Sula, old Norse for gannet, is a beautiful three bedroom house filled with light and with fantastic views to sea and mountains.

The house has a handmade kitchen, open-plan living area and a wood burning stove. The drying room and shower room by the main entrance makes Sula the ideal place to stay if you love the outdoors. It’s only 300m from the beach and surrounded by mountains, with great sea-kayaking, sailing, mountain biking, climbing, walking, cycling and skiing all on the doorstep

The space
Sula is part of a dispersed settlement in Cuil Bay, a breathtakingly beautiful beach only 15 minutes from Glencoe. The house has enormous south-west facing windows with an outlook to the sea and the islands of Balnagowan and Shuna.

The house has a handmade kitchen, an open-plan living area and a wood burning stove. The drying room and shower room by the main entrance makes Sula the ideal place to stay if you love the outdoors, not to mention that it’s only 300m from the beach and surrounded by mountains, with great sea-kayaking, sailing, mountain biking, climbing, walking and skiing all on the doorstep (and the new Oban-Fort-William cycle route passing close by).

We finished building Sula a couple of years ago and, while we wait to move there, we want to make her available for other people to enjoy.

It is fabulous for relaxing, with huge windows to enjoy the views, and a wood-burning stove for cosy evenings, great restaurants nearby, low level walks, ferry rides to islands, with peace and quiet and wildlife in abundance.

Sula is designed as a low energy house and is really well insulated, has underfloor heating and a heat recovery ventilation system as well as a wood-burning stove.

The main bedroom has a vaulted ceiling, an en suite and fabulous views of Loch Linnhe, past the Isle of Balnagowan and beyond to Shuna and the Isle of Mull.

The house can also be booked via VisitScotland.

I just love Cuil Bay. It is a beautiful sandy and pebbly beach close to the magnificent mountains of Glen Coe and with views south to the Firth of Lorne and the islands of Balnagowan, Shuna and Lismore.

There are so many wonderful things to do and places to go.

I have written a blog showing all the great things to do in the area. If you do a search on 'Cuil Bay blog' you will find it.

Here's a taste of the top things to do:

Winter:
Skiing at Glencoe (30mins) and Nevis Range (35 mins)
Winter walking and climbing
Windswept Beach walk followed by swim and a sauna and a meal at the Holly Tree
Indoor Climbing and ice climbing at Kinlochleven, with cafe and soft play.
Beach walk along cycle path for amazing views of Castle Stalker then lunch at the cafe.
Walks to the dramatic Inchree Falls at Onich and a visit to the red squirrel feeding station.

Summer
Kinlochleven Seafood Restaurant
Beach games and a BBQ at Cuil Bay
Summer hillwalking
Take the Harry Potter express to Mallaig
Sea kayaking - guided trips from Rockhopper
Sailing: lessons and boat hire
Cycling trip to Lismore, rent bikes in Appin
Sealife Cruises from Oban, Fort william and Ballachullish
Canyoning and adventure sports at Vertical Descents
Wild swimming in the River Coe, or the Etive or any of the lovely rivers nearby

All Year:
Sea life centre, Balcardine
Joys of Oban: seafood - especially seafood cabin
The Sustrans cycle route off road Oban to Ballachulish (and soon to Fort William)
Day trip to Mull for sea Eagles, and Iona

Specific events:
Watch the downhill mountain biking series at Nevis Range and Glencoe
Watch the famous motocross biking competition. The most dramatic climb and descent takes place at Duror on the second day. Park at Duror Village hall.
Various ski events through the season at Glencoe and Nevis Range
