Positive vibes in an active, diverse, artsy neighborhood with restaurants (vegan+), coffee shop with wi-fi, bar and grocery within walking distance (this is not common in Detroit). Simple, ecofriendly with 2 guest bedrooms. 3 night min stay & 15% weekly discount & 40% monthly discount.

The space

Detroit is much like a Berlin; full of creativity, interesting history and the paradox of good and bad sections. This location is in an active, artisitc neighborhood right by the beautiful Belle Isle & approx 2 miles from Downtown. The house is simply decorated with a wonderful porch (they call it the stoop here) to relax on. It is not fancy but clean, natural and beautiful.
DVD player with flat screen is available. Much space in the house and front porch. Access to the backyard for dining and relaxing as is our livingroom. We are in a historic neighborhood close to connective motorways, downtown, the riverwalk and the coolest neighborhood around!
Discount for stays of one month or more-please ask for special offers.
Profits after overhead will go back into the community through alternative school programs, restoration and community greening efforts.
Motto: "Live fully, tread lightly! Less is more."
Buses: one reliable one down Lafayette to Downtown and another reliable one up Woodward. Otherwise Detroit is transport poor as it was the 'Motorcity' and though efforts are working to change this, it takes time. There are bike lanes and flat roads around our house.
Bike: A bike may be available to loan for a small fee as long as you lock it up when parking and take good care.

We are a HOME, not a hotel or a hostal, so PLEASE:
*COMMUNICATE what you need or desire! Smile! We welcome input!
*Please read 'The Space' & take note of our mottos as we strive to be respectful, treat others equally and are pretty simplistic and easy-going. We would appreciate the same in return. Our relaxed & interactive personalities does not mean we have more time than you; it means we have made a conscious choice to approach life from the perspective of abundance.
A few things we ask to be honored to keep the space tidy:
*Autumn & Winter-Shoes off at front door--communal slippers for use or bring your own.
*please use what you need; just clean it afterwards
*NO EATING IN ROOMS PLEASE! we do not want a rodent problem!
*additional days may be possible if room is still available but they will need to be paid in cash in advance
**wi-fi is available at the house and the local coffee shop on corner (open 6 a.m.-6 p.m.);
*Welcome to use all that is in the common areas as well as the kitchen, stereo, books, etc.
*Full kitchen privileges with small space in Fridge/Freezer, shelf space & space in bigger fridge for longer stays
*PLEASE keep drain protector in the drain in the shower and clean your own hair out after each use! We have old pipes (house is historic) and hair will cause drains to clog. Cleaning is essential as no one wants to clean up another's hair or step in grime!
*hold toilet handle down till it flushes as it is a bit tricky
*Only indoor shoes in bathroom please
*HAVE FUN AND SMILE!

Sofia is lovely and will make your stay as welcoming as possible, from introducing you to great places to go out locally, or getting involved in community get togethers, she even lent me her sat-nav so I didn't get lost on the I-94 again! I'd highly recommend staying with Sofia - especially if you like staying at real places , being where the locals are at and you like historic Detroit houses! I intend to be back in Detroit as soon as possible, and while Sofia's place is 38 miles from where I am visiting, Sofia's will be where I stay.

I stayed for 4 nights and it felt just like home. I came in late and left early which was no problem at all. Sofia is a very nice guest and made me feel welcome. The bed was the best part. It was very comfortable which is the number one thing I always look for when travelling! Sofia's home and neighbourhood has a lot of character and was an awesome experience compared to a boring hotel. Thanks again!

For me the location was great because most of our plans were on the east side and downtown. No problem with the neighborhood or parking. The room was great and the bed was comfy. Shower was good. Sofia was nice as was the other houseguest we met. Shadow is beautiful and friendly dog. If we weren't so busy, we would have loved hanging out with Sofia some more.

I loved staying at Sofia's place in West Village. We chose her because, in addition to her house being gorgeous, she makes it clear that "profits after overhead will go back into the community. That was really important to us! Her house is just as described, a gorgeous historic house in a quiet neighborhood. We were there in the summer so we got to use the stoop a lot, which was a dream! The bed and the room were so comfortable that me and my friend got the best night's sleep we have had in a while. Sofia was super professional in communicating to sort out our arrival and in solving a small issue we had right before arriving. She was also very very accommodating since I was arriving pretty late at night. Thank you so much!!! Sofia and her son Nils were amazing hosts, always helping us figure out the best activities during our trip and recommending places. We really enjoyed getting to know them! Sofia recommended an awesome community yoga place close by and Nils lent us bikes and came with us to a really nice secluded beach in Belle Isle, which was my favorite part of the trip. I was a bit worried that we would be far away from downtown, but we found it really easy to move around even without a car. There is a Mogo bike station close by, and a variety of buses that leave you blocks away from the house. It was also a quick Lyft ride away from downtown.

Nells was very welcoming-he showed me around the house. He was just a super host. The bed was comfy and my room was clean. The house is pretty tattered around the edges-if you're looking for pristine modern accommodations this isn't for you. But if you need a comfy place to sleep with warm, friendly host, Sofia and Nells will do you well. Relaxing on the back porch with the dog at my feet was a great additional perk.

Response from Sofia:
Glad you enjoyed your stay. Yes, our historic homes are all works in progress. 108 years old and she needs some constant TLC. Only able to give her that in stages as money allows. That's why we look for those who are after atmosphere rather than modern sterility ;-) Glad you enjoyed the dog and your stay.

Life is all about attitude and how we choose to journey through it. I have found Travel has helped me become more empathic, less judgemental and has given me a view on the world which would have been impossible without it. I love sharing my home with fellow travelers who might a…
