most of the time: breakfast, lunch, dinner. A couple of doors along from the Barbakan is the Khao San Road. Eat in or take away, there is a great variety of delicious Thai food. Just opposite is the Cochon Aveugle serving innovative and delicious food from regularly changed set menus. Next, another few metres along Walmgate is El Gaucho, a really good Argentinian steakhouse, friendly and informal primarily serving (as the name suggests!) a variety of steak. Il Paradiso del Cibo does outstanding Sardinian / Italian food in a cheerful, informal setting.

Just over the bridge in Fossgate, there any number of excellent cafes and restaurants, including the award-winning Spring cafe which is a haven for coffee fans. There's also a wonderful, unspoiled old fashioned pub called the Blue Bell. It has good beer and is much frequented by locals. There is a wonderful deli, the Hairy Fig stock up on ingredients (there is also a cafe)

Le Langhe, about ten minutes walk, is both an exceptionally good Italian deli and wine merchant and also a cafe and restaurant.

It probably goes without saying (but we’ll say it anyway) Betty’s is unique and wonderful in every way. It’s open all day, seven days a week and whether you pop in for breakfast or want a light supper, you won’t regret waiting in the queue. You can book though! You can also buy a variety of cakes, buns, bread and chocolates at the food counter, as well as a wide range of coffees and teas.

Via Vecchia in the Shambles is an award-winning craft bakery supplying York restaurants and delis (the Hairy Fig sell their bread). However if you happen to be passing fairly early in the day (they close once the bread’s sold), it’s worth looking in to see what they’ve got on the day.

Barnitts has been trading on this site for over a hundred years and continues to expand. To call it a “department store” is technically correct but in reality it is hard to describe the variety and extent of what Barnitts sell in the way of housewares and hardware. And like the Tardis, it seems many times bigger inside than out.

Stone Trough Books is just round the corner from No 59 and if you’re a fan of second-hand book shops, put aside time to visit it. In winter, there’s usually a fire burning upstairs and a comfy sofa too. The stock ranges from readable and inexpensive paperbacks to rare editions and includes poetry, biography and art.

York has branches of most of the national stores you’d expect, often with more than one outlet. Just outside the city walls are a large Waitrose, Morrisons and Sainsburys. We are within the delivery area of all the large supermarkets.

There are a number of city centre branches of the best-known supermarkets, the nearest (Tesco) only about four minutes walk from No59. There’s an in-town Waitrose about fifteen minutes walk away, though it’s got ample parking and you can drive there in about three minutes.

The York Designer Outlet, on the edge of York is huge and very popular. If you were so-inclined, you could easily spent an entire day there. There are over 120 stores.

There are major out-of-town shopping malls on the edge of York, most notably:

Monks’ Cross (including John Lewis, Sainsbury, Asda, M&S, Boots, WH Smith).

Clifton Moor (including Tesco, Wickes, PC World, Pets at Home).

Visitor attractions.
Unless you’re staying for a very long time, it’s unlikely you will manage to see everything in one go. But these are places it’s worth giving priority. Staying at St Denys Road, you are right in the centre of the city, so all of York's huge variety of places to visit are a stroll away, including the Minster, Jorvik Viking centre, Castle Museum, York's Chocolate Story, National Railway Museum and the Barbican Events Centre.
