Set in Mid-Coast Maine, this cabin in the woods combines the quiet and beauty of the natural world in Maine (pond, river and woods at your front door, 30 minutes from ocean beaches) with proximity (2 miles) to great restaurants and cultural activities.
The cabin is upscale rustic, off-the-grid and entirely comfortable. Perfect for a solo retreat for nature-lovers, writers or artists or for a romantic getaway for two.

The space

Do you know how peaceful a home can feel when it's surrounded by nature, uninterrupted even by electricity, microwave, television? In spring, "peepers" fill the night soundscape, joined in summer by bullfrogs in the pond. On your deck facing the pond, you will see our friendly neighborhood heron in stillness, the mating pair of ducks (and perhaps their ducklings!), and perhaps an osprey or eagle soaring overhead. A neighborhood right-of-way gives you access to the most beautiful river in this part of Maine, only steps away from the road, where a small beach offers swimming and kayak or canoe access. On your other deck, if you can tear yourself from bed, you may see the sun rise through the trees.
The space is cozy, self-contained, and very comfortable, making the best use of the small space. Beds are either single, double, or two twins (you specify, we comply), and the mattresses are new, firm and deliciously sleep-inducing.

Guest access

The cabin is entirely yours, with access to the "big house" for showers (spa robes provided!), laundry, hot tub and light kitchen use. Coffee, tea, and water are at the ready in your space, and we'll bring continental breakfast to you every morning along with hot water for washing. A separate but attached building houses the composting toilet (it works!). The cabin is set back about 200 yards from the quiet road along a woodland path. We provide headlamps and flashlights if you don't bring your own. And although we are technically off the grid - lighting is solar-powered - there is electricity access via cable at the cabin, if you need to charge electronics, etc.

Interaction with guests

We'll be here to help when you arrive - toting bags to the cabin, introducing you to the off-the-grid comfort of our peaceful cabin, giving you tips about the house and this wonderful area if you need them - and then we're available when you like, out of your way when you'd rather be left alone.

Nancy's cabin in the woods was a wonderful stay. Nancy is a gracious host. Very relaxed and helpful with anything you may need, such as recommendations for quality local eateries and attractions in the area. She also gave us delicious and satisfying breakfasts to help start our day. The cabin is located on the back of the property in a secluded little spot with a beautiful view of the pond. It's very cozy and relaxing. The setting is reminiscent of Thoreau's Walden Pond, except with a hot tub, a full/queen size bed and other modern luxuries. If the weather is chilly, Nancy has portable heaters that can be set up. We were fine without heaters because the cabin was so well insulated the flame from the oil lamps were enough to heat the cabin in just a few minutes. There's no wifi, but that's okay. You don't go into the woods to surf the web! There's a bathroom separate from the cabin with a modern compost toilet. It's clean, neat and very comfortable. If you've never used one I definitely recommend that you try it. If that's a little too Thoreau for you, you can always walk the forty five seconds to the house to use the bathroom where there's also a shower and sink. If you like the "idea" of camping but not fully ready to commit to sleeping on the ground then this is the place for you. There's also a tent set up behind the cabin with a bed for an additional guest or if someone wants a more camping feel. I can't recommend this place enough. If you've come to Maine looking for a bit of nature then this place is for you. Avoid the hotel/motels and come stay at this beautiful, quiet and cozy little cabin in the woods. You'll leave with wonderful memories. P.S. Make sure you wake up early and walk through the woods to the water to watch the sun rise and ask to take out the complimentary kayaks. The water there is spectacularly pristine and bucolic. You'll experience a piece of Maine that you never would at a hotel/motel.

We had a wonderful getaway at the cabin - it was a great little mid-week escape. The settings is idyllic, the river is fun to kayak on, and the location is close, but not too close, to everything you need. We felt very at home, and look forward to returning!

Where does one start to describe our amazing stay, thanks to Nancy and Dulcie? My sister and I booked this quaint cabin to escape the bustle of Boston, and it was an unexpected slice of heaven! Nancy replied to us right away, and was very helpful in providing directions and answering our questions. The location was appealing to us as we don't have a car - we took the Downeaster train all the way to Brunswick, from where we planned to bike 20 min to Nancy & Dulcie's place (the train had no space for bikes this time, but we took an $8 Brunswick Taxi over). We did sightseeing in town, around Bowdoin, checked out the free Arctic Museum, and stocked up at the Hannaford across the train station, before heading over. Dulcie welcomed us with a cooler of yummy breakfast food (and fresh picked berries), showed us the cabin, the woods, the chimenea (where we grilled corn, veggie sausages, and avocado toast), the kayaks for the calm Androscoggin River a few yards away (which has a mini sandy beach) - and bikes! There was even a backup tent with a bed set up for us. She then left us to enjoy ourselves and just texted to see if we needed anything at any time. On the last night we enjoyed the hot tub in the yard with a view of the woods. Our cabin was so thoughtfully stocked with solar lamps, a USB-charging lamp, a mini cooker, a fan, robes, a face washing station, snacks, books - and a few pages of attractions and restaurants Nancy left us. There is even a power socket underneath the porch! This hidden nook reminded me of the fjords in Norway (craggy, wooded shores). It was all we needed to recharge, and we could not have beaten the location, price, and the kindness of our hosts. Thank you Nancy and Dulcie - you showed us so much generosity. Our hearts are full! We are telling everyone about the cabin and look forward to returning!

We had a wonderful weekend stay at Nancy and Dulcie's cabin! We loved how small, simple and well organized the space was and how generous and welcoming our hosts were to us (e.g setting up a tent with an air mattress so we had some extra space, letting us borrow their kayaks, providing a lovely cold breakfast). The river is right across the street, and beautiful, and the ocean and the city are a short trip away too! We would definitely come stay with them again.

Beautiful and magical woodland space hosted by two beautiful people. Great communication, welcome, and hospitality. Having access to the pristine river, ample hiking, a hotub, and cozy cabin was a treat for a Maine respite.

Nancy and Dulcie were very intelligent, wonderful Hosts. Their breakfasts were special, including freshly baked pastries featuring the fresh blueberries from their yard. The living space was comfortable and privately separate from their residential house. The beautifully "cabin" situated in the woods of central Maine included a quiet burch and furn covered path leading to a peaceful river with a sand beach. The nearby small towns and islands with spectacular sunsets were beautiful. Boothbay and Baileys Island were especially nice. The three hour "mailboat" trip to the islands off Portsmouth, nearby restaurants serving delicious seafood, reminded me of the special attractions of Maine. I encourage you to experience this yourselves.

What a fabulous place! Cozy, comfortable and beautiful!! I feel fortunate to have found such a special place and wonderful hosts! Close by the great little town of Brunswick and yet an off-the-grid oasis of peace and tranquility. I'll be back. Thank you...

My partner, Dulcie, and are are therapists, mothers, writers, and lovers of life in Maine. Between us we also cook, garden, pick up sticks in the yard, build things, and run a business called Wide Open Writing ( which takes us to enchanting places in the world where we lead writing and yoga retreats. We've lived here for over thirty years, and although we love to travel, we're still thrilled to call this area home. Just about everything a person could want is within reach, and the house is surrounded by beautiful gardens and woods. We built the cabin as a writing retreat for ourselves, and then discovered that it was meant to be shared!
