An ancient hunting lodge privately located in a magical setting in 300 acres of forest - with no public access - this camp is like 'stepping back in time' and has featured in the national press. Mrs Higg's lodge is an experience of glamping like no other.

The space
The lodge was built in 1835 as a hunting lodge and is situated privately on its own in the middle of 350 acre woodland on the family estate about a mile up a track. The lodge had not been used for probably 60 years but is now renovated to keep its charm and to make it comfortable for guests with proper beds and a sink with hot running water provided from its own well. It is completely off grid, with solar power for some light and to power the fridge. The lodge has three woodburners - one in each of the bedrooms and one in the sitting room. Wood is provided for you. The comfortable proper beds will be made up ready for your arrival and bath towels are also provided. The bathroom is adjoining the lodge, but accessed from outside. It is very comfortable with a hot walk-in shower, wash basin and flushing loo. This is not quite a typical camping experience, more like experiencing a turn back in time.
There is a small stove inside for cooking, and also a large firepit and outside sitting area.
The wood fired hot tub is nestled on the edge of the woodland and this will be cleaned and filled with spring water for your arrival. If you want to use the hot tub there is a small extra charge of £20 and this can be paid on arrival or departure if you are not sure. All is for private use of guests only.

The lodge is ideal for couples, solo adventurers, and families.
Well behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement.
The closest bus and train service is Hereford, 9 miles away, your own transport is recommended.

Where you’ll be

Byford, Herefordshire, United Kingdom

Nearby Hereford has a wonderful cathedral and the famous Mappa Mundi is housed next door. The city also has all the usual shops and chain restaurants, historic walks and hidden gems.
Hay-on-Wye is just up the road in 15 minutes and is a glorious border town, with plenty of history and has the literary festival there every year.
The sites are close to the historic 'black and white trail' of Herefordshire, leading to the Brecon Beacons.

I am a mother of three - Jessica, Jack and Ben and married to a farmer in Herefordshire. I have a small holiday business there which I really enjoy and even though I love coming to London for short times as it keeps my sanity, we hardly visit our beautiful London house. I have loved creating a 'home from home' family house in London which others can now enjoy. I enjoy exploring new places and staying in unique properties. I am not one for sitting down too long and I have horses and dogs and when my children permit I can spend hours with them.
I believe that when you are travelling and spending money you want to feel special and valued, and I deeply dislike staying in modern, massive hotels - however smart!! If I was travelling to London with my family, I would much prefer to take a house like mine - this is why I have done it. Tell me what you think!

During your stay

The four sites are set on our 350 year old family estate on the borders of England and Wales along the Wye Valley which is in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Each one is completely individual and private and lends themselves for a complete romantic retreat.

Having re-designed and updated some of the gorgeous cottages on the estate for holiday rentals I turned my thoughts to creating an exclusive selection of fabulous individual luxury glamping sites all set in private locations within the ancient woods, among the apple orchards and along the River Wye.

It has been enormous fun planning the locations, sourcing items and creating each site. I can't wait for your adventure to begin at whichever camp you choose. You can expect peace and quiet with fantastic views, wild life surrounding you and options for fun outdoor cooking followed by marsh mallow roasting, pizza making in your own pizza oven at some sites and hot tub relaxation at others. The walking opportunities are endless, or take a canoe down the River Wye.

We welcome back visitors year after year, who all treasure the sense of peace and enjoyment they take away from their own glamping experiences here.
