About this listing

My place is close to great views, restaurants and dining, the beach, family-friendly activities, and art and culture. You’ll love my place because of the location, the people, the ambiance, the outdoors space, and the neighbourhood. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), and big groups.

The space

Casa Cowee was built by a couple from Colorado who ventured down through Central America on a road trip in the early 70s. They were told of an island paradise not touched by tourists so caught a boat over from the mainland and fell in love with Roatan. This was when the beach around the island was the main road for the people and horses, no cars were on the island yet. They promptly bought the one acre lot on West Sandy Bay and had a local architect Bill Brady design an "island home" that would capture the cooling Caribbean breezes. No AC needed in Casa Cowee. Usually one light blanket at night. The heat goes out the top!

They passed away a few years ago and I bought the house from the family in 2013. I have updated everything possible in the house, added on to the small Temple Tree House and in 2015 added the studio apt and the Bamboo Casita on to the main house.

You snorkel the reef out front, walk down the beach to great restaurants, bars and super entertainment. Taxi 10 min. to West End to step it up a 100 paces. Sundowners for lunch and happy hour if you are not going to our beach’s happy hour. Walk to snorkel with the dolphins or back to the Carambola Gardens owned by our architect Bill Brady. Zip Lining is outstanding. Fishing - outstanding. Diving and snorkelling on the second largest reef in the world. Catch the Sunday celebrations doing the Punta to the line up of skin drums in Punta Gorda - unforgettable. Some people don't make it past the deck, though.
You can have our caretaker Jose get the veggie/fruit truck to stop daily for you. We have two kayaks for guests and supply snorkelling gear. Drinking water is supplied.
Neighbours can use the dock moderately, Sundays are busiest so like being by a pool! If you don't like the activity, Sunday is the best day for your island tour. Try the Hole in the Wall for all you can eat steak and lobster and an adventure to remember the Punta Gorda... a must. Go into a shack by the sea for a bowl of the island fish soup Machuca.
Remember this is "island" which means island time. Walk slower, be patient. There is nothing that can be rushed on Roatan.

Guest access

Your rental is the main house consisting of the main hexagon with living, dining, kitchen and loft ( queen bed ). The hall joining the Master bedroom houses the 3 pc bath. The master bedroom has a King bed and walk in closets. There is a flat screen in the master and another in the living area. Rental includes the Bamboo Casita which is a self contained studio unit. We have satellite tv (all sports and US channels) and wireless internet. We provide a local cell phone and you can add more time if you want to do a lot of calling home. You can also rent the smaller Temple Tree house which is a one bedroom with a large bath, full kitchen, living and dining area, with two large decks.

Interaction with guests

Channin and Kim are available at all times. They can control the security system remote. We have cameras on all accesses to the property and to date have not had a problem. Jose, the property caretaker lives in a house at the back of the property. He is young but very dedicated to the property and care of guests.

Other things to note

I already mentioned the use of the dock. Other than Christmas and Easter when the island is absolutely packed and school is out it is pretty quiet except some Sunday afternoons. All islands have not private waterfront. Beaches are where most people walk rather than on the main road. We have horses occasionally and the odd local vehicle like the veggie truck and propane, water, but they can only go a couple of miles an hour so not disturbing.
Remember you are in a neighbourhood not an all inclusive gated development. You will feel like you are on a real island, experiencing the real thing. We have a gated circular drive and fenced property so very private and secure. There is a washing machine for guests staying for more than a week at $5 a load. Lines for drying.
Groceries you pick up on the way in from Airport about 20 min away. You get everything there including liquor beer etc. ice and charcoal for BBQ. They have banned plastic bags so if you have your own bring them. You should buy plastic wrap and foil and if you use toilet paper and paper towels in large amounts you should buy. I recommend low use of those due to the waste restrictions of being on an island.
Power is very expensive so we ask you to shut off lights and fans when you are not using. AC is charged from the meter use (usually 75.00) if you need it but only about 2 people a year use it as you have to close the house up which defeats the purpose.

- Casa Cowee is enjoyed by all ages. We have many families that come back year after year that rent the whole property which sleeps 8 to 9 if you rent The Temple Tree House. It is in a neighbourhood of great families. We therefore ask that your lifestyle meets family values. Case Cowee is a great gathering spot but large loud parties are not allowed along with any illegal activities.
There are a lot of activities with in our lagoon area, 4 tourist restaurant/bars with nightly entertainment, three local restaurants. Two of the island's best dive operations a couple of minutes walk down the beach, we provide snorkelling gear as you have the most fantastic reef right out front. You have two single kayaks to use. The dolphins are only a 5 min walk. There is a great medical clinic 3 min walk with the island's recompression chamber. No car required. Taxi (about $3 a head) to busy, but lots of fun West End for more dining and lots of bars, water taxi from there - another $3 to Very busy West Bay Beach (condo/hotels) great for a couple of hours but you will want to come back to the peace of our quiet little piece of heaven.
You have a full time property caretaker Jose on site 24 hours and the property managers Channin and Kim Bodden are right around the corner and have the island's best land/sea tour business including fishing, snorkelling excursions.
Definitely no smoking inside the houses. Use designated areas for BBQ. Fire is not an option.

Hi, My staff say I am semi- retired so I guess I am not working a 60 hour week any longer. Born and bred in Canada, I learned at a young age how fantastic travelling is from my teacher parents who packed the car and small Shasta Trailer every school holiday with 4 kids across the back seat, setting off on one more adventure.
Once I flew the coop, I had to fund my own fun around the world so ultimately I started my own business in my thirties. I now have a fantastic team running my successful mortgage business. This business has made it possible for me to buy Casa Cowee on the most wonderful Caribbean Island of Roatan. My son is now in his early 30s and he loves our second home.
Casa Cowee is a place I can be as busy or un-busy as I want. Un-busy is so easy there, just reading in my hammock with the steady Caribbean breezes with the best panoramic view of our reef enclosed lagoon. Sunsets are not to be missed!
I still travel a fair bit in the US and I love Europe. Turkey and Italy are my favourites but I have much more to see.
I love cooking and entertaining so I have established a great kitchen at Casa Cowee to meet all needs. Dinner on the deck!
