About this listing
This beautifully renovated 1925 schoolhouse has breathtaking views of the peaks of Beech mountain and White Top, Virginia's second highest mountain. Near the Virginia Creeper Trail, The AT, zip lining and more, this is a true mountain retreat.
Our family ties go back over 100 years, and in 1925 donated the land to the county upon which the first school in Green Cove was built. Purchased back from the county in the 1950's and passed down, it has been our family retreat since 1985, when it was originally renovated by Bernard and Bonnie Hurley, and now their daughter Darlene and her husband David will be your hosts.
The great room features a large stone fireplace, a full kitchen, and a lovely bay window that perfectly frames the peak of White Top Mountain. It affords six comfortably in the three bedrooms, one queen, one King, and one with two twin beds, cots are available for two additional guests, which can be set up in a semi-private front room separated from the living room by French doors. Beautiful gardens and cool summer breezes on your choice of two porches give you plenty or room to spread out. The croquet court is always a fun way to bring out a little competition. Then cozy nights together by the soapstone wood stove are sure to make you never want to leave.
And since winter is a wonderful time to be here as well we will be adding a standby generator in 2017 to ensure your visit goes smoothy in the event of power outage during your stay.

Interaction with guests
A few days before your arrival we will provide you with a code to the lock box located on a post on the side porch. We will be staying in a separate, private living space in the home during your stay. All the entrances to the rental area are private, and while there are doors that connect the two spaces, each have locks on both sides, and all the bedrooms have locks for your security and theirs. That being said, we are just a knock on the door or ring on the doorbell away from helping in any way they can. In the event we need to go out you can reach us through the Airbnb website, we will also provide phone numbers providing we are in an area with cell service.

-We ask the courtesy of not leaving dirty dishes in the sink. There is a dishwasher, we are happy to unload clean dishes out of it.

Our family has been a part of the community in Green Cove, Virginia for well over 100 years. Darlene and David Crank will be your hosts during your stay, your initial contact through Airbnb will be with either Darlene or their daughter Gwynne Virts.
Darlene and David are taking over the Schoolhouse from her parents, if you have stayed with us before you know Bernard and Bonnie. You might still see them here as well, they are just taking more time to enjoy their retirement.
Bernard worked for The Washington Post as a typesetter and Bonnie is an artist, who together raised five children in the home Bernard built in Northern Va. When they retired in the mid 1980's, they turned their eyes to restoring what was one of the first schools in Green Cove, Va. With hard work and lots of help from our tight knit family, they turned a four room school house into a home filled with wonderful craftsmanship and art made by Bonnie and many others that make up the diverse artist community in the surrounding areas. Every room has paintings, stained glass, weavings, blown glass, photographs, and pottery. In the mid 1990's they decided to open their home and have been hosting guests ever since.
David and Darlene purchased the "schoolhouse" as we always called it from her parents in 2014 and have been assisting with the rentals part time until 2017. We are now thrilled to be here full time and love riding the Creeper Trail, hiking and most recently zip lining and looking to find all the other fun and interesting things the area offers.
We are also thrilled that our family is also migrating to the area and will be assisting with their vacation rentals as well and will be able to help with arrangements for larger groups as well.
We love to share what we know about the area and are happy to assist with any questions you have but also don't want to intrude on your vacation so please feel free to reach out to us with any questions or problems.
We are pet friendly and have our own pets on the premises.
