The space

Otter’s Den

Otters’ Den awaits those wanting an intimate experience with nature. Secluded in the alder woods on the bank of the river, this little hand-built rustic cabin is surrounded by a natural wonderland. Sitting beside the river or kayaking on it, you can watch families of otters, ducks and geese. Egrets often roost in the trees across the river. Seals also frequent this tidal stretch of the river and foxes make their dens in these woods. Otters Den is a real escape--it is off the grid and out of WiFi and cell phone range (cell service is available 1 mile away).
Along with beautiful views of the trees and river from large south windows, the studio cabin has a queen bed, a glass front propane heater, a cozy kitchen with a full sized propane fridge, propane cook top and large sink. Propane and LED lights illuminate the interior. Outside is an enclosed hot shower, a redwood privy, a Weber BBQ, outdoor table and chairs around the large fire pit. Wood for the fire pit is available at most stores and from vendors along the highway. Bring your own charcoal for the BBQ.
Perfect for those seeking a retreat from the hubbub of city life and an immersion in nature, Otters’ Den is still only 20 minutes from Fort Bragg with it’s galleries, fine dining opportunities, Farmers’ Market, many festivals, great shopping and other activities. It is 5 minutes from miles of beach and sand dunes.
Perfect too for abalone divers. The site is also available for events and camping—when the cabin is not occupied by those seeking to renew themselves in the beauty of nature.
Otters’ Den is part of a large property with other residences. Use of kayaks is included. A two-night minimum is encouraged. Also available by appointment are guided nature tours, tarot readings, and visits with our flock of friendly sheep. No dogs please—you can play with ours.
Recent refurbishing will make your stay even more enjoyable and are reflected in our rates.

Guest access

Guests have access to kayaks, the river and it's swimming hole. The cabin is surrounded by a large open area. The county road along the wetland is a great walk.

Interaction with guests

Usually, after a brief orientation on arrival, guests have all the privacy they want. Though if desired or needed, someone is available anytime.

The neighbourhood

Our neighborhood is one of the most beautiful on earth. Ten Mile Beach and its dunes is just five minutes away and is the longest undeveloped beach in California. On the north side of the Ten Mile River folks can walk on lovely Seaside Beach. The river itself is very gentle for kayaking and folks can expect to see many birds including kingfishers, great blue & other herons, ducks & geese, as well as many kinds of hawks and other species of birds. Seals and otters can be seen in the water. The area also is home to other wild life such as deer, foxes & racoons.
The river valley and its wetlands are a constantly changing tapestry of colors.

Stayed for two nights in this beautiful cabin and cannot wait to return. Otters den is an amazing place if you're looking for a beautiful secluded get away, I am so thankful to have spent my birthday weekend here and wish I could've stayed longer. There is literally nothing more I could've asked for in a weekend get away. I have definitely found my new favorite place.

Since we already live off the grid, my husband's mutterings initially were, "Well...This is a postman's holiday...." Otter's Den provided us with a much-needed escape from the responsibilities, the phone, the work at home, and allowed us to settle in with every amenity from a full complement of kitchen tools, to a very comfie queen bed, to chairs on the deck, at the picnic table, and right on the river's edge, two kayaks awaiting our pottering on the water, widely varied reading, everything spic and span, flowers in the house and out, thick towels, a few condiments, but above all, a bucolic setting amid alder thickets, vultures nesting, foxes zipping about, egrets skimming above the water, and one single other being on the river in four days. Absolutely fabulous tidepooling - ask Judi about her favorite spots. Congenial company, great stories, and our host attentive to any possible needs. The resident goat herd waltzed down to the river and cavorted back again one morning. We ventured into nearby towns a bit, but most of the time, were within half an hour of our snug digs. By the end of our three nights, all we could think of was how to extend, how to return, when to come again, whom to bring with us. The perfect retreat, delightful host.

This was our second stay at the Otters Den. It was still as lovely and peaceful as it was the time before. We will be coming back every year to celebrate our anniversary. Thanks again Team Otter for making us feel so welcome and keeping the Otters Den in tip top shape. We enjoyed the kayaks, the fire pit and all the other accommodations. ❤️

This was our second time returning to the Otter's Den! Without a doubt one of our most favorite destinations for unplugging, relaxing and connecting with the natural world. Thank you, team Otter! We will see you next year!

Magical! I feel as if I've had a week and it was only two nights! Time seems suspended there. I slept so well. Everything has been well thought out. Clean towels, linens, kitchen with all that you could need. The bed is extremely comfortable and I can be a little fussy about that detail. Go kayaking to the sea or just on the river, hike the dunes across the highway (minutes by car), or just relax and dream in the hammock. Amazing people, amazing place.

We are Pat, Raven, Judi, Leu & Ami, living simply on Ten Mile Ranch on the Mendocino Coast--your team for your stay at Otters'Den.

Pat is as busy as her bees, developing permaculture projects in her "free" time between managing the ranch and her nursing job. If you can catch her, she loves to share her permaculture knowledge with folks.

Raven is the hostess with the mostest. She is an herbalist and is also into rocks, trees and ritual. She studies the Way of Mastery and H'opononpono. Raven also does Flower Essence Tarot readings by appointment.

Judi is head shepherd and a naturalist who loves the water & "messing about in boats". She's our Airbnb contact for Otters' Den. Judi & Raven would be happy to take you on a guided nature walk.

Leu and Ami love gardening and taking their goats for long walks in the hills.

We love to travel & meet new people, but don't often get the opportunity, so you'll have to come to us. We love beauty & art--fine is fine, funky is better.
We all want your time on this beautiful land to be as enjoyable as possible. Please let us know how we can best make that happen.
