The location is close to the center of the town of Barnstable, which can be reached on foot in 15 minutes. There are some nice shops, a good supermarket and restaurants.
The house is rather close to the road, which provides for some noise at peak hours. Given the age of the house, the road location was probably designated long after construction started, in the late 1600's.
The old section of the house has a lot of ambience and charm although one room upstairs is damaged and not included for lodging, and the basement has some humidity issues. The historical value and atmosphere provides for a lot of charm. All bedrooms and the living room feature fire places, although they may not be used, probably for safety reasons (inquire about the one in the new bedroom). The new section houses a large kitchen, very practical for families, and a large bedroom and bathroom upstairs. The bathroom had some minor issues; a plumber was called immediately and it was fixed.
From the first contact for booking to receiving and delivering the keys, everything worked very well with the host, the real estate office where we picked up the keys, etc. Everyone was most efficient and friendly. Nevertheless, I would say that a quick tour of the house with your host would help to iron out any doubts and make the visit a little smoother to get started on.
We loved the house and the unique atmosphere and there was a huge garden in which any outdoor game could be played. Most of the cutlery, the grill, etc., are new and we didn't seem to lack any utensils or equipment. There was dishwashing liquid, hand soap, paper towels and toilet paper as well as all necessary cleaning agents and garbage bags. In week 2, another supply of toilet paper was placed at the door. We didn't know this and so thankfully we checked before going shopping. A pass for the Barnstable county beaches was also made available and wifi worked well.
The location is great if you want to take excursions to nearby towns and many beaches, especially in Dennis where we enjoyed the Mayflower, highly recommended.
The only complaint we had was the cleaning. Here I think both previous tenants and inspection could improve. Overall 2828 Main St. was a good experience and the house is rather special if you enjoy homely places with ambience. We had tried to find something in Chatham or Orleans, having heard they are better places but the location was great for us and the town so small that it stays quiet and doesn’t expose you to large waves of tourists as in many other larger towns, most of which can be reached in a 20-45 min drive.
