Experience tells me that even on the worst of days, pouring rain, or thick mist, you won't want to leave this apartment! The views are second to none in this part of the province. Your deck literally overhangs the ocean. Picture morning yoga with a puffin looking on! Or waking up to the sounds of a humpback's exhale! Coffee has never tasted better. Whether your particular season brings whales, icebergs, or birds . . . you have found it - all a short commute from St. John's.

The space
The Loon Apartment

Although there is a tendency to say that this apartment is all about that view - it isn't. This is comfortable, charming, and cozy living space - it just happens to also have the best views ever...or did I already say that! The apartment features a private bedroom with queen bed and full bathroom with shower; a living/dining/kitchen area with a pull-out sofa bed; a stylish, functional half kitchen with microwave oven, induction burner, coffee machine, toaster, kettle, sink, small fridge, etc. The drop-leaf table accommodates 2- 4 persons; and of course, you also have a private deck (with BBQ) with those jaw dropping views of the ocean and the islands in the Reserve.

Guest access
Access to the apartment is by coded lock - simple, easy and convenient. We will send along your door codes prior to check-in. We offer plenty of parking,

Other things to note
Additional notes:
Entry to each unit is discreet, via a coded lock thus allowing flexible check in and check out convenience. There are no obstacles, no real stairs, and no obvious barriers to occupancy. The units, however, are not wheelchair accessible.

There is, at the side of the property, a communal sitting area for those who would like to convene at the end of a day; there is a common BBQ on the property as well.

There is a clothesline and the promise of a sea breeze to dry out your hiking things should you wish to avail of it. Otherwise hooks abound to dry your things inside. We may be able to do a load of laundry for you in the owner’s quarters.

Walk out the door and turn left or right and you are on the East Coast Hiking Trail. A lovely 15-minute stroll and you are at Bauline East’s little harbour where you can launch a kayak, maybe get a run out for a morning of cod-jigging…or just sit on the dock blissfully on vacation.

There is plenty to occupy your time. Daily excursions could include:

Whale watching with any of the operators in Bay Bulls – 20 minutes away.

Kayaking – rent a shell in either in Cape Broyle, Bay Bulls or Witless Bay. Or put your own int he water in many locations quite near the house.

Day trip to Ferryland and the archeological dig there from the 17th century.

Day trip to Mistaken Point – our newest UNESCO treasure and the site of the oldest fossils on the planet. You will want to consider actually pre-booking a tour at Mistaken Point - it is new...and very , very busy.

Continue to Cape Race and tour the lighthouse which first heard to QCD from the Titanic.

Stay home – sit on the deck – whale spot in the waters just below your deck.

Spend the day in the capital city – 35 minutes away – then return home to wrap yourself in a blanket and watch the stars from your deck.

Hike til you drop – up to LaManche, or over to Bay Bulls, or up to the Spout, or down to Cappahayden - trails galore.

Hello from Newfoundland! I look forward to hosting your trip "up the Irish Shore" as this part of Newfoundland is called. I love to hike...have traveled far afield, have a family, and have an umbilical attachment to this place we call "The Rock"!

During your stay
Elaine, the owner, (i.e. me!) lives on the property and is available for information, should you require it.

Jerry, the boat builder, former whale boat operator, and builder of the Whale Watcher House, lives next door with Amanda, his partner, and the friendliest of Black Labs – Maggie. (If you are afraid of dogs - then this one will melt away that fear - gentle, sweet animal!) The latter will welcome you home at the end of every day with hopes of a dog biscuit or some such leftover shining in her eyes. Half the time Jerry is in the middle of building a dory...or repairing a boat...and always ready for a yarn! When the recreational fishery is open - he is delighted to take you out on the water to catch your supper.

The apartment is totally yours...mini kitchen, private deck with unsurpassed views...sleeping accommodation for 2 (or 4). Elaine, the owner, is next door should you need her.
