The space

There are 2 floors; the street level accommodation is our home, with the basement flat located via a separate entrance in the communal stairwell of 27 Hillside Crescent. On arrival, please ring our doorbell at number 28 and we will show you how to access the basement flat and show you round.

Guest access

The main entrance to the basement flat is via the main door at number 27 Hillside Crescent. In the stairwell go down the steps; and the doorway to our flat is on your right at the foot of these steps. There is currently a single deadlock on the door.
In the stairwell you will see an exterior door opposite the front door of the flat, this leads to the communal garden. You are welcome to use the garden the green key provides access to the garden which you can use.
We would politely ask that you keep in mind our neighbours when in the stairwell, in particular when returning in the evening/ early morning. The basement flat benefits from the bed not being situated next to the stairwell, however the bedrooms on most houses are, and noise travels very well in these echoing old buildings.

Getting around

Edinburgh is a hilly city. So while most of the main attractions in Edinburgh are within comfortable walking distance, there may be times when weather and fatigue make public transport an attractive proposition – besides, you are on holiday.

The local bus service is Lothian Buses it operates over 70 bus routes. The Dayticket offer can be good value giving unlimited travel on bus and tram in the city for one day. You can also download the to plan journeys, find out when buses are due and purchase m-tickets. Be aware that an exact fare system is used and drivers will not provide change, so have correct money ready when boarding. A single ticket is currently £1.60 for an adult, 80p for a child. A dayticket is £4, £2 for a child.

There is a bus stop 2 minutes from the flat on the opposite side of London Road. There are several buses stop here and would suggest you use this stop if you are going to Princes Street or North Bridge.

If you are intending to go to Hollyrood House, The Scottish Parliament or the lower end of The Royal Mile, then the number 35 from Easter Road is probably the best option. To get to Easter Road, turn left when leaving the flat and walk down Hillside Crescent and then around 3 minutes walk along London Road, going over over Brunton Terrace. The next on your left at the traffic lights beside London Road Parish Church is Easter Road. Cross the road and walk down to the bus stop so that you will be travelling up
Easter Road back over London Road.

We would recommend visiting the bars and restaurants at The Shore in Leith, however there is no direct bus from London Road If you go to Leith Walk and cross over to bus stop taking you down Leith Walk, you can get either the 16 or the 22 to The Shore.

The tram service is very useful for getting to and from the airport. It will also be handy if travelling to Murrayfield or to Haymarket Train Station. At a push, you could use it to get to the West End of Princes Street, but you would have already walked a quarter of the way getting to the tram stop and would probably be better getting a bus.
As it is currently just a single line from the centre of Edinburgh to the Airport it is of limited use in getting about in Edinburgh

Staying with Hazel and Barry was by far THE EST airbnb experience we've had across our multiple travels around the world. The place was so homey and clean, and they thought of the little things that made all the difference. They knew we have a small child, and they welcomed him too with some of their toys and books, and made sure he was safe by adding outlet covers and taking away potentially dangerous flower vases (though they still had beautiful fresh flowers in the bathroom). They even were so kind to help us borrow a travel cot when we accidentally left ours at home! The kitchen was fully stocked with all necessary equipment, but also had the basic little things you don't want to have to buy on a short trip -- pasta, rice, butter, oil, tea, coffee etc -- but also fresh bread, a variety of fruit, a bottle of wine, and good ol' Scottish Irn-Bru. In all, the flat is lovely and the hosts fantastic. And if you get a chance, take a walk in the back garden -- it's so beautiful!

We spent a wonderful weekend in this spit-spot clean and fresh flat. Everything we could possibly want was at our fingertips. Hazel and Barry provide a warm and friendly welcome and lovely little extras like treats in the kitchen and fresh flowers in the loo. Very thoughtful. The flat is bright, cheerful, comfortable and private. Everything is new. The place is easy to find and has a convenient location – walking distance to the Royal Mile and Arthur's Seat. Better than a hotel. We'll definitely return and would recommend this to anyone.

Our experience staying with Barry and Hazel was brilliant. Communication played a major role as me and my boyfriend missed our train and couldn't arrive the night we had planned. When we contacted Hazel and let her know of the delay she was concerned about us, making sure everything we needed was in place for next morning. They were also very flexible with the check in and check out times, which we really appreciated. The flat was very clean and pretty, just as in the pictures. They also left us plenty of fruit and toast. Great hosts!

these hosts had thought of everything. from the books on the shelf to the juicer in the cupboard and the shortbread biscuits. it felt like a personalised apartment to make you feel at home away from home. lovely family. lovely apartment. lovely experience.

First of all I have to say a big thanks to Barry. We arrived very late in the night and our flight was even then a bit later then scheduled but Barry really welcomed us warmly. The apartment was very clean and new furnished and renovated. Fresh flowers and a huge offer of food (bread, cheese, fruit) and drinks were in the kitchen. It was everything there to feel like at home (noodle, rice, salt/pepper) to cook with. First ever seen at Airbnb. The only negative thing is that the apartment is in the basement and the Windows can't be open. There is only a tiny hole in the glass at the top. So everybody must know if he can handle that or not. We opened the door from the apartment and the door from the opposite to the garden to let fresh air come in. But it should be a note in the description of the apartment. Besides that we liked the apartment and Barry :)

First of all, our host were warm and welcoming!! They had fresh cut flowers and a bowl of fruit when we checked in. This place was very quaint and quiet (just what we were looking for). The flat is located in a beautiful part of town, close to everything. We felt very safe in the neighborhood and was very clean and close to bus lines. Hazel gave us her contact if we ever needed her assistance!! I would give our experience and A++..... I am a retired flight attendant and have traveled quite a bit and would recommend this Hillside Basement Flat to all my friends!!! Thank you for your hospitality Barry and Hazel....
