This cottage was a great stay for us. It was plenty of space for my wife and I, plus our 14 month old son. It's 1960s charm was a. Ice change of pace. The location cannot be beat as it's 10 mins from Santa Barbara. Summers communication were great and she even stocked some small supplies in the kitchen for us. A few things travelers should know: yes you can hear the 101 and train, but it didn't bother us at all. The house was easily cooled by opening windows and closing curtains. It is a throwback to the 60s, with few frills. This made for a charming stay and overall a great experience.

What a wonderful retreat this was. Summer was very easy to communicate with and even asked if we needed anything in the fridge when we arrived (she had juice for us on arrival). RE: TRAFFIC NOISE- My wife and I are both from large cities so the freeway sounds barely registered with us. RE: TRAIN NOISE- A few train whistles during the day and maybe once at night. I'm a light sleeper and it woke me up one of the three nights we were there. My wife is a moderate to heavy sleeper and didn't wake up once. RE: "OUT-DATED DÉCOR"-The pictures are a pretty accurate representation of the house so...if you don't like the pictures...don't book the house. In short this is a very comfortable home (not a hotel) with a pretty outdoor area. Perfect is you want a low-key place to relax.

This is a great base for enjoying Santa Barbara, and Summerland itself is a nice little area. It's super easy to get around, being so close to the 101 and although you can hear the traffic (and the train), we soon got used to it and it didn't bother us. The house was very hot when we arrived but cooled quickly with doors open. The garden is a delight to sit in and watch the humming birds. Great to have your own driveway, lots of towels and a very comfy sofa. The bathroom and kitchen would benefit from some updating and the washing machine was out of order when we arrived, which was an inconvenience but Summer made us very welcome and communication with her was very efficient. Thank you Summer for your hospitality.

Unfortunately our expectations of this house were not met. Although clean throughout, we thought it looked and felt tired and in need of refurbishment. The noise from the freeway and train track cannot be underestimated. We found it difficult to ignore. If you don't mind older and more rustic accommodation, and are used to the noise of traffic, then this may be the right accommodation for you. It wasn't for us. Sorry!

Response from Summer:
"Hi Gordon. I am sorry you feel that you have had a disappointing experience. My accommodation is maintained to the highest standard and offers an experience of a valued and popular part of America and of this particular coastal community. Your stay was a very short one. Perhaps, had it been longer, you would have had more of an opportunity to absorb the area's uniquely American charms. The location is very dear to me and I have learned to treasure it more and more over the years."

Summerland house is located on a hill overlooking the ocean. The views from the living picture window are lovely. Morning coffee sitting on the comfortable couch with the view of vast Pacific Ocean is the perfect way to start your day! The neighborhood is quaint and there a few stores and restaurants in walking distance. The good and bad thing about the location is the proximity to the freeway. Great for when you are traveling between the nearby cities like Santa Barbara and Ventura but bad because of the noise. We found closing the windows in the evening help though. Summer is an excellent host, offering to have a few staples in the fridge for us so we would be set for the next morning and made suggestions for things to do in the area. Her home is fully equip with all the things you need including a lovely backyard with a fireplace and plenty of hummingbirds to memorize you while you unwind in the CA sunshine.

I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and have lived here in Summerland for over 30 years now. I love this area, the beach, the weather, all the great hikes, and being so close to the city of Santa Barbara, yet living in a small friendly community at the same time.
