The space

A gorgeous, modern studio apartment, with private entrance, set in one of the most elegant gardens in the Pioneer Valley. A short walk from downtown, terrific restaurants, delis, hot tub spa, great bakery, Emily Dickinson's house, brewpub, and Amherst Cinema, yet near lovely walking, biking, hiking trails, it has intimate views of the garden from its many windows and patio door. There is a gazebo set in the garden offering a shady viewpoint to appreciate the flower/foliage splendor. (It is a four season garden so it is provides beautiful views even in winter.) The queen bed is extremely comfortable; the studio is elegant but simply furnished with bamboo floors, beautiful artwork, rugs and wall murals. The kitchen has small fridge, microwave, electric kettle, utensils, plates and cups. The bathroom is small but well appointed with tiled tub/shower and more garden view. Plenty of closet space in apartment. Wi-fi is free and works even outside. A large screen is available for casting onto from your tablet, phone, or computer (for example, casting onto screen your Netflix or HBOgo)

Driveway Parking. No pets. No smoking. Accommodates only 1 or 2 people. A futon is available for separate sleeping arrangements.

Guest access

The garden and its lovely gazebo, benches, and walking paths are open to guests. Wi-fi is free and works in apartment and in the garden. A large screen (with chromecast attached) is available for projecting from guests' devices (their Netflix, etc.) A small collection of slippers is available for guests' comfort. Fridge, microwave, electric kettle, coffee-maker, coffees, teas, kitchen implements, and dishes provided.

Interaction with guests

Guests are afforded a private stay. I am usually available for welcoming and for advising on resources in the area.

Other things to note

The garden is especially lovely for strolling three seasons, and even in winter it provides wonderful views. The gazebo is a delightful place to have tea or just view the garden.

I expect guests to be reasonably quiet and have no smoking in apartment or in the garden. I cannot have pets because my granddaughters who often stay there are allergy prone. I ask that shoes not be worn in the apartment; some slippers are available.

Carol's place is ideally located within walking distance to town and Amherst College. The studio apartment is comfortable and spacious. Coffee and tea are stocked in the kitchen area. If we return to Amherst, we will try to book Carol's place.

It's a bit pricey at $150 a night but coffee and a pretty garden is included. Great location.

A wonderfully well curated garden—truly exceeded our expectations. Apartment is more than adequate in both its size and accommodations. Great location—perfect for getting into town on foot or by car, for getting to Amherst College campus by foot and to UMass by car, and for getting onto the backroads out to hiking trails. Carol is quick to respond to queries and comments and her home is annotated with helpful little tips and best practices. We can't wait to return in the fall and see Carol's garden then!

Response from Carol:
Thanks, Dane, for your kind review. I wish I could have been there to welcome you and Lindsay, but am glad to hear you might return in the fall; the garden will be ablaze with color. I look forward to meeting you then. Carol

Carol's Amherst apartment was quiet, clean, very comfortable and an easy 10 minute walk to downtown. All of the accommodations were top-shelf. The icing on the cake was the amazing garden that Carol and her husband designed and nurtured over a 25 year period. It was an absolute paradise that you can easily spend hours in. In addition, Carol was an absolute delight. A very gracious host, she helped us with questions about this beautiful part of the country and gave us a personalized tour of her garden.

Response from Carol:
Thank you, Mark and Dana for your kind review. It was a pleasure to know you. I especially enjoyed our walk around the garden together. Hope the plants do well and I do hope to see you again. We are likely to be visiting my son and family in South Berwick and would love to say hello to you in Portland. Carol

Great place, great person! Amherst is already a treasure, with quiet beauty and sophisticated culture everywhere. But Carol's property is a hidden gem that should not be missed. Her house is a gloriously reimagined Victorian, the rental apartment is elegant and filled with design savvy and personal artistic touches, and the gardens that envelope the property are beyond words. Designed by Carol and her late husband, the layered greenery, brilliant flowers, walkways and bridges and mini-canals are a destination in themselves. My wife and I felt sad to only have one evening to spend in this special world; it is a retreat worthy of a much longer stay. And Carol's warm hospitality was worth the trip in itself. As Michelin says: "Vaut la Visite"...many times over.

Response from Carol:
Tod ( and June), This is the kindest, most gracious review I've ever had. I felt the same way about you and June and hope we do stay in touch. I would be honored to see your place and offer my garden help and I hope you'll come back to stay again soon. Carol PS: Just watched your wonderful TED talk; very inspiring. Plan to look for some views of your operas!

This place is fairly unique, Apt was spotless, communication with Carol was flawless, the private garden was the most gorgeous residential garden I have ever seen by a wide margin, and the location was fantastic either a medium walk or a 1-2 minute drive to the center of town and 5 minute drive to UMASS. My only regret was that I couldn't stay longer.

Response from Carol:
Thanks, John, for such a glowing, kind review. It was a pleasure to host you and Luke. Sorry your Mom couldn't be here with you. Perhaps you could bring her another time. It would be lovely to host you and your family again. Carol
